Root Desire ROM is going to be awesome!

The reason why I say "going to be" is because the current ROM that is out there has some bugs that keeps it from being my daily driver. The voice search is currently broken, the camera is limited to 3MP and the flash isn't functioning. That being said... everything else is awesome. I can't wait till we get a more finalized version of the ROM. :D

i'm running the desire remix 1.1 and the cam has flash, the voice search works, and the the blue tooth works. the only thing still messed up is the time stamping on the text messaging, and the camera still maxes out at 3mp. but realistically it's a perfectly usable rom. it isn't the *********** that everyone makes it out to be, saying it's unusable till it gets these things fixed. if people do regular updates to the rom, these issues will be fixed in no time at all, and the problems that are plaguing the rom really aren't dealbreakers. i'd advise anyone intrigued by it to give it a spin. i did, and honestly, for several reasons, i don't see myself throwing cyanogen or modacos rom on there, no matter how good of a track record it has. desire simply has too much potential and is way easier to use and is much better looking than the crappy stock looking os, where my only option is sweeter home or home++.

someone linked me to it in a thread here... i'll look for it and link you to it. i'm getting rid of it, the things they fixed aren't worth the things they broke/didn't fix. the lock button(top button) no longer locks the phone, and the text message date stamp is STILL screwed up. i love sense for its clean ui, but i'm aftraid i'll just have to wait till it goes to a stable beta or even comes out of beta.

this is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=637325

pretty sure i had to follow a couple links off of that link to get it., FYI

I'm getting my N1 today and am dropping this on ASAP - what directions did you use for your walk through?

Thanks
start here for details on the ROM. at the very bottom of the thread page is a within-the-thread-search-box that i recommend you use to find some answers to your questions. i'm using the ROM as well, but my experience with Alpha 17 has been mixed. i'm still using though because of the Exchange integration, the Sense UI and my challenges are not show-stoppers. i encourage you to read/research about this and other ROMs before flashing. if you're new to Android (like me) patience will serve you well here. :)

I just installed it... playing with it now... getting my stuff all restored... will report back later... I like the look of it for sure, and it's actually quite snappy... typing seems like laggy with this full ROM rather than just the htc_ime keyboard on the stock ROM...

I had gotten the APN backup (from ?) and the App backup (from CurveFish) from the Market before rooting and wiping.... so now, while still taking time, makes restore my settings and apps a breeze...

PS - just setup my Outlook for work... MUCH better outlook/exchange configuration... Calendar is included... that alone makes it worth it!
i apologize for my untimely response (forgot to enable email notifications). one of the other things i like is the ability to view emails in conversation/thread mode. access to all folders is nice, however, i don't think email notifications will fire if you have rules that push emails to custom folders. the exchange calendar access/features is big for me as well (albeit the calendar i somewhat bland looking). i'm embarrassed to say that i'd be a lost without my calendar. my wife/kids take full advantage of this by firing off a bunch of calendar invites for honey-do's, get-money-from-dad reminders, etc. conversely, i take full advantage as well using the decline request feature, lol.

it would be nice if the Desire ROM allowed you to add more than one Exchange account. the only workaround i'm aware of is to push Email.apk (from the stock Android build) and MotoCal.apk (Calendar app from the VZW Droid) to my device, and also install CalWidget from the market. i use CalWidget to view the the combined calendars on one of my home screens.

The built-in Exchange Calendar sync ability is awesome!!! Worth its weight in gold!! That was the one big missing item in the stock Nexus ROM... Glad HTC found a way to integrate it - great for us that sync up Outlook on our handhelds... Was able to have both Calendar and Email syncing on my iphone, but then when I got the Nexus, the Calendar part went missing... glad to have it back! :D

My biggest question regarding the calendar app is:

When an Exchange Calendar Event comes in, can you select and drill into the event to see it listed on your calendar FROM the invite prior to accepting it?

Thx!

you know I was leary about the whole Sense UI/Desire ROM thing... but Paul at MoDaCo has done an amazing job with the "Kitchen" as it allows great customization and the ability to re-include some of the stock Nexus ROM features into the Desire ROM...

I like the 7 home screens on the Desire ROM, as well as the app drawer/phone/widget add bar at the bottom... the home screen layout tool is super cool too - let's you go from one screen to another very quickly even if one is at one end and the one you want is at the other end... it's kinda like Expos
