Ok, I have a few questions.. First of all the ROM versions such as my XWKDD.. what does this mean and does it have to be the same on any ROM I use? Second... Kernels.. Can I use any kernel I choose or does its version have to match my rom? Third... Modems.. How does all this work? Can i use any modem version i want? Which one works best in what area and with what carriers? any help on these topics would be well appreciated. Thanks, Alex.

Welcome to Android Forums!

Ok, I have a few questions.. First of all the ROM versions such as my XWKDD.. what does this mean and does it have to be the same on any ROM I use?

See this thread for details, but basically the first two letters indicate a generic or carrier-specific firmware while the last three indicate year, month and build. The handset can be updated with any GT-i9100 firmware.

Second... Kernels.. Can I use any kernel I choose or does its version have to match my rom?

That depends. If rooting a device it's advisable to use an insecure version of the same (or a very close) kernel. Third-party kernels may or may not have their own particular restrictions; some only work with Samsung-based firmware, others can also work with AOSP builds such as CyanogenMod and MIUI.

Third... Modems.. How does all this work? Can i use any modem version i want? Which one works best in what area and with what carriers?

Again, in theory any modem (baseband) can be used. Many of us have installed various ones over time without mishap but it carries more of a (slight) risk. As to which one works best.... that's why we keep experimenting. Right now the LP1 modem from the last-but-one ICS leak seems to be giving most people slightly better sensitivity i.e. a stronger signal, for example.

I hope this helps?
