I got a Nexus, wife just got an iPhone

I've been enjoying my Nexus, but I did get a little envious of her iPhone where the first day she had it the battery life was beyond impressive.

I made her use it all day for music, streaming, web surfing, texting, calls, etc. She really put it through a good test and after like 9 hours of use (according to it's stats on the phone) she still had 30% left of battery when we went to bed. That's good. My friends with iPhones have also confirmed the great battery life...so needless to say, I was jealous.

I got into heavy consideration of swapping my Nexus for an iPhone.

So when I got home last night, I stole her phone and started playing with. One thing I've always liked about the iPhone is the design. I like the size, the look, the feel, all of it. So I kept playing with it, might have a few more app possibilities but nothing to make me switch. Android will catch up eventually. I decided I could get along without my to do list and calender widgets, but I did miss my toggles for GPS and Bluetooth....instead of having to go through menus on the iPhone....but with the battery life and leaving them on, who cares?

It was really starting to be a wash, then she asked me to put some different things on the phone as ringtones and what not from her last phone (an android). I go upstairs to do it and start running into problems. It won't work with an MP3. I have to convert it to acc in itunes, then put it back to the desktop, then change the extension, then back into itunes, then onto the phone. It worked, but what a hassle.

Then the only thing you have access to on the iPhone in explorer are pictures. This means I can't use my phone as a "thumb drive" which I do a lot with work out of convenience.

So it really boils down to...iPhone wins in a big way with battery....maybe slightly in design, though I still love the look of the Nexus. The Nexus however, destroys the iPhone in user friendliness. I know that's a big iPhone thing about the interface and how it's easy, which is probably true as a phone and multimedia device, but if you want to use it for anything else you're out of luck.

I still have until the 15th to decide, as most of us probably due with new phones, but I think after last nights experiences of trying to customize an iPhone, just in little ways like ringtones, it seemed like a headache and planted my feet firmly in the Android camp.

Does anyone else have strong opinions either way? Has anyone come from an iPhone to a Nexus and liked one over the other or vice versa?

All I can really hope is that the Nexus gets an update to help with battery life and Samsung puts out a good 3000mah battery that keeps the phone thin, then I'd be very happy.

Just need help making this final decision.

i really dont like the size of the Iphone. not ideal for movies and games. also it s nicer browsing the web. I like the the fact that the GN is 4g, and that everything is Googled. From my emails, to my contacts, to my Voice messages, to my calander, to my music, to my videos, to my(you add something). WAY more apps with android then Iphone and way more free apps. i LOVE LOVE LOVE how it syncs with the market. None of this itunes crap where you either DL it to your pc and then connect your phone or you have to physically be on your phone to download it over the air. android you click it on the market and instant download.

just going to say turn your 4g off then compare,,,

only thing i miss from iphone is visual voice mail,,, and that is the only thing i miss,,,

IOS is starting to get dated IMHO,,,

+1, iOS is very boring and bland, IMO. Even with the notifications being revamped, it's still just the same page after page of icons.

And, you can just use Google Voice and get visual voice mail for free.

Well that and the fact that Google Voice is terrible. I've been using it since almost day 1 and it still hasn't gotten a voicemail correct. I use it because at least this way the audio is still available to me and I don't have to worry about a full mailbox like I do with Verizon. But for visual voicemail it's worthless other than getting phone numbers correct and dial-able with 2 clicks.

WAY more apps with android then Iphone and way more free apps.

Android market has more FREE apps than Apple. However, in terms of QUALITY APPS (utlitity, games, etc), Apple store blows Android. Android market is full of crappy (and sometimes, creepy) apps. Sure, the apps in the Apple store cost money (vs. free on Android), but the quality seems to be better.

On Apple, you get the latest games immediately. On Android, you need to wait months if not longer to get the same games. And when you talk quality games, Apple has them (e.g. Infinity Blade, Madden, etc.)...Android got nothing.

So, given this current state b/w the stores, i prefer the quality (but more costly) Apple store. YMMV.

Not sure about ICS, but Gingerbread still allows apps to rein free even after you exit them...killing battery life. Apple is pretty consistent in closing an app after exiting.

As for "widgets" on iPhone, this is a good one if anyone is interested: iPhone Settings Shortcuts by Jeff Broderick

Go to this site on your iPhone...and download the "widget-like" icons on your iPhone...perfectly safe and Apple-certified! Oh yeah, it is FREE. I love these little shortcuts. Not as direct as Android widgets, but very very cool and useful.

