no "update-all" function for apps?

you could download atrackdog. it doesn't update exactly all at once, it brings you to the install screen for each app. it's a step closer to what you want.

Isn't that exactly what the "Market" does as well (in it's "Downloads" tab)?

Ok, aTrackDog also covers apps not installed via Market, but the few I have, don't provide an install link/screen either...

I can't understand why they wouldn't include an update-all. Google had a brain fart.

This is how Google is in general. They leave out a lot of essential functions and options on most of their products. I do love a lot of their products, and I love the Nexus one, but there is a lot of small things missing. It always seems like they spend years on a small detail when they have essentially unlimited resources.

Sorry but while it may seem a good idea, I would actually like to suggest to you all that an "update all" for apps would be a bad idea.

This is because you may not want to install updates for all apps at the time of them being available. One update may remove/change some functionality that you like & therefore, would like to keep the existing version.

Also, more critically, if one particular apps update caused instability, how would you spot which one has caused the issue. Better to install one at a time to make sure that no bugs were introduced.

It's NEVER a bad idea. Some of us want it. If there are bugs on an update, well you are going to get the same bug installed as you go app by app and install the update. Makes no difference then.

The iPhone does allow an update all or each app at a time. There is never a bad idea when you give the customer a choice. I want my choice.

OK, I agree with you on having the choice to do either.....but you would find it more difficult to troubleshoot which update out of 10 has caused the problem, that going through one by one.

I have had a couple of issues with apps downloaded that then cause some functionality of the phone to break. My experience I am afraid, having used Android for some 6 months now.

It's always possible but unless you reboot or start restarting some services, you really aren't going to notice a difference on troubleshooting. I know when I see a few updates I update each one as fast as I can touch through it. I am just think about the average Joe. I think most people who have a Nexus one aren't that average Joe, but once you talk about the Droid, or the Cliq, you are talking about the average Joe who don't understand how this stuff all works. But then again, that's another topic.

She has an iPhone 3G now but I would like her to move over towards Google services and she kind of likes how much faster my phone is. The iPhone 3G is so slow, even the 3GS was pretty slow, which is what I had. But she still wants to keep it for games, which is what I am missing but I give Android time to really get into gaming. It just needs to be pushed more into main stream.




BTW, I do agree with you about the troubleshooting. I am new to Android and I hope they do have some tight controls on making sure apps don't crash phones. I'm sure we can handle it, but I know like my wife, she can't. Her iPhone already crashed and we had to do a restore and she was pretty upset by that.

There's a feature request open. Sign in with your Google Account and star it to lend your voice.

Careful with "me too" posts there even though the entire board consists of them, (i.e. "I think it's a good idea", "I think we need this, too"). I posted something similar and apparently everyone who has starred the issue receives an e-mail with your post. Your only supposed to post if you have a proposed solution or can elaborate on the issue, I posted something like "this is definitely a necessity!" I don't quite remember but I got an e-mail from people saying that I don't know how to use the forum and that because of people like me they are un-starring the issue (or "removing their voice").

And apparently Google looks for the amount of stars to decide if its important enough to address.

Oh well :cool:
