Bluetooth PAN or dial up networking ?

Just got my htc hero 2 days ago.

My main goal was to swap my Sony Ericsson Z710i to get HSPA (3G+) speed instead of EDGE as a Bluetooth modem for my laptop running XP (SP2).

From what I've read so far, I'm out of luck concerning Bluetooth services. (dial up & serial ports). :(

Will the next release of Android handle those services ?
Has anyone tried it ?

I must add that so far no Linux OS is handling this O.K. (Latest Buntu, or Puppy Linux).

In the mean time, I'll try it out with my old G4 Mac OSX...

Why are you so worried about a Bluetooth modem? The Hero will make a 3G+ USB modem instead using the existing USB cable, assuming you are using a Windows laptop. If you have the Sprint Hero in the USA you will need an app from the market.

If you have a European Hero it comes as standard. Just install HTCSync on your laptop then plug in the USB cable. then menu > settings > wireless controls > mobile network sharing and you are away. It is all in the manual.

Hi ! Tnx for reply, first, I can't install HTC sync on my 10 years old Presario, I think it's because it lacks USB2, so I had to install XP (SP2) on my desktop. :(

I followed all above steps, but it doesn't work either.
Could be I need XP (SP3) ?
The network icon in the taskbar tries to connect to the web in vain and gives up.

A USB cable modem connection will be fine until Bluetooth handling improves.

I'm confident Android (Google) will turn out to become a great performing platform, just like Mac OSX also Linux "Free BSD" based.
They have the means (developers & $$$) to tame that "penguin", and make it intuitive and easy to use in the future.
There's no way Android could compete with M$ or Symbian if their top notch smartphone can't do all that of an half priced older dumbphone, so I trust that they'll fix this up (soon ?)...

I really like my hero, cant wait for a 2.1 upgrade.

Although I ahve not used Bluetooth PAN on Android yet, I can assure you that Bluetooth PAN is infact easy to setup on Fedora 12. I use Bluettoth PAN on my N95 and I was using it on my HTC Kaiser (again not in Android), so Linux does in fact have Bluetooth PAN support that is not that hard to setup.
