Root Thoroughly screwed up my phone

Using Titanium Backup Pro last Friday I tried moving as many apps to my SD card as possible as my internal memory was filling up and did not have enough room to download updates. I first cleared out my cache then found something that seemed to answer my prayers- changing system apps to user apps. This allowed me to "move" them to my SD card. This worked for a few things and I didn't have any noticeable problems until today- 3 days later.

I opened Titanium Backup again to see if I could move anything else, but it started stalling, saying a few of the apps that I had clicked on under "backup/restore" were not responding, then ultimately: "Activity Titanium Backup (in application Titanium Backup) is not responding. Force close or wait." Waiting does no good and I have to force close.

I then powered off the phone and back on and then lost Gmail, Google Search, Market, YouTube, and Maps (these are what I've identified thus far). I know that these were some of the apps I turned into user apps last Friday and tried to move to the SD card. I also did that to Titanium Backup.

So, I was able to get TB working long enough to attempt changing it back to a system app, but it still continues to freeze up on me. I also tried to download a new market app so I could get Gmail and the other apps back, but I can't download anything. Nothing. I can still use the phone, messenger, calendar, etc, but I can't download anything.

I noticed the following in TB as having been deleted (which I may have done on Friday, but not 100% certain):
  • com.android.email (obviously affecting my gmail)
  • com.android.vending (obviously affecting the market)
  • com.android.maps
  • ...old.youtube
  • something related to search
I've gotten myself into a real mess. I assume if I can get TB working again and become able to download, I could download these apps, but I don't know about the system items I listed above.

What can I do to fix all of this?

I played around with doing the same as you. Figured out after a multitude of tries that Market is the one thing you don't want to move from system to user. I'd also keep Music and Gallery as system apps.

1) Leave Market alone (keep in system)
2) DELETE the other Google apps via TB (Search, YouTube, GMail, Maps, Street View, Reader are safe to remove - they are in Market)
3) INSTALL the deleted items via Market (they will now be user apps)
4) RUN each app (so it can reconnect with your user account)

This is how I currently have things running and have had no issues in weeks.

DarkJedi is right. Titanium backup can sometimes screw up moving things between system and data. Using Root Explorer is probably better. BUT, make a TB backup and CWM backup of the app in it's original state so you can get it back like it was. Titanium restores based on the state of the file at time of backup.

Some apps just CANNOT be moved. Market is definitely one you want as a system app.

I think that most of the others you mentioned like Maps run fine as user apps. Install them from Market, if your TB restore misbehaves. Plus, you get the most up to date version.

i too had some similar problems with tb pro..while trying to convert from system to data or vice versa it would freeze up...forcing me to reboot..after boot ..would go back into tb and the app i was trying to convert would be missing/uninstalled..So long story short i learned the hard way ..to make a backup of the existing app before messing around with trying to convert it

well you could always start over from scratch... (ODIN)... do you have CWM installed?? and if so, did you make a backup after you installed it... cuz if you did then i'd just say restore ur backup...

:thinking:I'm sorry but I don't have any clue what you just said. I knew enough to be dangerous, and I proved myself dangerous. I didn't have any backups and have no idea what ODIN or CWM are.

If you have ClockWorkMod Recovery, you can do a restore, or go over the the Odin thread and you can reflash one of the Odin images that Has CWM already with it. As for your apps, if you have backups for the apps you listed as having been deleted, just restore those.

:thinking:I don't have ClockWorkMod Recovery (never even hard of it), and I can't download anything. I also don't have any backups. So what else can I do?

well the few apps i got rid of were pretty important..like the KEYBOARD..lol..anyway it was such a headache but fortunately i had a backup of my cm7 os with the all mighty CWM..so i was able to restore my phone to an earlier setup..mainly because you cant do much to fix anything if ya dont got tha keyboard:D

sorry, but what is apk's? do you mean apps?

Yes, apk is the extension for the app. Like Windows has .exe extensions. Well Android uses .apk. If you downloaded them outside of the market, you most likely have the apk's. Which means you can easily re-install them. If you installed them through the market, you will have to re download them via the market.

Sure you can, turn on USB debugging and use ADB to give you shell access with your PC

Thank you. I'm truly not dense, just uneducated about this and don't want to mess it up further. You stated to click on either ODIN link- are these the ones? I can use either one? I'm assuming by the titles that the first one has already been rooted (meaning I can delete some of the bloatware) and the other is as it comes out of the box. Correct?

Yep! I'm not sure about the rooted image, but I don't think the image I made has the Odin executable, .ops file, and USB drivers included. The EE14 images have the other files, so download one of those too, just to be sure you have everything :)

Where is the EE14 file? Also, I tried downloading the CWM5 by Chin Checka file and it won't download. Do you know if that link is still correct?

They used to be in the Odin thread, but I guess they're gone now

:thinking:I tried downloading the CWM5 by Chin Checka file and it won't download. Do you know if that link is still correct? I tried again this morning and still nothing.

Also, on the post with the links, it says to hold down the volume, camera, and power buttons at the same time to enable downloading. My phone will not let me hold them all at once. It also says to do that from a powered-off state- how is that possible?
