Maybe it's just the fact that I've been doing it longer than many of you. Or, the fact that I've taken these ROMs apart and compared them while they're sitting there in pieces. I dunno... But jeez! All of these "new custom ROMs" are all the same crap repackaged and renamed over & over & over again. Aren't you getting sick of it???

I guess I should've got into the ROM-making ("packaging" is really the word I should use) business two months ago. Post a "new" ROM every couple of days, tag it with a new version number, post my DONATE link, and sit back and laugh. Oy freakin' Vey!

I agree with ya Joe. I haven't bothered to update from Beast 7.8, I have it themed just the way I like it and have all my tweaks applied. When something comes along that really makes it worth upgrading then I will. You know how much $ some of these guys made? Droidmod/Sholes made over 20K, Pete has gotten over a grand also.

Hey Joe, let's team up and make some ROM's! Papa needs some new shoes.......

People are like this with cars too, or were before the economy crapped out.

I mean, why would you pay for a Lincoln truck? It's an F150 with fancy logos and a higher price tag? The Cadilac is worse - it's a Chevy (or GMC? Difference being that the GMC is a little tougher, usually).

I rooted & went to Pete's BBeast .75. I upgraded to .76, then went on a short vacation. I watched, and decided 1.x would probably be worth upgrading to, so I did, then backed that up & put BB 2.1 v.5 on. Seems ok with Chevy's kernel, so I'm sitting there.

Because I like the overall work that Pete did, I donated $5. I think it's worth that. I doubt I'll donate again unless something phenomenal happens.

The real worry, to me, with custom roms, is when the developers get tired of it. Then no more updates. :( I'd hate to have to back stock in a year b/c all the devs got new phones.

Glad to seed some of my peeps are with me on this. And no offense to Pete, but all he has done from the beginning is "assemble" ROMs. *yawn* He sure ain't the one doing any ground-breaking coding. Tasmanian_Droid is the only one I saw doing anything earth-shattering. Without him, we'd all still be running at 550 or 600. Meanwhile, all the other schmucks get all the accolades (and ca$h). Well ... I should not say "the only one". Sir PsychoS Recovery console is awesome as well. And whomever de-odex'ed all the system apps deserves praise.

OK, I think I'm done now. I might just go back to stock today and see if it actually out-performs all of these "custom" ROMs. :D :D :D

At this point, I have to agree with you also, Joe.

I have been running Sholes 2.0.6 for some time now for this exact reason. By the time Droidmod 1.0 came out, I already had live wallpapers, and 'Morphed in the themes I liked, so there was absolutely no reason to switch. My Droid runs stable, smooth and quick.

I have not seen anything out there to make it worth all the hassle to redo all my themes and tweaks, yet there is a new "release" almost every day- same ROMS, just whatever combo of kernel/apps/tweaks/themes they decide to throw in at the moment. In reality, I can do these types of thing to my current ROM on my own if I choose.

The 2.1 ROMS:rolleyes:,,,,nope. There isn't a single one out there that will function properly without the correct kernel(correct me if I am wrong), so there is nothing there that interests me at all right now. No matter what, I want my Droid to at least have the same functionality as it did when it was "stock".

Once in a while I will apply the latest rave tweak or modify my theme a bit, but thats it. I appreciate all the work the devs have done to this point, as my Droid performs quite a bit better than before, and I finally have it customized to MY liking, but it will take a major jump to make me switch to a new ROM.

I completely agree. I sat at 2.0.6 (sholes) for a while and have just recently went to 1.0. That was only because I was changing my theme and just decided to go ahead and update. I look at all the ROMs out there and really don't see any difference in any of them. The only one that I can see making a true difference is the PASSION ROM. Until then I think I am sticking with DM 1.0.

I realize the current Holy Grail in Droidland is finding that perfect combination of already existing elements, but for me I do enjoy trying what is out there, comparing my results to the results of the masses, knowing well that chances are I will go back to my preferred setup (in the words of Dorothy, "There's no place like home.") Occasionally I find something that is a keeper as far as some new ringtone or background that I stumble upon or twink. I thrive on rectifying the occasional crisis and do look forward to the next real inovation (flash? voice commands over bluetooth?).

I can't speak to a lot of the ROM makers out there, but I think Pete deserves a lot of credit.

He recognized that one issue was that ROMs were often too bleeding edge for the broader community to feel comfortable using them on a day-to-day basis. Pete recognized an opportunity and created his "Bugless" line of products to fill that niche - "safe" ROMs that still provided a collection of cool goodies that rooters (current and potential) were interested in. He hasn't held to that path 100% of the time (he had some mis-cues along the way with too aggressive ROMs and had to make corrections), but overall his success is a result of executing consistently on a smart strategy. Reminds me of Southwest airlines...

Pete's never claimed to be a trail-blazing innovator, but he has created a product that has clearly attracted a large share of the market. Kudos to him.

Disclaimer: I've been using BB ROMs for a while now...currently holding on BB 7.9 - fast, stable, and has the 2.1 features I want. Haven't found any ROM that beats it (including Pete's newer ones)...

Totally tired of it. They really are all the same. Beast...sholes...etc. Pretty much all the same crap. I'm just trying to find the one that's the least buggy / etc.

Other than that, it'll just be trying Metamorph themes, and waiting for sense to get ported.

Totally agree Joe, I was stuck on a droidmod 1.0 since the day it came out a week or 2 ago, before that just the previous droidmod version. But last night I put a 2.1 rom on and love it, it's just way faster than my other version was. I don't jump around a lot unless I saw something major I didn't have. I was waiting for the official 2.1 to come out, but it's taking too long, so I'll stick with this one for a long time I think.

Pete may not be as skilled in coding as some of the other guys, but his ROM's tend to work the best, besides droidmod/sholes. He is a cool guy and actually responded to my PM's unlike anyone from the sholes team. Besides he never claimed to be a hardcore dev, actually if you remember way back when he first released Bugless Beauty 0.1 he said he is a newbie at all of this. Now he has actually innovated some new apps and fixed some bugs others hadn't.

Oh and don't worry everyone, he has some real nice stuff coming.

I dunno, I tried DroidMod the other day and I just felt like BBeast runs better for me. BBeast 0.7.5, that is. It's less buggy for me than 1.1 or 0.4 were, so I stayed with it.

I'm glad I caught Pete's Bugless Beast 1.1. It's got all the stuff I want (like live wallpapers and news & weather widget) and seems to run perfectly on my Droid. I don't mind the loss of overclock (I moved from BB 0.7.5), since it's smooth-running and I'm not sweating overheat issues. The only time I expect to upgrade ROMs again is when Flash 10.1 is out and part of it. When that happens: stick a fork in me, Baby, I'm DONE :D
