Youmail vs. google voice

Sorry if this has been answered but....

I like some of the features of google voice, but I don't like the voicemail feature.. it never transcribes the voicemail to text quite right and the app doesn't always connect. I want to use youmail for my voicemail, but would like to keep the text and google phone number. is this possible?

I don't know a whole lot about GV but your phone is programmed to forward calls to a specific voicemail server... by default, it's VZW's. With GV, if you have a Google phone number, calls are routed through Google's servers before they hit your phone, and I doubt Google allows you to change the voicemail server.

So for your Google number, you probably can't use YouMail... but for your original number, you can. You'll just run 2 apps.

I thought the same thing, but installed it anyway to give it a try. I have not excluded it on Auto Task Manager, and my phone has been running at about 24% awake time. So, either they tweaked the app, or task manager is killing it every 30 minutes. Battery life does not seem to be affected by the addition of YouMail.

It actually works pretty well.

Yeah, I previously had a Blackberry and loved YouMail. When I switched over to my Eris though, I noticed the YouMail app didn't let the phone sleep. I've been using GV and am perfectly happy with it. Sure, the transcriptions aren't always accurate, but YouMail requires you to pay if you want transcriptions at all. And it's pretty easy to click the Play button if the transcription isn't accurate and just listen to the voicemail.

I've never had any connection issues with GV.

It actually works pretty well.

Just checked on androlib and it says the app was updated 202 hrs ago, so that is almost 8 and half days. Maybe they did fix the problems.

There is a distinction to be drawn between the use of YouMail for your voicemail service and the use of the app for visual voicemail purposes.

They are not mutually exclusive. I liked the features of Youmail automatically identifying the caller by name. All you have to do is forward your busy/no answer forwarding to YouMail to have it answer your calls.

Using the app is an additional feature--handy, of course, but not required.

When you set up a youmail account they will give you the codes (lack of a better word) needed to change the forwarding on your phone. This will redirect your calls to youmail instead of the current location. Pretty similar to what you originally did with GV.

Well I use GV a lot and all I did was disable the voice mail on it so every call will go to my VZW voice mail, its being working great and also GV is not only a voice mail service, you can txt, call and receive calls using another phone # and not use your minutes depending on the plan you have and carrier.

Youmail I was told is a great app and offer good features but the problem is that it will keep your phone 100% of the time awake, what I mean is that your battery will die faster since your phone will keep on running non stop.

I've been using ribbit mobile as well as google voice. Their transcription is better but no app for us. I'm fine with getting a Txt of the voice mail though. Just thought it was worth mentioning if you looking for alternatives.

You just follow the instructions on the YouMail website to forward your no answer/busy calls to its phone #.

Just in case someone didn't get the word, YouMail has fixed the 24/7 awake issue and it works great (and has for some time)!

I've tried everything to get youmail not to stop playing the voice message when I rotate the phone, or have my ear hit the screen, causing the screen to change.

Why doesn't the phone sensor detect the phone is near your face??? It's like using your phone without that feature. Your face and ear would never let you get through a call if the screen was on all the time...

I've searched and don't see a bunch of complaints on this. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

The only problem I have with YouMail is that I can't play back a message through Bluetooth. They claim it's a hardware/OS issue that's completely beyond their control, though.

What phone and BT headset are you using?


I have the Samsun Captivate (galaxy S) with a Motorola H12 and a Motorola H15.

I just tested it and with the H12 it does not work on headset. It just gives another option for the speaker on the phone which oddly enough increases the volume.

BUT,

With my motorola H15 headset it works fine. The H15 will also do txt to speech and speech to text.

So.. I think the problem is with your BT headset.

On another note.... I find the Youmail app leaves a lot to be desired. It's speaker output is horribly low, the app stops playing the VM when the screen rotates, doesn't black out the screen when put to your ear, and won't allow you to play back a personal outgoing message I just recorded so I can see if I like it.


For all the raves... I just don't get it.

By the way, YouMail just released an update that supposedly allows you to record your personal greeting from the app itself. I haven't tested it because I like the Smart Greeting anyway.

Yes, I got the latest update and you can record your personal greeting, but you can't play it back to make sure it sounds OK.

Kinda lame....

I like the smart greeting also, but for business I have to stick with a custom.
