Was wowed by the features, but now after a couple of months.....
Screen goes black WAY too soon and WAY too often. I have the screen timeout set at 10 minutes and sometimes I can't even make a call before the screen goes black again. (from pushing the power button to restore the screen until it goes black again, sometimes 10 seconds.
multiple places on the screen i have to push multiple times to get an imput to actually BE input.
I"m sending it for service, but don't hold much hope of the screen being better, have read others with same problem.
Man I wish I'd sent this back before 30 days were up.

I've had the phone for almost 3 months and I've yet to have a problem like this. I know you said others have had this problem as well, but they must be defective, as mine does not do this at all.

I agree, if this was a common problem with the phone, there would be many other posts on this forum with the same problem. Sounds like a defective phone, and despite what we would all like, nothing in life is 100% perfect.

Just found this forum. There are plenty of complaints about the touch screen elsewhere, a few on the older Exhibit forum.
Haven't seen anyone else complaining about the timeout. That's why I'm HOPING they can do something about it.
But if you know anything about Samsung, customer service is next to nil.
Wish I'd bought something else.

Complaints about the touch screen? Like what? I do have some problems around the edge every so often, but other than that, the touch screen doesn't give me any problems. All good and responsive.

Oh... Touch screen also gives me trouble when I'm not holding it. Like say I have it set on a table, seems like it doesn't realize I'm touching it at times.

For the price, I wouldn't expect much more out of a phone without a contract.

I just googled touch screen problems on the Exhibit 4G and came up with zero......

For me the screen goes black when I'm holding the phone close from my ear to call. When I stop to do that and look at the screen (example there's an answering service that wants me to type a number), it goes back to normal (sometime it's 1-2 seconds but for now it's been fast enough for me to enter any number). I'm not sure if that's your problem but does your screen goes back to normal if you do not push the power button right away ?

I'm not sure I understand really the problem but I think I've seen somewhere a kind of root tweak trying to fix a similar thing for other devices. It may be a known android issue ?

Once in a while I do have to push the screen multiple times IF it's right on the edge of the screen, I do have problems once in a while around the edges of the phone, not enough to want another phone by any means. Seriously, it looks to me like you got a defective phone and you can't judge a product from something that is defective. No matter what you buy, I GUARANTEE numerous people out there have gotten defective items in that product, that's just how things are.

The screen going black when holding it to your face is from the proximity sensor, it does that so you don't accidentally push buttons with your face while talking. I'm pretty sure there is a way to turn this off, I don't remember where in the settings it was, but I'm pretty sure there's a setting to keep the screen on at all times during a call.

It sounds to me like their screen timeout is screwed up. Assuming they set their screen timeout to a higher number than this 10 seconds, it still sounds like their screen is going off.

I you go into settings/call you can turn off the proximity sensor by unchecking it. Of course, then you are liable to hang up on someone if the phone is pressed up to your ear.

I have no experience with Samsung service on cell phones, but have had very positive experiences with hard drives and DVD/Blu-Ray drives. I have installed lots of those with very few failures and very prompt replacement on the rare occasion it happens. Maybe they will surprise you.

To the original poster - I had the same problem. If I left the screen alone it, the screen would timeout and go black in about 5 seconds regardless of the timeout setting. After rooting the phone and uninstalling the system manager application, the problem went away. You have the added benefit of possibly removing the CarrierIQ spyware, which some say is embedded in that application. There's a thread on the subject.

Just got this phone, and was having the problem with the repeated timeouts after what seemed like 10 seconds. For me the fix was to go into Display settings (not Power saving mode settings) and change the value for Screen time-out to something larger.

I kept thinking that changes to the Screen time-out parameter in Power-saving mode settings would fix it, but there was no change I could observe until I changed the corresponding value in Display settings. It's a bit confusing.

I had some issue with that as well. But I fiddled a little bit and it's better. If you have it set to use power saving mode when battery is low I think it over rides your screen timeout settings. Also my power switch is very, very sensitive. I thought I was dropping calls until I realized I was barely brushing the power button and turning phone off while holding it. That will also black out the screen as well. I've only had the phone 2 months but it seems a lot better than most peoples phones I work with.

I use easy battery freeware.

Your mileage may vary.

Just wanted to share what I recently discovered. I was having problems with my phone going black as soon as I started a call, and it wouldn't let me end the call and would "freeze" my phone. I did a factory reset, took the battery out several times. Nothing fixed it. THEN I realized it was the skin I was using on the front. I didn't know there was a sensor that would be blocked. So if you get a skin for your phone, make sure there are holes where the sensor is and don't put anything over those holes, or your phone will do this to you too. It's just too bad I didn't realize it was such an easy fix before I did a factory reset. Lost a lot of stuff doing that!
