So im running SmokedGlass 4.5 and i've been having some problems that i was wondering if anyone has had or knows a fix for etc...

So im overclocking and it seems kind of stable at 800 but as soon as i bump it up to 1000 i have some problems with force close and it seems kinda buggy. anyone else have this problem or knwo anything about it?

it also will glitch out like crazy sometimes if im just on the homescreen where the notification bar will just bug out and start going up and down and the lancher will open and i will scroll thru and it will just go up and down and select random apps.
weird things like this?
I havent read anyone else having these problems tho.

Yeah, your phone doesn't like 1GHz :) My phone runs great on 1.2GHz but is laggy then will force close or reboot randomly when running 1.1 GHz

Try a different kernel and you may run perfectly fine on 1.1 or 1.2.....or even 1.3. Different freq's can have different effects on different phones.

Did you use a backup program like titanium to restore data... or apps?. Also I'm assuming you did a clean wipe when you restored using Nandroid... correct?

You didnt say if you've been running 4.5 for a while and everything was great.... or all the sudden things went downhill.

No i didnt use any backup. I redownloadedmy apps and just restore my whole phone. So basically wiped it. Ive only been using it for a couple of days not switching speed on off depending on whats the most stable.

Here's my problem. Im still kind of new to rooting and i know many of the basics but this whole changing the kernal for overclocking has me super confused still. i dont know how to change it. Can someone please either give me a step by step on how to change the kernal or pouint me in the right direction that would be great!

It's basically just an update to your running ROM. Below are the instructions. There was a post around here somewhere with a link to all the Kernels minus droidmod... Either way you can get them over at alldroid.com under the dev section. When I find it I'll edit.... unless UBR beats me to it.. which would be much appreciated.

When you flash those kernels, you rename them to update.zip and place them in the root of your SD Card.

Then, using SPRecovery 0.99.2b+:

-Reboot into recovery
-Install
-Allow update.zip installation
-Install /sdcard/update.zip (deprecated)

Okay, here you go...I'll try to make this as clear as I can.

1) Go to AllDroid - View topic - Ultimate Droid V4.0 Bench 140 (02/27/10)

Edit - Note: Even though you may not have Ultimate 4.0 on your phone...all of the current kernels are located there and it was easy for me to find. You will see the same kernels elsewhere but they may be in nandroid format which would require your to do an advanced restore and it just updates the "boot.img"...doesn't erase file or anything but the procedure is different than the one listed here.

2) Find the section that says "Alternate Kernels"

3) Download one or more of these kernels (I say to get them all so you can store them away.

4) Note: These are all in .zip files and have various names...Before you can use any of them you HAVE TO rename them to 'update.zip' Ex. I use the droidmod's kernel and when you download it it is named something like 'droidmodupdater.zip' (or something like that). Copy that .zip file to the root directory on your sd card and then rename to 'update.zip'

5) Boot into recovery (power off and then hold 'x' while you press the power key. You can let go as soon as you see the motorola logo).

6) Go to Install

7) Select 'Allow update.zip Installation' (the screen may flicker quickly but nothing really happens (no confirmation or anything).

8) Select 'Install' and your phone will install the new kernel.

9) Back out of that menu (power key) and select 'Reboot System Now'

10) When your phone boots, go to SetCPU and configure your profiles using your new settings. You may want to play with different kernels and test which one works best for you.

Testing - To test...just use your phone. Having a lot of Forced Closes for apps is not good but random reboots are worse. If you are seeing those, turn your speed down in SetCPU or repeat steps 4-10 above using a different kernel.

Enjoy! :D

Try Droidmod... i've heard it'svvery stable and supports setcpu and wifi tether. If that doesn't give you what your looking for try Chevy's....

If you havent dl'd temp monitor you should... it will let you keep an eye on your cpu temps.... the cooler the better. I think the high operating temp is 141... above that and the failsafe profile in setcpu cuts the frequency down to your minimum set... that assuming you have profile on.

Wow that makes so much sense now! haha
So in a way its like editing the update.zip file and kinda like re-rooting?
Any opinions on what i should use?
Whats worked best for you all?

Not really. The process is the same b/c you're literally updating your ROM to allow it to do something different - but this is not re-rooting your phone all over again. Far from it.

I have tempmonitor and use it to keep an eye out. Isnt DroidMod a ROM? or is it also a overclock kernal? Can i just use the DroidMod ROM and it will be all in one?

DroidMod is a ROM. I don't know for a fact if it includes an OC kernel or not, but all the info you need is at droidmod.org. I haven't used DroidMod at all, as I prefer SG / Ultimate / ADC as my 3 go to ROMs.
