Is anyone else uncomfortable with swapping procedure?

Is anyone else uncomfortable with always needing $500+ available in order to have your Nexus One swapped? I have dust under the screen on my 2nd Nexus One, but I'm not sure if I want to go through the hassle of swapping for a refub and having nearly $600 tied up for a week.

Just wondering if I'm alone...

it's understandeable. if they didn't do it that way, you'd have to send your phone in first, and then be without a phone while they shipped one back out to you... it's because they are operating independently of the carrier. when you ship a phone to vzw, the reason why you arent asked to put a deposit down is because they already have your information. if you don't send anything back or the phone is sent back and found to be broken and it's your fault, vzw can just put it on your acct.

Not sure how insurance works in the US, but most insurance policies over here where the phone is carrier supplied, they do door step swaps sometimes same day.

I know this is true for Orange, as have used it previously. Not sure about T-mobile UK.
Over here, you ship your phone off to HTC in Milton Keynes, they reckon it's about a 5 day turn around time.

I sent mine there yesterday for a minor cosmetic issue that had been bugging me (the bottom bit of plastic was offset by about 0.5mm, just enough to occasionally catch on the pouch when pulling the phone out), so I'll let you know how I get on.

On the plus side, my spare phone is another HTC... a comedy SPV500 (Typhoon) running Winmo 6.5

They do that at Verizon was well. The difference is that the current Nexus One can only be had via Google so it makes it impossible for T-Mobile to do a same day swap. I hope Verizon will carry these phones in stores.

I'm doing the swap right now. I've got the new one and my old one. I love being able to have my old phone for 10 days to make sure I've got everything set up right before I send it back. It won't take 10 days of course but a couple anyways.

Also, I put a Clarivue anti-glare screen protector on the new phone. While being a decent protector it does dull the display. I'm able to hold my new phone and old one side by side, set the brightness equal on both with the same wallpaper and visibly see exactly how much the screen protector dulls the display. I can also test for glare in daylight etc...I'll take some pics if I get a chance. Anyways, the swap procedure is good for things like that.

Heres what I decided to do (considering I've been through the swap process once already) and because I didn't want to receive another refurb unit... I posted my current Nexus One on craigslist for $550 (already sold) and ordered a new one. Now, opposed to having another refub, I receive a brand new unit and hopefully some of the manufacturing defects will have been addressed.

Not a bad idea. Is the dust under the screen very noticeable? Do you already have cash in hand or does the buyer still need to see it? Craigslist is more of a local thing afaik so I don't understand why someone would pay full price for a used phone. Are you shipping it over-seas if you don't mind me asking.

Dust under the screen wasn't super bad, but it was over the top for a phone that is less than a month old. My original iphone NEVER had dust under the screen or any other manufacturing defects. The cash is currently sitting in the bank :) and i'm just using an old Nokia until my new phone shows up tomorrow. The guy drove in from Dayton (60 miles from me) to pick the phone up and paid for it in cash. I'm not sure why people pay the near retail cost.. but he did save like $10 on taxes. Maybe he didnt have a credit card/debit card? Who knows... but i'm not complaining :)

They don't charge you anything. This is only to protect them from theft. If they would wise up and have a brick and mortar store, these issues would go away. But in the meantime, as long as you send the other phone in within 10 days, you're charged nothing.

I just want to make clear that I understand the logic behind their decision to require a pre-authorization for the $529. While there is not a technical charge, it does tie up $529 on your account (if this is a debit card, this is real money on hold). I think this could be alleviated if they were allow subscribers of T-Mobile to have the phone shipped to a local T-Mobile store and have the phone swapped there.

It doesn't seem to be the most customer centric process considering the phone is being swapped out for manufacturing defects. I was simply saying that they need to consider alternatives.

That's actually a good idea...sending it to Tmobile.

I also forgot to mention the biggest reason I chose to go the sell and purchase a brand new second replacement... When I called HTC for my first swap, I was on the phone for 60+ minutes. They submitted the pre-auth, it hit my account, but the rep said that it was denied and marked fraud. Which I found confusing, because a) the authorization would not have hit my account had it been been denied and b) they wanted to send it through a second time. Needless to say... It turned me a bit sour on the process.

However, I would like to say that beyond the process issues I've had, I love my nexus one. It's a great phone and really has immense potential. I received my new phone today and getting my phone back up and running was impeccably simple!

that seems really strange. if something like that had happened to me, i would not be doing repeat business with the company(i.e., buying ANOTHER nexus one), i would be selling my htc products and going to a droid or an iphone.

Well I can say that I am a former iPhone user. I really enjoyed the iphone, but a) ATT signal was terrible in Columbus, OH and b) it can't multitask. The multi-tasking was a handicap that was too much. I use pandora a lot and got tired of having to shut down pandora just to respond to a text. The droid is an interesting option (or a nexus on verizon), however their plans are CRAZY expensive. There are trade-offs and I think I am pretty happy with my current setup.