None of this itunes crap where you either DL it to your pc and then connect your phone or you have to physically be on your phone to download it over the air. android you click it on the market and instant download.

Actually, i don't mind Apple's approach. Downloading an app (esp. a big ones) to your laptop is a lot quicker with Wifi...and then throwing it over to your iPhone is also quick. Downloading via air (esp, without Wifi) takes forever AND often results in app being frozen during download process bc of drop 3G/4G signals. So, it is always best to download an app via Wifi...and if that is the case, then both iPhone and Android phones do this equally well.

I just switched back from an iPhone 4s (wife still has one). I took a break from Android for a good bit. I am blown away by this Nexus. I forgot how much I really enjoy Android. I mean, sure...the iPhone 4s was a great looking device and TONS of apps that work perfectly....but I realized something. If it weren't for the apps....I never would have carried an iPhone. I can carry this Nexus and not download a single app, and be satisfied. That says a lot, IMO.

Hopefully I don't get flamed for this, but I personally think you should join your wife and get the iPhone. Most of the limitations you mentioned on iOS can be overcome by apps (such as apps that allow you to wirelessly transfer files from the computer to the phone). There are also apps that easily allow you to make ringtones, both on the computer or on the phone itself. And of course, if you really get the itch, there's always Jailbreak, which allows even further customization (an untethered Jailbreak for iPhone 4S is coming very soon).

The other noteworthy thing is that your wife already has an iPhone. So if you also had one, you'd be able to share apps that you've purchased. That's a pretty big deal IMO. Also, you'd be able to use iMessage together, which allows you to use the data network easily and effectively to send SMS/MMS without using the carrier's messaging plan. You could Facetime together as well. Ultimately, it would just make it easier to and more fun to use the phones together.

And since you mentioned that you are not in a good 4G coverage area and will likely not be taking advantage of LTE, then you might as well enjoy a 3G phone with great battery life for now (you can always switch to LTE again when coverage is better in your area, etc).

Just my opinion, as a former iPhone user. I love my Nexus and my wife also has an iPhone, so I'm not taking my own advice. But we have good 4G here and I absolutely love it!

Good luck with your decision.

If you pulled the market and app store from the devices, I personally would stay happy with the Nexus and not get bored as quickly as the iPhone. That being said, of course I have apps. I have tons of apps. Thats the beauty of smartphones.....

This is a REALLY good point.

But yes, I agree- to each their own and to reflect what Travisimo and Jedii said, I think the OP should keep an eye on Android/Nexii, but may want to consider an iPhone. The point about sharing apps is a very good one, and also if your wife has a problem/issue/question you'll have to think about it less the more familiar you are with the OS. I don't mean that last part as a sexist commentary on women and being tech-savvy (there are a lot of super tech-savvy women out there), I mean it as in you are here on the forums asking the question and she is not, therefore you are probably the default "problem-solver."

My wife has an iPhone 4S through work (nice job huh?) So I get to play with them side by side too. I did an interesting test. On YouTube, search "1080p demo." Pick the same video, and play them both to get them in sync. While both are crisp and clear, the colors leap off the Nexus, while they're nice but sort of flat on the iPhone.

Yes, the battery is better on her iPhone. Like the poster above said, it's a 3G phone, not 4G. I don't fuss about battery life. I keep a charger at work, one at home.

There is nothing on the iPhone that would make me even consider switching. Not even close.

I see the android ios debate is still a bitter rivalry.

I like both phones. Wish I could use each for a month and then decide.

I just played a game for 4 minutes on the Nexus and battery went down 5%...that's kind of ridiculous.

I basically want the iphone with ICS....that'd make me happy.

we get rezound guy come here and claimis his device got better hardwares, then SGSII guy.. and IPHONE guy and it keep rotating :D

And I will never understand that. I don't go to the Rezound forums. Or the Apple forums. I want to have a nice discussion with other owners of the phone to learn a bit and maybe help a bit. I have never once gone into a forum of a phone I don't own and start slamming it.

To keep this on topic... the iPhone is a great device. It really is. I happen to prefer the Androis OS and the hardware on the GNex in particular is just simply breathtaking. I do count myself lucky that I'm in a dual-OS household so I can see them both side to side :)

Well... completely back on track, to the OP, you have the best possible situation from which to make a judgment. You have both devices, at home, and can play with them. Ultimately, the phone has to do what you want it to do. There are a lot of people that look at my GNex and say, "Wow, that's too big for me." And that's fine. There's tons of great phones on the market that you can, with a little research, find one that fits you exactly.
