Help OTA Update rolling out. Version 2.17.651.5 - Sprint

The new kernel and radio were available for flashing a couple of hours after the OTA hit the air. I recommend some caution with the new radio. I took the one with the new ramdisk and it caused my phone to crash intermittently.

Also, there are a few ICS alphas flying around. They're getting close to beta. That's what people mean by rooters get updates first. I had an ICS ROM on my phone for a week. I went back to GB while they clean up their ROM a bit.

How did you like from what was working, what was your favorite part of the ICS that was working so far ?? I was going to flash the alpha but figured I would wait for a Beta version first.

The alpha is ok...it devours battery, though (as of alpha 4, at least). But I was loving the AOSP ICS experience. Hopefully HTC doesn't totally gut all the nifty features. Like being able to freeze bloatware from the Manage Applications page. But the new browser is slick and I like the new Recent Apps feature. I have a HC tablet, so I was already used to the way it's presented. But being able to close an app by bringing up the recent apps and swiping them off the screen is real nice.

And the launcher is very much like the third party launchers (ADW, Go Launcher, Launcher Pro). Unfortunately, I'm sure HTC will make it so the Sense launcher doesn't reflect the ICS one.

I believe that the Smith-Micro package started as a service for carriers and manufacturers to manage OTA updates, that's what it's been used for since the Evo at least. Clearly, their role is expanding. I hope it's for the best. As those of us who experienced better network operations when getting rid of sending everything through the Sprint proxies (and not everyone did), I'd like to think that there's some evidence there that Sprint could certainly use some help with network management. Hopefully, that won't turn into something nefarious as well.

As you've probably all read, Sprint shut down their CIQ servers and wanted no further black eyes over it. It wouldn't surprise me that removing all background CIQ processes would improve battery life, others have noted the same either with root or on other phones.

Excellent detective work on the settings and 3/2012 catch! :)

Hey Early, long time no see. Hope everything has been well with you. Glad to see you around and I hoped you would weigh in. I realize you are rooted - some devs have applied the changed already - but this was the long awaited maintenance release to help clean up and revitalize things! We wanted this months ago. Now we are on the doorstep (hopefully) of official Ice Cream Sandwich.

Good thoughts on Smith.apk and CIQ. XDA did the hard work, I just saw the date when poking through the service menu after they posted the dialer code. The date could be inconsequential but I like to suppose.

Updated in NJ on the 13th.

The only thing that I am having an issue with is that ADW needs to update because it isn't working right. The screen keeps blinking and even though it is set to default it doesn't launch on restart. Obviously that's not an HTC issue.

On the plus side Rosie seems to be snappier than she used to be, but that may just be placebo due to not having used it since the 10 cents sale when I purchased the launcher. Oh well I was due change it up for a while.

Great to be back! :)

We've been swamped adding members (how about it, AF is over 860,000 members strong, nearly 400,000 more since we met on the Evo forum!) and we've been busy getting things organized and stuff. :) I hope to be here every day now, there's no friends like old friends - plus, seriously -

We have the 3vo! :)

I've been enjoying the Amaze camera sideload, proves what a nice update can do (no root required).

I'm with you, I think that this is a baseline update to prepare everyone for ICS. Now the fat is trimmed and the radios are updated, that's good preparation in my opinion.

Once again, I recommend a good backup strategy so you can do a factory reset to clear the caches without losing your data. I recommend MyBackup Pro for non-root or MyBackup Root or Titanium for root users.

That's the first line of user defense when things act goofy after any major update.

I had a similar problem after flashing the new kernel. Unfortunately, the only fix I found for it was to clear data on ADW and rebuild my settings from scratch. Restoring a backup didn't seem to fix it for me. Maybe it would for you?

After the update, my battery life didn't seem to be noticeably improved the first day. I rebooted for an unrelated reason, and yesterday I saw a pretty noticeable improvement. Normally, after about 6 hours of moderate to heavy use, my phone is below 25%. Yesterday I was only down to 50%. Will have to do more testing to see if it consistent. I wonder how much of that improvement was due to removing CIQ?

I just check to see if any updates were available, and I was surprised to see a system update was available for my phone. Other than it stated to be a " security update" - I wonder what other goodies were added into it. It was a big file too. It took about one minute or two over WiFi. Version 2.17.651.5.

You get a bunch of firmware updates. Including a new radio and new kernel that are reported to increase battery life. The 'security upgrade' is the Carrier IQ removal. Some are speculating that removing CIQ is what is causing the big battery increase. Which is completely possible.

TrevE and others on XDA are hashing out what the new logging tool is up to currently. And if you use Peep, you get an updated copy of it. It sounds a lot less than it actually is.

I just had my phone freeze on the task manager and restart itself after a minute of being frozen on it. Im on the new update btw. First time it has ever froze like that hmmm. I also noticed once or twice since the update that when entering the messaging window itll show only the first or second conversation threads and the rest of them will be blank untill i tap something to reload it and all will be good. I assume htc will work out the small bugs and eventually roll out another update

Corpse11,

Where do you clear data and cache, and what is your version of Market?

To expand on what marc pointed out, you'll find the Market options under Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > All tab. If you scroll to Market and open it up, you'll see a clear data and a clear cache option. I recommend clearing data (it'll clear the cache and FC the app automatically). Then just reopen the market and it should download the newest one.

Thanks.
I did that. Then I opened Market and it prompted me to accept agreement. Then I checked the version and it was the same as before I cleared data and cache: 3.4.4. I guess I got new Market when I installed update.
