I'm curious how everyone here is going to react after the "Samsung Moment Experience."

I know that I personally will never buy another Samsung Android... and I may never buy another Samsung phone period since I will be sticking with smart phones from now on... and I just have no faith in Samsung anymore.

Where do you stand?

Edit: Keep in mind, this is NOT a poll asking about whether or not you are going to dump the Moment. It is asking what you expect your preferences to be on your next smartphone purchase.

What I am trying to measure, is the amount of dissatisfaction in the handling of the updates of this phone. Because of how poorly the update was handled, and because of how long it took to get the update, and because of denial of the glitches with this phone, and because of the general unpreparedness upon release. Will your purchasing preferences (as given in the polling options) change when you purchase your next smartphone?

EDIT2: Below is an outline for the fundamental purpose of this poll. Read the questions to get a better idea about what I am trying to measure. Then decide where you stand.

*How long have you had your Moment handset?
*What has your experience been like in getting the update or dealing with Samsung?
*Do you believe that 3+ months is an appropriate waiting time before making the very first software patch available to the market as a whole?
*If yes, then where do you stand on the issue of other manufactures introducing their first software patches by the end of the month, or even a couple weeks after release?
*What is your opinion about Samsung's disclosure about the intended updates? Is the fact that they wouldn't even release any information about the CL14 update for months on end acceptable?
*Most of Samsung Moment owners want to get the 2.1 upgrade sooner or later, but WE ALL wanted to get the battery patched ASAP. Do you believe that Samsung dragging their heels to fix a key issue with the phone is a completely acceptable business practice that should romance consumers into sticking around?
*Should Samsung Moment owners completely ignore those issues and continue to purchase from a deadbeat (IMO) manufacturer? Or should they make their next purchase from another company?

im still unsure as to how i feel. Having come from a BB Curve i have to say the BB wasnt very "smart" at all. When i got my first android it was a HTC Hero. It was very problematic and got exchanged for another. The second Hero on the family plan started to experience similar problems like not ringing and going directly to voice mail so we opted out within the first 30 days and got Moments. So I guess you can say im on my second android format. Ill give it some time, wait for the rumored 2.1 update and then make a call. It just seems that once most everyone is using the same OS it will be easier to sort out the bugs. Remember how many patches XP has when it first came out!

I've always loved Samsung products. I really have no complaints about my Moment now that the battery gauge has been fixed. The camera is kinda junky, but no complaints really. I just hope they make a PowerMat for it, that micro USB port is a PITA to plug in under dim light (at night when wife is already in bed)
Yeah. Now that they finally fixed the crippling battery issue I am ok with it also. But it took them 3 months to do it (nearly 4 months if you start counting from the release date)!

I loved my previous Samsung phone, but it didn't have glitches and it wasn't a smartphone. Overall their support for this phone has been absolutely pathetic IMO. The hardware is great, but I feel abandoned by the Samsung company. I have lost all trust in them, and quite frankly, I'm terrified of the glitches that will arise from the 2.1 update. Not only that, but especially the amount of time it will take them to repair those 2.1 glitches.:(

this was my first experience with a samsung phone and I was disappointed. I loved the Android experience automatically despite it being 1.5 instead of 1.6. after researching on different forums and here, it seems like samsung android phones in general are rather buggy. plus my fustration with the implementation of the cl14 update and the general lack of caring about if we got it or not has soured me. don't know wether to blame samsung or sprint for this, but it seems like every other android phone that had bugs, recieved hassle free patches
in conclusion... samsung can suck it.

I feel kind of let down by Google actually. I know the Moment is just running 1.5 but the Android OS just kind of lacked those cool features that a more mature phone OS has. I picked the Moment because I knew it was pretty well packed in hardware specs. And I knew that I'd have to wait for the OS to catch up and bring something to make iPhone owners feel left out. I don't know, I can't really blame Samsung for making good hardware. I have high hopes for Android OS - it just the waiting for development that sucks.

I will have to see a major performance upgrade in this device before I play with samsung or any android again. Had the g1 girl has the cliq both were impressionable but shid right here? Oh my God! Somebody needs either a slap or a kick! My moment just started acting crazy but 2.1 better be good or I might pay the 200 for out of contract and let verizon get my money on the new palm! I got this for the keyboard and android but I'm kinda unsatisfied.

Wow... This is amazing... Obviously everyone in the negative opinion has never dealt with a smartphone before.

