    hey guys,
so there is a new software update that sprint is releasing.

    i just saw this:
HTC EVO 4G receives OTA update to 4.67.651.3
More Sprint Devices Receive Security Updates – HTC Evo and Design 4G Added To The Mix

here is what the ota contains:
    HTC EVO 4G Software Update – 4.67.651.3
    Enhancements/Fixes:
    - Security Update
    - Updated Peep client ( to align with Twitter)
    - Battery life improvements

please do not accept it. resist the urge to do so. it will most likely not do anything. but this is a good time to start developing good flashing habits now. most ota's will have a negative affect on your rooted phone.

here is what accepting an ota will do on a rooted phone:

    1. usually ota's will close and previous exploits used to gain root. sometimes ota's will unroot your phone and you will then be stuck waiting for the devs to find another exploit to use to re-gain root and as time goes by it will get harder and harder to root.

2.it could put your phone in an unusual state where you will be either with s-on and have a custom rom and recovery or s-off but with the latest ota unrooted rom and stock recovery. in either case it is slightly more difficult to get your phone back inline.

3.the last thing it can do is brick your phone.

please read this thread where i go into more details about it:
    http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ur-gingerbread-2-3-3-evo-but-now-you-can.html

Update: so here is the info on what the software version, radio, hboot and android os version:

    UPDATE
    H Boot 2.18.001
    base band 2.15.00.12.19
    Kernel 2.6.35.10-g4b48446
    android 2.3.5

edit:looks like captian throwback has a way that you can root your evo if you took the update. this method still uses htc's method of unlocking the bootloader, however he has found a way to gain s-off and not have your bootloader watermarked.

    so here it is:
    http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/488901-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

I think it's similar to the 3VO update that just got pushed out. The "security update" and "battery improvements" were due to the removal of CIQ and it's logging. No clue on what effect it'll have on a rooted phone though...

yeah most roms have ciq removed anyways so no real need to accept this ota.

Trust me guys custom rom/recovery on an S-ON device is no fun I had to call on the help of a Revolutionary dev to get me out of a pickle once.

Did you mean a custom ROM and recovery on a device that has been unrooted by an OTA update? A custom ROM and recovery on a device that is still S-ON, but has full root access like my old Sprint HTC Hero, was never a problem for me. ;)

I could see where being unrooted and unable to reroot would not be fun and being S-OFF would fix that in a jiffy though. Fortunately, that was never the scenario with the Sprint HTC Hero. :)

    UPDATE

    base band 2.15.00.12.19
    Kernel 2.6.35.10-g4b48446
    android 2.3.5
This looks to me like a bad thing
My daughters phone will never be rooted and she got the update and this is where its at.

    New Hboot.

Poop, I wonder if the exploit is toast?

Anyone confirm if revolutionary still works?

Hopefully we get someone here to confirm soon so we can add it to the guides. Hopefully htc will release the new kernel soon so the devs can play. Wait, we don't have any kernel devs anymore. :(

    GGGGGGRRRRAHHHH!!
/begins to rage, turns green, smashes a bunch of expensive stuff, calms down, regrets smashing expensive stuff, depression setting in....../

Yes that is correct my daughters evo is not rooted and after update is 2.18.001 also base band update to2.15.00.12.19
I believe this will close the posibility of rooting again.

Hey Mike, could you possibly try to root it and see if Revolutionary will still work?

You could always unroot it, if it works.

Wait, don't try that. You might not be able to reroot afterword.

Grrr, hafta go to work. I'll poke around XDA tonight and see if anything is floating around

If you have a custom ROM, will you be "offered" OTA updates as I did when i was unrooted with Sense?

I often was "offered" and had declined for a long time....

Then I updated all the way to latest, then Rooted...

Does this only affect those who are rooted but without a custom ROM....

Would like to be able to be sure i am not going to "accidently" accept the OTA update...
