soo... I am about the least tech savvy person on the planet, and my HTC EVO sustained alcohol damage (it's kinda like water damage, but with tequilla instead) and so I purchased a replacement HTC EVO 4G on ebay. The price was good and it was the last 3 minutes left. I skimmed the listing to find that it works great no problems, clean ESN etc. However, I missed that it said "phone is rooted and is currently running the latest MIUI rom." I looked it up and it sounded like a good thing. I figured alright this is cool I can roll with this...
So I received the phone today, contacted sprint to Activate and the pretty much told me that they are not able to activate the phone. So first she starts trying to help me program it and said if she couldn't get it programed then she could help me get it flashed back to the original settings.....
Comes back on the phone after putting me on hold and speaking to a supervisor and tells me there is nothing they can do, and I should take it back to the person on ebay I bought it from.
From reading bits and pieces it looks like it IS possible to activate this phone with this MIUI rom. However at this point I really don't care. I just want the phone to work....
I just need to know... in the simplest terms possible because ya start talking all techy... my brain is going to hear Charlie Brown's teacher ... how to make this phone possible to activate. If that means going back to the original HTC format... I'm good with that.

HELP!!??

And thank you in advance.

Unfortunately you need a Sense ROM to activate with. Most people here would recommend MikG.

You first need to make sure you clean everything and find out which recovery you have. I and just about everyone else here would recommend Amon RA.

Start Out by reading the Rooting For Dummies Section (Link in my Sig) you can skip the rooting part and go straight to after root. There is a Flash section in there that tells you how to do it. I know you want a phone up and running ASAP however it is going to take a bit for you to read all the info you need. The actuall flashing and all will only take a few minutes. And ASK QUESTIONS we will not bite your head off and say didnt you search blah blah blah
Welcome to the forums and sweat not we will get you were you need to be.

You will have to flash your phone to a Sense based ROM in order to activate your phone with sprint. You can follow this guide: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/441044-flash-guide-us-all-d.html for instructions on flashing.

I would recommend flashing to MikG 3.0: [ROM] - [MikRoms] - [12/17/2011] - MikG v3.0 - Re-Engineered GB Sense 2.1 + 3.0 - xda-developers

Once you have this flashed give Sprint a call and they should be able to help you now. DO NOT tell them your phone is rooted or has been flashed or they will not help you.

Good Luck!

Ok... I'll be honest. Lets just go back to the way the HTC EVO 4G comes when you purchase it from sprint. The MIUI looks cool but I really loved my EVO and so I purchased another one. This is different, and I'm sure if I were smarted I'd like it a lot more. LOL but I just liked my phone. Maybe some day when I have the time to learn more about this I can use it but it's prob better to go with what I know for now.

So how do I get back to that place. Let me know what info you need about/from the phone.

I really appreciate this help!

hmmmm problem.... I have already told them the phone was rooted. Since I am not tech-smart, I did not know that I shouldn't tell them. They now have the DEC from the phone and have probably noted it in my account. Even if I take the MIUI off will they still know that it's the same phone and not activate? also, Once it goes back to the original state will I just be able to activate online that way skipping having to deal with the customer service.

Oye geeze I have made a mess for myself!

You shouldn't have a problem activating it once you are unrooted, regardless if you told them... they just may refuse to fix/repair/help if anything is wrong with the phone. (and even then you can sometimes find friendly Sprint stores where most of the people there have rooted their own phones anyway ;) ).

But since you want to unroot:
Go to the ROOTING For Dummies Guide, and scroll down to the After Rooting --> Unrooting section. Those instructions should be pretty easy to follow, but ask us here if you have further questions.

*sigh* I now am not sure what to do. This MIUI really doe run much smoother and faster. I could almost like it even more than my original HTC EVO.

Mostly I'm afraid that since I don't know how to do all this I will just screw the phone up. I will sleep on this and get back to you all tomorrow on what I decide to do. Sorry I am so finicky, just wanna do whatever will work best.

Some questions to help me understand the terminology a bit better...
What is rooting, or root?
What is Flashing?
If I choose to stay with the MIUI rom, what if any functions/features will I loose?

Thank you for the information.

