This corroborates some earlier rumors, and comes despite speculation that 2.1 simply wouldn’t fit on older hardware like T-mobile’s G1 handset.The rumor is being reported by Taylor Wimberly of Android and Me, who cites “inside sources familiar with the matter.” Wimberly also notes that not all of the features of the Nexus One will make it to the older phones, such as Live Wallpaper, and that certain handsets may require a clean data wipe before installing 2.1 via PC interface (a departure from previous over-the-air updates that AndroidAndroid users have enjoyed)......"

I dont see the cliq or BH2 getting 2.1 I think we are stuck where we are. I have 3 days left on my trial and I will be sending my BH2 back for sure/.

Obviously this was a post to draw traffic to their site (it worked! every blog linked to it), and is totally false. Well of course it could come out and be true, but there still is no source to this rumor.

The only differences between Android phones are , processing power and manufacturer customization. All Android phones can run what ever CORE android updates the are added to the code tree minus customizations , that depend on *cpu* power . This has been proven so many times with grandaddy G1 ,yet still so many idiots out there ,who still don't understand how Android works , still choose to spread the propaganda that * cupcake or doughnut or eclair is to big * yet grandaddy G1 can do them all. here's something for them to chew on , behold2 with touchWiz Rom is @ 102mb , does this mean 1.5 can't fit on the G1 ?
Reading and understanding go hand in hand ........

The only differences between Android phones are , processing power and manufacturer customization. All Android phones can run what ever CORE android updates the are added to the code tree minus customizations , that depend on *cpu* power . I think the bigger problem was that Google or HTC stated 1.6 would be the last update the phone would get. This was well before they finished 2.1 though and they might of changed there minds. Still we haven't heard any official word about the G1 getting any update so to say it will well then your just jumping the gun.

I mean it's not their responsibility to upgrade the phones, they merely make the OS. After they make the OS I'm sure there is a fair amount of development time, energy and money that goes into getting each handset to work with 2.1. ...And of course that would be the responsibility of the phone manufacturers. After that it would be in the hands of the phone companies to distribute said update.

I mean there are just way too many variables out there for google to make such a guarantee.

Google can make it a guarantee because they built the OS and they can do it again updating and everything. It doesn't need to be OTA for us to receive it all they need to do is make it available on the net. Google developers work with every phone to get it upgraded to the current.

Actually no. Google updates the source code and that is as far as google goes into helping anyone getting 2.1 onto every phone. It's up to the manufacture to port all the code they developed from the previous version (touchwiz and the cube and other things) to the new 2.1 OS. I don't think Google has any stipulation about forcing phone manufactures to update to the new os so if Samsung doesn't want to put the money into upgrading the device to 2.1 then they don't have to.

In all seriousness, relax. the phone will be updated it. its stupid to even think for a second that it wont. You seriously think the BH2 wont get an update while the old ass G1 phones are still receiving 1.6?

The gaosp project is hosted on google's site, but has no relation with people from google.

And I'm sure we'll be getting that 2.1 with TW that was shown at MWC, it probably isn't ready to be distributed yet. Showing it running on 1 phone (who knows if anything worked) is much easier then sending out a final release.

As already mentioned Google has no hand in GAOSP - the project is only hosted on a website provided by them, but the site is run by the community. This is just like having a GMail account - it doesn't mean that Google endorses or writes your email, you just get to use it and store your messages there.

Samsung is a "middle man" in a sense, but they cannot be just cut out that easily. The BH2 relies on proprietary software to operate, so unless some one reverse engineers it (which the community is trying to do) Samsung must be involved.

Of course software upgrades cost money - code does not write its self! It costs in time not spent on other projects that do make money, and it costs in wages paid to the programmers. In fact, the largest organizations in open source (Canonical, Novel, Sun [RIP], IBM, Red Hat, Google, etc - and many of the smaller ones) are for-profit businesses. Just because you may be able to get it "for free" doesn't mean money wasn't spent to make it.

Additionally, Android is only open source in the way that "anyone can use and change it for themselves", not that "everyone can contribute to official development". Android is made solely at Google's expense. It is only after they are done with a release that they give us access to the source code.

I see no reason to think the BH2 won't be officially getting 2.1 eventually. We've been hearing this from various sources for a few months, but we are letting the delays and anticipation get to us.

As for 2.1 reaching the other phones - technically it should be possible to create a "slim" release without the power hungry addons and extra applications. The issue is whether or not the OEM's will publish the update. Personally I'm taking the news no further than that Google has internally demonstrated a build of 2.1 on low spec devices and is trying to convince the manufacturers to use it. Regardless, the final decision is still in the hands of companies who are may be more concerned about next year's device line up than last year's.
