After having a long list of issues with my friends captivate including salted hash, bad rom flashes, cm7 bugs, lost clockwork recovery, odin, download mode, bad usb cables, etc etc etc. Almost everything that should've worked didn't. Make a real real long story short. I can no longer get into download mode. I have done it before, I know the process, have done it with this phone, same laptop, same usb cable... and no luck. Three button combo dosnt work... and I'm stuck in the at&t logo once again. This time I just can't get into download mode. Is there any other tricks out there that I don't know about to get this phone up and running again? Or do I have to get jig-y with it?

O.k. ... yesterday I went to radio shack and bought some 100k ohm 1/2 watt 5% tolerance resistors and made a jig myself. I now call it gettin jigy with it. Worked like a charm. But the problem at hand for me is I can't restore the recovery image via clockworkmod. If you hit restore you get an error. Is that why so many people have to resort to odin over and over again?

Sounds like jig time to me. They ship fast and for $7 they are real nice to have. I bought one before I flashed anything and am glad I did LOL! Needed it more than once so far.

Whats the reason for having to resort to the jig all the time? do you also get that error when trying to restore your backup in clockwork? This phone is really flim flam. I like the phone but my samsung indulge has never gave me this much trouble.

I have made some really bad flashes and it saved my butt LOL! Now I tend to use it all the time, because it's fast and efficiant. That is the only reason really. I ordered a pre made one.

Clockwork is a little wanky sometimes from what I have read. I stay away from it to flash roms. I use Odin one clicks to go back to stock, before I flash a ROM in general. I have very little trouble as I am starting from scratch. A little more time consuming, but I learned from bad flashes that it is easier in the long run to start from rooted stock. I tend to flash roms that have one clicks as well, to avoid having to deal with CW. I also don't worry about Nandroid backups, I keep my phone very minimal and if I lose everything, I can just reimport my contacts, pics, and some APK's from my PC and set it back up. I don't worry to much about texts or apps. I can have my phone back up in about 20-30 Minutes from a factory reset.

Just my .02 cents anyway

I can't even get into recovery mode ... I tried to flash a rooted+leaked 2.3.5 back to 2.2.1, and it failed. No matter what I've tried, all I get is the "firmware upgrade failed, try using recovery mode" screen. I don't even get the charging battery display.

What are you trying to use to get back to 2.2.1? Can you get into download Mode? You may also want to start another thread for this, more people will see it, but I will do what I can from here.

I was using the one-click java executable, which failed to flash properly, and now it can't get into download *or* recovery. The battery was acting a bit flaky before I tried the downgrade, if that makes a difference. I've got a jig on its way, arriving tomorrow, with a used AT&T 2.2 Captivate also coming within the next week or so just in case it has become nothing more than an expensive coaster.

Right on, the jig is nice to have for sure. Let us know what happens once you get it in.

After the jig, odin, upgrade to 2.2 via mini kies, root, the 3e recovery zip placed in system/bin... I can't get rom manager to flash clockworkmod. I have done this exact same process twice before with the same phone. Any other way to flash roms or clockwork? Or did I go too far with 2.2? Do you normally do everything from 2.1?

I to go pretty much just like that. Odin1click stock 2.1 w/ bootloaders:

[Stock ROMs](OneClicks Master Collection)+[Kernels (Stock & w/ CWM)]+[Modems] UPDATED - xda-developers

Then Keiss to 2.2

Root with super 1-click,

Then I use root explorer and use this guide:

[RECOVERY] 3e Recovery Modded w/ No Verification - xda-developers

Then download and run Rom Manager from Market.

I have never had a problem when I did it this way. I would need to do some more digging.

Right now I am on official 2.3.5 rooted, and have flashed only one rom to play around with it. it was this:

[ROM][2.3.5]KK4 Saurom Ed. 16locks|15toggles|14Power| ONE CLICK ADDED - xda-developers

It has a 1click install. I prefer to use roms that have 1click simply to avoid the hassel with CW and getting past the signiture verification crap. It has been a while since I flashed a 2.2 rom.

You could alternativley try this:

【Guide】How To flash Captivate ROMs from Stock (inc. Gingerbread ROMs) - xda-developers

But personally I would go to 2.3.5 officail root it and there are a bunch of Kernels out there that have CWM infused that you can swap out via odin and roms galore.