Based on what you provided, if you want to unroot all you have to do is follow the directions below from the Rooting for dummies gingerbread guide:

Download RUU_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.54.651.1_Radio_2.15 .00.0808_NV_2.15_release_220182_signed.exe to get you the latest ota stock rom and stock recovery. just connect the phone via usb and run the exe file on your computer.
After downloading the file you simply connect your phone to your computer and let the program run. (make sure usb debugging is on)

I linked the RUU method because it is easier for people who arent as tech savvy

Following that:
to get s-on
6.download this file:PC36IMG6.17.zip
7.rename the file by deleting the numbers so that it is only PC36IMG and do not add any zip to the name as windows hides extensions.
8.transfer the zip file to the root of the sd card (this means not in any subfolders).
9.power off (make sure that fastboot is turned off) then press and hold power+vol down.
10.hboot should scan for it. select yes to update.
11.reboot your phone

Thats it!

When I try to download the exe file it downloads something called iLivid instead. After downloading I tried run from the start menu and pasted in the exe file and it says it's not found.

Did I do something wrong?

yeah these free download sites makes it hard to find the file to download. scroll down until you see either megaupload or multi upload. click on the direct download or download file. this should get you so that the file will download.

also just to make sure did you want an answer as far as what it means to be rooted?

Thanks, I will look further down.

Yeah, that would be good. haha I like the MIUI, it does run very smoothly and I'm kind of confused about what I need to do to keep it and activate the phone. Seems easier for me to just go back to the original state. But maybe if I understood more it would not seem so overwhelming.

I apologize, I'm in the middle of studying for my medical boards and my brain is not techy at all. :( I don't know what rooted, or ROM, or flashed... etc all means.

here is a great link that has a lot of terms broken down for you:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/129648-quick-intro-rooting-those-new-rooting.html

but for me rooting is a way to have more freedom to do what ever you want with your phone without having to abide what htc and sprint says you need on your phone. you can get way better battery life and performance will be greatly improved.

also there are so many awesome roms out. the are way better then stock. some are themed and some are stock looking. but also roms now are coming out with sense 2.1, sense 3.0 and sense 3.5 which you will never see officially on the evo.

plus we are now getting ICS (ice cream sandwich) which is the new android os coming out. but it will never come officially to the evo. but the devs are hard at work getting ICS on the phone. so far it is in alpha but they are so closing in to getting it very stable.

but like rxpert says it is not for everyone. so the choice will be up to you.
AHHA!! Found it :D
nice g;ad you found it. they are tricky websites some times.

I do like the idea of longer battery life. Loved my EVO but biggest (and probably only complaint) was the battery life was just plain nonsense. The thing would be dead 4-6 hours into the day.
I also like the fact that it runs much smoother than my old EVO, and faster it seems too.
I am not sure I understand how to flash it though so that it can be activated on sprint and I'm worried if I am having this much probs trying to figure out just how to do that I will have a hard time navigating once I'm using it.

ok so if you want to stay rooted and need to get the phone activated you can just flash a rom. i would start with mik3.0. it is to me the best rom that everyone should start out with. it is what htc should have done to the evo. so go here:MikG v3.0 [12/17/2011] scroll down to the v3.00 and download that file.

then go here and read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. go to the after rooting section and read about how to flash roms and argedion's guide as well. it will show you how to setup your phone and how to flash a rom.

running the exe file that rxpert suggested to download and I get:
ERROR [171]: USB Connection Error
The ROM Update Utility cannot connect to your Android phone. Please check that the USB cable is connected properly between the PC and your Android phone.
Check the following"
1. The Android phone is connected to the USB cable.
2. The USB cable is connected to the PC.
Click 'Exit to quit.

The USB cable is connected to both the PC and the phone. and the phone says htc on it. I tried a second USB cable...

What is the problem?

This is why rooting is probably not for me.

You need to make sure that the phone is on charge only

forgive me, but how do I do that on this MIUI. lol my old EVO just gave me the option when I plugged in the USB. This phone doesn't do that and I can't seem to locate how to change that.

I'm pretty sure MIUI saves the setting automatically, so it's saved as mounted if not in the notification. I'm not on MIUI right now, but try this:

Settings-> system-> Pc/sync --> disable mounting.

When I pull the drop down menu down it only shows USB storage - On/Off and it's currently on.

Under settings/system I have Date & Time / Language & Input / Battery / SD Card / USB (if I open this only Mount SD card and Ask on connection appear) / Button / Dock / About Phone.

Sorry if I am being difficult. You are all probably thinking this lady doesn't even need a phone! lol I do appreciate your help and patience.
