Hey everyone. I have a pretty old laptop that I was considering to give Linux a try. Any suggestions on a version for a Linux noob and also a place to learn about it on the web?

Also, looking to build a nas and thought maybe unraid. Same sort of questions. What do you think and any good resources?

Ubuntu.

ok if you cant moput it... it happens so just turn on the phone... and then put the su.zip on the sd card there and then reboot back into CMR and flash the SU.zip there

edit: you may have to push cmr on your phone again before flashing the su.zip if you are doing it the manual way

Yep, it's generally agreed upon as the easiest to use version. I tried booting it up on an old HP netbook (10.1 I think) but it broke wifi.
As long as you have a sizable USB flash drive, you can boot it off of there to try it out without completely nixing Windows.

it didnt break wifi you just need to have a wired connection to download the drivers needed to run the wifi it happend to me when i first installed it on my 10.1 net book

I'll be honest, I read up as much as I could and plugged in my router and tried to get the drivers to work, but it just never worked out. Actually got some help from the Computers subforum here too.
Guess I was just a little lazy (and quite a computer noob) from the beginning

Haha, just found the thread. Maybe if I have another free afternoon, I'll give it another shot:

Or a DVD. I booted off of a DVD and played around with it for a while. The install can be finicky at times...took me a couple of days of attempting different things with the partitions to get it to boot alongside Windows 7 properly. Now I've got a dual boot setup that runs perfectly in either setting....except the sound in Ubuntu...I'm running HDMI to my 32" TV and line-out audio. I got sound working in Windows but Ubuntu isn't recognizing the correct audio driver and not allowing me to manually control the output of the sound to the port I need. Oh well. I'll mess with it some more over the coming weeks and get it working I'm sure, I just like tinkering with it.

Good Morning All! I have waited to unlock and root until now as I wanted to give myself a month on ics completely out of the box. However, lately, I have been experiencing one way audio issues on phone calls. Basically, at some point during a phone call, the other person starts saying you are breaking up and then can't here you. Meantime, I can hear them great, no static and full bars. Essentially, the microphone stops working. After a search on the net, I found others are also having this issue. I love my gnex and know this can somehow be fixed. It is annoying that I have to end the call and re-initiate it just to finish a call. So, last night I used Wugs root toolkit. All went great, no issues whatsoever. Very easy and has the same ease on un-rooting and returning to stock if needed. My question today is does anyone have any ideas for a fix for the Microphone issue and any suggestions on radios that will work better on the edge of 4g?
Now that I rooted, I am afraid the compulsion to modify things is here, lol.

Male to male 3.5mm cord. You can get em super cheap at Radio Shack.

http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Unlimi...6IV8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326378301&sr=8-1

I bought mine on amazon for about 2 bucks. Works great, drove to Texas over the holidays and streamed either pandora, xm or tune-in radio the whole way. I did also run navigation at the same time and found that even with it plugged into power the whole way, i eventually drained the extended battery at about 11-12 hours. 4g was in and out along I20, mostly rural area, so I think the radio worked overtime. I did loose connection multiple times on all of the streaming apps, but logged back in with minimal effort. The xm sirius app was the most buggy.

Isn't this where people were saying to change the name of something so that CWR will stick?

Have you read through this thread? I was having the exact same problem early on. I replaced the phone and when that didn't work, I had my Nexus boxed up and ready to exchange for a Rezound.

Instead, based on that thread, I tried swapping out my SIM card and it seems to have fixed my problems -- enough that I plan to keep the Nexus past the Friday return deadline. Per the thread, the SIM swap is hit or miss for others so I have no way of knowing what the end all solution is, but I figure that should it recur in the future, that has got to be something that falls under the 1-year warranty.

I do NOT think custom ROMs will address this issue.
