I tried Avast. The one thing that put me off it its notification demands. It requires its avast icon in the notification bar constantly. If you remove it from the bar in the settings, then it does not appear to scan new incoming apps (it even tells you that you wont get as good protection without it when you switch it off in the settings). When the icon is there and you download an app, you then see Avast kick in to scan it, without it you do not get such scanning. :(

Just be careful if you install the remote features of Avast. It creates an admin user to do so (as per any other app would) but it is difficult to uninstall (ie. it cannot be uninstalled via Applications) The only way I found was to uninstall via Titanium Backup

I have to say I'm happy with AVG. This does a real-time scan in the notification bar without needing its icon there constantly.

Let me know if this changes with Avast, as I wouldnt mind using it, as I've protected my PC for years with it and find it very good.
