Apps for Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Hi Folks,

I'm giving serious thought to buying a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 but I'm unclear about the range and choice of apps for tablets having never owned one before.

I did have a look at Android Market but could only find featured tablet apps.

Would anyone care to enlighten me?

The Android Market website is not as helpful in searching for apps compared to the Market app on the tablet itself in my opinion. You might look through the categories or try searching. https://market.android.com/apps/PRODUCTIVITY?feature=category-nav There are also discussions on several of the Android forums of essential apps. For example: Android Applications - Android Forums and Must Have Apps on the Galaxy Tab 10.1

I agree completely with ShaykhAbdul's comments. If this is your first Android device, be prepared to invest some time and patience in learning, setting it up the way you want it and exploring apps. It will be worth it. If you are coming from an Android phone it is an easy transition.

Hi JPC, the 4G Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the BEST tablet (not just Android tablets) on the market. As far as apps, there are enough at the Android Market. The following are the apps that I have downloaded from the Market and they are sufficient to fulfill all my mobile needs...

I have had a galaxy tab 10.1 since the summer and have LOVED it. The best tablet for watching movies, beautiful widescreen and super super thin!!!(maybe the reason for lack of ports)..but many apps are compatible with it and when it gets ICS it will be SWEET. I'm amazed by it on my galaxy nexus. :thumbup:

I bought the Tab partly as a writing pad, but out of the box it was pretty much useless. The touch screen lags and handwriting is unreadable unless your speed is that of a third grader practicing his ABCs. Unfortunately (or fortunately, as the case may be) the only option is to root the device, and install an app called TouchScreenTune.

For videos, I like BS Player with the ARM7 add on for HW acceleration. I find some videos jitter/stutter with the stock player.

From my notes alongside, you will see that I own an HTC Wildfire S so I wouldn't be coming in from a cold start.

Hey I'll give you a low down of all my apps as there are many that do similar things and these have just come to be the ones i've stuck with.
1)Dropbox-Very useful for transporting files between devices. I have it on my comp, phone, ipod, and now my galaxy tab 10.1. Especially since there are no ports i find this app very helpful.
2)Evernote-Similar to dropbox. I only have the free version which is used for notes and such and you can sync them like dropbox through all your devices that you have evernote on.
3)Heywire-This is a texting app that all you need is a data connection and you just type in the persons number or use your contacts and just send texts easy as that. I also use google talk for this, but not everyone i know uses android(YET!).
4)Swype-This isn't from the market it's already pre-installed on your tab. I'm just mentioning it so your aware if you are not already. Swype is another input method or anything keyboard if you will, that you may trace your fingers along the letters to form the word you want. I find Swype to be the fastest input method for me over others I have tried and I like the correction system and how it operates. Just my opinion on it.

After all that I don't have my tab at hand right now and can't remeber the others. I know i have a few games, but i wanted to stick with the productive/useful apps I really find handy.

I know what you mean, one easy thing to do is zoom in and write big and legible, then when you zoom out it can be read smaller!! Also, that's why they make Android Bluetooth keyboards!! Haha

I didn't have quite such a negative reaction to the stock touch screen performance, but I agree that TouchScreenTune has made a tremendous improvement. Also, the latest update has specifically addressed screen handwriting.

For the OP, Crackle, Google Earth, and Pinball Deluxe are a joy on the tab.

ICS is just code name for "ice cream sandwich", the new Android operating system android 4.0. It is a "sandwich" of android 2.3(gingerbread for phones) and android 3.1-2(honeycomb for tablets). Basically it is just a operating system for both phones and tablets, like iOS is with apple devices. You will see many, many more applications for ICS bc apps will be more compatible. My new galaxy nexus has it and I really like it, much more user friendly than previous android OS's and the galaxy tab 10.1 will get ICS in an OTA update. Let me know if I need to clarify anything else! :thumbup:

I just noticed that you are in England. So you might not have 4G Tab there. The 4G Galaxy Tab 10.1 is with Verizon Wireless in the United States and was released in the Fall (Autumn) of 2011. If I am not mistaken, it is the newest variant of all Galaxy Tab. Although it is not officially acknowledged, I suspect this newest variant has resolved some of the issues found on the earlier variants (e.g. the WiFi-only variant), because I don't have any of the issues that were commonly posted on the non-4G Tab.

With that being said, if you are not in a big hurry, you might want to check out the Galaxy Tab 11.6 which will be officially unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2012 in February. It has a slightly larger form factor with smaller bezel to give you the largest screen size of all tablets. It is capable of 2560 x 1600p Full HD. It has the 2GHz dual-core Exynos processor, running Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. It will also has Google Beam that allows you to sync with other ICS devices.

Furthermore, when Galaxy Tab 11.6 is announced, they might reduce the price of the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

So, there's a larger beast about to be unleashed from the Samsung stable. I like the size of the 10.1 and would probably want to stay with this but I take your point about the price possibly dropping when the 11.6 is released. Now, can I wait that long?

No problem, happy to help. I would also like to recommend swipepad. It's not as useful on the tab as the phone, due to the recent running apps button. If your not aware already all you have to do is swipe from wherever you assign swipepad to (whether it's top left corner or right, or the left top half side of the phone etc.) to the center of the phone and it pops up with 12 shortcuts to anything that you assign to them (setting shortcuts, apps, direct messaging to people are just a few that I use it for). This is by far the most useful app I have on my phone and even though there is the running apps button I still find this very useful on the tab.

I looked and the only thing I could find is that it has been confirmed it will definitely get an official update for ICS. Everything says Q1 or Q2 of 2012 so that is good. There are builds out right now for rooted devices. I prefer to keep mine unrooted though. I would be worried I would mess something up. Haha.

As far as I know, all the Galaxy S II will get ICS update around summer. So I assume that the Galaxy tab will be around the same time frame, if not later.
