This is good news and developers and us! Now the developer can create apps without worrying about the limited space for their app!

I wonder if this in turn will mean better and more robust apps for android devices? One can hope!

The only thing I worry about is them getting a little too robust for the processor to handle. I don't see it being a huge problem in the beginning, but with the higher end processors that the Moto Droid and now the Nexus have this could spell trouble for some phones (like ours) later on.

For developers, yes. For us, maybe, maybe not. More available space can mean more bloat and bloat almost always means slow. Personally, I'm the type that favors software that can "do one thing and do it well" vs "do hundreds or thousands of things half-a**".

I think developers will be smart about how "big" they make their apps. They've done a great job, for the most part, of keeping things lean.

@hallstevenson I completely agree. Simple apps that work great are always the ones that stand out to me. As long as developers keep that in mind the Android Market will really take off.

Weird. I was about to ask if I could store apps on the SD card since [for some reason] I can't use the Market.

This might be a silly question, but the article says "they will offer an upgrade soon for installing apps on the SD card." Is there a chance of that upgrade costing money, or will it probably be free?

Great news! I've been wondering why this was not included since I first read about this phone... Seems so silly to have so little storage room for apps, when the iPhone has so much.

Hey, this seems as good as any a place as any to bring up SD card speed; seems quite pertinent to the speed of apps running off the external memory...

I've fully accepted that I'm not going to have a cutting-edge phone until the contract's up on my Eris, and I'm fine with that--I love this phone. However, I'm thinking of ways to eke out as much performance as I can. (I'm eyeing that Seido 1750 mAH battery, for instance, though I'd like to hear how well it works before plunking down $50 for it).

Anyway, I'm also eyeing higher-class SD cards. I'd love to buy a class 6, 16gb card, but I've never had any experience with differently-class micro SD cards: the one that shipped with my Eris is Class 2, which I understand is the slowest--according to Wikipedia, maxes out at 2 Mbytes/second write speed. Class 6 (surprisingly enough) maxes out at 6 Mbytes/second. Each class has correspondingly higher read speeds as well, obviously.

Has anybody tried a higher class SD card in their phone? Did it make a noticeable difference? Is it worth the (relatively hefty) price increase? Does the Eris have the capability to take advantage of the higher read/write speeds?

Again, it's not such a huge issue now (though it'd be nice to decrease some of the hesitation when the phone accesses photos and music), but if apps start running off the SD card, it seems the cards' speed might come into play.

The class 6 cards are definitely faster for writing, but that is a moot for most of the apps that use the SD card on the Eris. Yes, it will store your pictures from the camera faster and it will save your documents faster from Docs 2 go. The problem is that most of the apps you are talking about media player, camera, doc reader, etc are just reading the information. A class 6 won't play a song faster than a class 2 (if it does the time would really not be noticeable) because they don't read any faster. Now, when apps are running off of the SD card.......

Has anyone tried a 32GB card on the Eris? I think back to a laptop I had that worked with a large card, but had a much lower rated capacity published. Getting it to recognize the (much) larger card was a software hack.

I think the Eris will only take cards up to 16 Gb right now. Maybe with later software updates the size will increase.

I think a "Run, don't walk, back to the store you got the phone from and return is based on the fact that you are too stupid to own such a device." response is more appropriate.

I came looking for this answer as I vaguely recall them saying it at the Google PR release... glad it was said on the record it is coming and the reference is made on the web.