A few examples:

The BlackBerry 9530 - Storm - couldn't even make a freakin call out of the box! Day of activation, they were having issues getting the activation call made from the phone! That and forget battery life - it went about an hour before kicking the bucket - and that was with not being able to make calls.

The Palm Pre - finally getting a few NEEDED updates? I think that is enough said there.

The Iphone just got MMS and video (it did get video right?) and 1.5 is lagging behind?

Windows Mobile 6.5 has more flaws than you can shake a stick and and has to be skinned to be usable? And we are complaining about what? We're not using an OS that was only released a month ago?

Seriously, people! The carriers need to test software (especially CDMA carriers - VZW and Sprint specifically) and that takes a minimum of 4-6 weeks. If they had done the testing in October to go from the mild update from 1.5 to 1.6 (which I believe Android called a maintenance update) we wouldn't be looking at a new OS ever.

2.0 came in December and 2.1 came in January... Give it 2-4 weeks to plug in the Navigator, SprintTV and the other bloatware - then 4-6 weeks of testing, we're looking at a solid Q2 release date. This is simple development time.

If you are that unhappy, head over to SDK and root your moment and flash to 2.1 early and run the risks associated with untested software. If not, enjoy the Moment for what it is - a speedy Android running phone with a few glitches - not unlike any other device out there right now.

You completely missed the point guy...

1. And how long did it take for them to come out with a patch? You're saying that it took blackberry 3-4 MONTHS to patch the phone? No? yeah, the answer is no.

2. Enough said? I do not know what you are saying? It's hardware is garbage. The OS works very well as far as I know. What did they have to fix and how long did it take them to fix it?

3. That is a hardware issue. You can't update hardware through some sort of OTA patch. You know what your hardware is when you buy it. You're comparing apples to oran... actually more like apples to spare tires. Quite a reach.

4. Finally a worthy comparison. Now you have to actually confront the comparison... How long did it take for WinMo 6.5 to release its first patch? Was it 3-4 months? If not, then you have only served to further prove Samsung's abandonment of The Moment.

Anyways, the key thing here (the entire point that you have missed) is that this poll has nothing to do with the Moment having glitches. Thanks for the input, but it's irrelevant. All smartphones have glitches, we all recognize that, we know that we are not going to get away from that.

Now that we are on the same page. This poll has to do with how Samsung has handled these glitches. 3-4 months is ridiculous. Complete denial of software issues, and 3-4 months for its first basic patch... How many dozens of smartphones have been on the market? I challenge you to find 3 others that have had as bad or worse manufacturer attention than the Moment. And if you can find them, then great, you have only confirmed that the Moment is barely above the bottom 1 percentile.

I like my Moment phone. It works pretty well now, but not on November 1st, or December 1st, or January 1st, or February 1st... I'm not going to ditch this phone, I'm not going to go somewhere else. But when I am eligible for an upgrade, I am going with another manufacturer that has a track history of servicing their phones. Of course the next smartphone I get will have issues... but if I go with the correct manufacturer then those issues will be dealt with, not denied.

I'm a long time smartphone user and even longer time PDA user, so I think my expectations are realistic. I'm not ready to throw Samsung under the bus yet, but I am disappointed. My main complaint still comes from the cl14 fix that sent everyone searching for a competent repair center. I expect my smartphone "experience" to move forward and that was huge step backwards that should never have happened. It left a bitter taste. Though I'm of the opinion that you buy a device for what it can do now, not tomorrow, because of cl14 I find myself holding off judgment on this phone and Samsung till 2.1. I'm not upset about the phone being released with 1.5, but the overall performance of the phone does not match up to its h/w spec which leads me to suspect that Samsung did a poor job with the drivers. In my mind, 2.1 has to be a home run or I'm in the never buy Samsung again camp. I'm already at the point where if asked I will not recommend this phone.

I don't think anyone can point fingers solely at Samgsung. We don't know what kind of penalties Samsung may have been subject to if they didn't deliver the phone to Sprint on the date in the contract. When it come to updating the phone, that also may be entirely up to Sprint. They're the ones in control of how the update gets to the phone.

As far as whether or not I'll get another Samsung phone, I've already told my Sprint rep (actually an agent that doesn't work for Sprint) to mark me down for one of those Moments that do DTV when they come out.

