I think this is the right subforum for this.
I have an Xperia Play, Android 2.3.4

And i always have this low on space notification, and its even got to the point where applications will not longer update because they say that there is insufficient space. However the phone reports available internal storage of 36mb, which is more than enough for these little apps. Is there something I can do to fix this?

Unfortunately you can not alter this particular setting. As a side not, that is fairly small amount of internal phone memory. For example I have more applications installed on my handset than I could need and have about 50MB free. Do you have a large number of additional applications installed on the handset at all?

Yupp, 36 mbs is too low.
Android by default needs about 10% of total app space free.
Have you moved any apps to sd?
When's the last time you cleared app caches?

I don't know whats taking up all my space, i only have 7 apps installed on internal memory that are free to be moved to the sd card, altogether these apps take up maybe 30mb. All the others are either on the sd card or cannot be moved.

To clean the app caches is there an easy way, or do i have to do each one individually? I only got the phone maybe a month or two ago, would they get full that quickly?

Unfortunately, yes it is very easy to fill up your phone that quickly.
One easy way to help free up some space is to download terminal emulator, and type in the following (minus quotation marks, and caps do matter)
"pm setInstallLocation 2"
reboot your phone, and you should be able to move a few more apps to sd.
To early clean cache files, I use App 2 SD (creator is named Sam Lu, should be first app in the market search)

There is a certain account of bloat installed on the phone which can only removed by rooting and installing a third party app.
