To late to droid?

The Droid has been out for close to 4 months now, from what I've seen it's a great phone. But the way android phones are flying out now, would it be a bad idea for me lock my self in with the droid for 2 years at this point considering its age? The fact that is only 50 bucks is tempting but also makes me feel like I'm buying old tech.

All phones are obsolete the moment they're released as something better is always a couple of months away. If you are always waiting for that next best thing... you'll always be waiting.

I'm quite happy with my Droid at $199. It's a stellar device at $49 on contract.

I got mine in early December, and I can easily see myself keeping it for a couple of years. I know that 2.1 and potential future updates will only make the device faster and it can be easily overclocked.

No, not really. It's not too late. If you want you can do what my friend did--opt for a 1-year contract.

But in all seriousness, you are right. If I personally were looking to get a new phone at this current time and I did NOT have the droid yet and was looking to get an android phone on verizon, I would for sure look at the incredible or nexus one. The nexus one is coming out March 23rd. But if you got the droid you would NOT be disappointed, I'll tell you that much. Amazing phone! Loveee it! But at this time in technology.. maybe think about waiting a month and see what you think about the droid vs nexus one vs incredible....

NEVER too late to droid. the nexus is nice and all, but still not the same. if you like it, take the plunge. 2 years is nothing!

As for my advice to the OP? You cant go wrong with a Droid or an N1. The two are both so good it's a matter of preference.

I don't know, I'm not planning on buying another phone for awhile so I haven't been looking. But the HTC Desire is suppose to be good and also the new SONY android phone might be cool.

Unless a physical keyboard is important, the N1 should be a real consideration for you...I haven't been bothering to track what other Androids may be coming to Verizon in the near future.

You do have to be careful about the waiting game...you can end up 6 months down the line and still won't have made a decision...

Well think about it this way.. even though I bought the droid when it was the latest and greatest knowing what I know now I would still buy it even if it wasn't the latest but it was the best price. Its like going to an outlet mall and paying 50% for last years styles

I would still go for the Motorola product. HTC has nice software, but their phones don't last much longer than a year. Every Motorola phone I've had worked until the day it was replaced. I know Motorola might not have Sense UI and the Droid doesn't have Blur, but in my eyes, that can all be overlooked by the fact that the Droid is a rock solid piece of hardware. For a comparison, the glass on the Droid is made of this stuff...

I personally think the X10 will be a big bucket of fail unless they get android 2.0 on there, and even then the rumours had it priced at like $800. The Desire looks nice but its in the same class as the Droid and N1. I'm not sure about the Incredible but I gather it will be in the same boat. Plus, the incredible is fugly.

Droid was underclocked and overbuilt. It's a balls-out device for the money, and nowhere near being obsolete. Root gives ya all the bling.

I still cant belive this phone can be had for $50. Escpecially since its still going for $199 at verizon stores. I decided to give verizon a shot and bought one from Amazon for $49.99 Friday. Cant wait to give it a run though! Just to follow up on what others have already said here. All phones that come out are basically obsolete the day they come out. BTW for anyone, what is N1?

Nexus One, aka the "Google Phone." Built by HTC based on Google's specifications, currently GSM-only--3G enabled for T-Mobile, but rumored to release in its CDMA-variant on March 23 for the Verizon Network.
