Help OTA Update rolling out. Version 2.17.651.5 - Sprint

Just got the updated. It definitely looks like Carrier IQ is gone.

But I noticed new service that I didn't see before: Smith.
Does anybody know what kind of service is this?

I don't know how I know the name (maybe it was a background process that ran before? - or a name I've just heard around). But I am guessing "Smith" has something to do with Smith Micro?
Mobile Data Offload, Connection Management & More | Smith Micro
If I had a wild guess, A Smith Micro application or resource would be my best guess?

(com.android.smith is the process name - googling got me nowhere)

If you pull down the notification bar and tab over to quick settings there is there a new toggle for enabling and disabling 'Power Saver'? Or was that always there before and I'm just blind?
I don't use power saver, it just caught my eye because it is green and all the other icons are/were blue except the settings shortcut.

---edit---
I know it was not in the original release on release day, here is a photo from a release day review that does not have it included.

I still wish there was a display brightness slider or toggle in that 'Quick Settings' tab. I've been pining for that since the Evo 4G release, I hate having to install a third party application for something so elegant. I'd rather have a brightness setting slider than an unused Power Saver toggle.

During the installation there is a green progress bar on the black screen Similar to this one:

At some point during the installation the phone restarts and the progress bar changes to a cyan blue color with an android character over it. Then it restarts and turns green again for a bit, then the update is fully installed.

Probably the first screen is for unpacking, the cyan blue screen is during the actual install, and the last screen is applying the updates and restarting. Typical process, nothing new or different here.

Looks like they have added the Emergency Alert system to our messaging application as well. (At least I haven't noticed them ever before). If you go into Messaging and then hit Menu > Settings > Emergency Alerts there are some new choices

  • Presidential Alert (greyed out, unable to opt out)
  • Extreme Alert
  • Severe Alert
  • AMBER Alert
  • Test Emergency Alert

Article from November 2011 on Sprint adding Emergency alerts across the entire Network:
Sprint plans Emergency Alert messaging system in New York City, claims this is only a test - Engadget

Also to note:
Swype version 3.21.87.28626.28659
Not sure if this is a new revision or the same version we had, just thought to post it up here.

If you are unable to manually download this update, you can get it from HTC directly. Thanks to TrevE for posting the link.

[ROM] STOCK 2.17.651.5 Update.zip + Radio/Firmware bits - xda-developers

He also mentions that CIQ is removed. But that Smith thing is possibly the old htclogger app that has been rebuilt. More info in the thread I linked. Also, if you're rooted, there is a root-safe build of the patch in that thread.

Bingo. Smith Micro like I suspected. Maybe I remembered that name from the early Evo 3D or old Evo 4G days and that was the old logger they used then?

The XDA thread led to 2 articles:
Sprint Selects Mobile Network Director from Smith Micro Software to Help Optimize Network Experience for Users - Yahoo! Finance
Smith Micro Software Announces Mobile Network Director? Solution To Manage Data Overload For Mobile Operators

I noticed in the Smith.apk settings (*#*#76484#*#*), they are very Gingerbread specific and specifically set to expire 03/30/12. Not to say that they can't extend that date somehow, but I'm willing to bet we might get ICS before 03/30/12. It falls in line with the Q1 predictions from Sprint and HTC too. This current update is a band aid until 03/12, and they are right now working on the ICS build I'd bet? Its not really new info, maybe just further confirmation of suspicions?

I like the way you're thinking. I would think that they would bake in a bit extra time, just for last minute bug fixes. But if we keep talking about this, we probably should move the convo to the http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-3d/426742-ics-anticipation-thread-3.html.

My battery life is wayyyyyyy better now. Been doing my normal everyday routine and my battery icon hasnt moved yet.

Very nice! I'm thinking about flashing the new radio and kernel (I'm rooted, so I avoid the OTAs)

If you were one of the lucky ones that was able to keep the camera shutter sound off after the last update, this one does turn it back on with no option of turning it off. Sound is on in silent mode too.

I'm not happy about this at all. Good thing I have the Amaze Camera App.

Im actually glad to hear there are others with growing concerns. Please report your concerns about forced camera sound effects to HTC as soon as you possibly can. They CAN fix this we just have to let them know loud and clear what we would like. We shouldn't have to work around their bad decision to remove the user's choice. I have an open case with them and I checked in with them recently, it sounds like not enough people have contacted them about it yet.

Contact HTC

I believe that the Smith-Micro package started as a service for carriers and manufacturers to manage OTA updates, that's what it's been used for since the Evo at least. Clearly, their role is expanding. I hope it's for the best. As those of us who experienced better network operations when getting rid of sending everything through the Sprint proxies (and not everyone did), I'd like to think that there's some evidence there that Sprint could certainly use some help with network management. Hopefully, that won't turn into something nefarious as well.

As you've probably all read, Sprint shut down their CIQ servers and wanted no further black eyes over it. It wouldn't surprise me that removing all background CIQ processes would improve battery life, others have noted the same either with root or on other phones.

Excellent detective work on the settings and 3/2012 catch! :)
