Throttling! Coming soon to a VM (USA) phone near you

The only way this will affect you is if download 100MB + files multiple times a month and watch a LOT of "HD" videos on youtube mobile. Obviously tethering as well, though only if going to websites that have videos and stuff like that. Thethering and general intrrnet browsing will still be fine.

I usually get 1.5-2.0mbps so getting down to 256kbps(0.25mbps) is quite the downgrade.

"Watch lots of HD videos" lol your lucky you get that fast of speeds where you probably could watch HD videos without much buffering... Me on the other hand trying to watch an HD video it would buffer like every 5 seconds... (exaggeration, but still you know what I mean)

Yea my 3g speeds suck ass most of the time and I live in a pretty big city.

I live in Ogden, utah. Its a decent sized city but not really "big " . I would get about the same speed or slightly slower on my t-mobile 3g phones when i was with them. Sprint does have good coverage here though, the Salt Lake City area was one of the first areas to get their 4g service. Even out in the "boonies " i get decent coverage and speed.

they will just limit your speeds to 250kbps or less once over 2.5G, and since I don't even get that on a good day, I wont notice a thing ;)
Don't hold your breath. If you already get a fraction of the top data speed on your "good days", after throttling you will likely get the same fraction under 250kbps on those same "good days". If you get one-fourth of optimal speed now, you will get one-fourth of 250kpbs after throttling. Plan on it being similar to the old 56k days on computers.

Here's the email I received.

Hi Mr.LongPipe, :D

A Change to Your Virgin Mobile Service

Here at Virgin Mobile, our mission is to deliver an outstanding customer experience. Sometimes that
means making difficult choices in order to provide the best possible service to the greatest number of customers.

To make sure we can keep offering our Beyond Talk Plans at such great prices, we're putting a data speed reduction in place for anyone who uses over 2.5GB of data in a month.

How will it work?
Starting March 23, 2012, if you use over 2.5GB of data in a month on your Beyond Talk Plan:
Data speeds may be reduced to 256Kbps or below for the rest of your month. During this time,
you may experience slower page loads and file downloads and lags in streaming media.
If data speeds are reduced, they will return to normal as soon as your next plan month starts.
If you'd rather not wait for your new month to start, you can restart your plan immediately through
My Account.

Will it affect me?
Based on your activity for your last plan month ending in December, you shouldn't be affected.

If you continue to use the same amount of data as you did in your last plan month, you should not see
your data speeds reduced. Just to give you an idea, in order to hit 2.5GB, it's about 400,000 Mobile
Internet page views, about 90,000(!) emails (without attachments), 91 hours of streaming music
or 20 hours of video clips*.

This will not affect your ability to text or make calls with your phone.

How will I know if my data speeds have been reduced?
If you reach 2.5GB of data in a month, you will receive a text message letting you know your data speeds
will be reduced for the rest of your plan month.

By putting this data speed reduction in place, we're making sure we can deliver the same quality service
you've come to expect from Virgin Mobile. We hope you understand.

Thank you.

My 3G is so slow, throttling would be an improvement!!!

I live in LOS ANGELES < one of the biggest cities in the world, VM has piss poor 3G, I avg 150 kps, surrounded by towers. I don't recommend anyone switching over for data, VM 3G is useless.

BTW tested my MT, wifi download up to 20mps, it's not the phone.

If those stats are accurate about reaching 2.5 GB, then I should be in the clear.