Except it's the same Sprint that has no problem updateing the Pre OTA and has been providing d/l updates for WM for years. AFAIK, all the other Android phones have been updated via a downloadable file or OTA. The only smartphone that could only be legitimately updated by bringing it "back to the shop" in recent memory is the Moment. Whether or not Sprint put pressure on Samsung is debatable, what is obvious is that Samsung released this phone with no update path or plan in place. That would be unacceptable from a small cell phone mfg, much less one of the largest.

I don't understand this statement. Sprint controls the update. You don't get it from Samsung. There's already been plenty written on Sprints unwillingness to do OTA updates, instead requiring users to bring phones into service centers, supposedly because Sprint doesn't want the huge amount of bandwidth being used when everyone gets the updates at the same time. But Sprint's official answer is that during updates the users of the phones won't be able to use their phones during the update. Give me a break. There is no love lost between me and Sprint but I'm motivated to use them. My agent gets me fantastic deals on plans and handsets. I'm responsible for about 70 Nextels where I work.

It's not Samsung per-se in this case. It's the whole technology market. If you work anywhere that creates technology products, you'll know. The business drives development to release garbage, day in, day out.

The way things are done now, I'm actually quite pleased with the Moment...even though I had to root it to get the battery life to last a full day. Crazy to say? Yes, but it's exactly what I'd expected before I got the phone.

Now the Samsung Instinct...the original...that was a total dog. So closed source that there was no way to even fix it. I dumped that in about a month.

Wife wants a Moment...going to likely recommend against it as she doesn't have the patience and tolerance to learn all the ins and outs, or to understand why something is causing issues. I think she'll be better off with my old Blackberry at this point.

Do realize that if it weren't for the open source nature of Android, that the 'fixes' wouldn't even be possible. This project is a case in point in favor of open source. Samsung may not openly support rooting their phones, and for support reasons I totally get that, but with a wink and a nod, it is possible at least.

How were WinMo issues hardware related? I came to this from a WinMo phone and when it came down to it the software was the problem. There was no market where you could load your phone with 100 apps, for free, that would enhance your phone and make it more useful, the OS sucked at multi-tasking, and just like Windows 98 by the time I got the OS optimized, all my apps in order and the phone working perfectly something would screw up that required a master reset. The only thing I miss about that OS is that editing the registry made that phone easy as hell to customize.

As for Samsung patching the battery/gps issues. Yeah it took a couple months but it wasn't a severe usability issue, I still easily got an entire day out of my phone. You're talking about going to HTC instead, a company that took the same amount of time to patch an issue where sending a text message meant you had a dead phone within hours. Personally, I'd rather have to navigate a real map in google maps than pull my phone out of my pocket after a movie and find out that telling someone 'ttyl' during previews killed my battery.

Will I get another Samsung? Why not, they've patched the major issues and to be honest, if they never release Android 2.1 I'd probably still be perfectly content since that's exactly what Motorola and Microsoft did to us Q users so it would be of no surprise to me.

I can't even name a single feature of 2.1 that I care about since my phone does everything I need it to. I can call, text, not only receive but SEND MMS with no issues, play games, navigate, browse the net, check email, watch movies, browse youtube, listen to music, find north, dyno my car, level tables and such, comparison shop online by just scanning a barcode, take photos and videos, view edit and create word and excel documents, graphing calculator, identify songs by letting the phone listen, check my bank account, facebook tells me what is going on every time I check my phone, and when I'm on a date I can open an application during dinner and find out what is going on near us to do next. I could do MAYBE 1/4 of that with free apps on WinMo. The only program I had to pay for in that list was Docs To Go.

At the time I got the Moment my wife was using a Motorola Q and at the time she loved it. But after she saw what mine would do she had to have one. She's very technologically challenged but she says the Moment is the best phone she's ever had. But then, her phone is one of the few that has never exhibited any of the problems people are reporting, even with battery life.

Who said WinMo issues they were hardware related?
Who was talking about going to specifically HTC instead?

With all of this miscommunication I am feeling like I didn't address this clearly in the OP. This poll isn't relating to whether or not the Moment is a good phone. I love this phone. I agree that it generally does what it is supposed to do and it does it well (once the battery and agps issues were fixed). This isn't a poll directed at whether or not people hate this phone or would ditch this phone or anything to do with the specific capabilities or glitches of this phone.

In the most basic sense, do you feel that Samsung has burned you?
