Help Huge upload data ... where is that coming from????

I am using 3G watchdog + APNdroid since a while now.

I am using them in 2 Samsung Galaxy S devices.

Both where great at the beginning. and then awkward data counting where started to happen.

It is always in the Upload (transmitted) data
it shows unbelievable data transmitting (up to 60 mb per day) although I never send anything from my phone (email, youtube upload.... etc)

it takes up my quota very quickly and that is not the only problem ,... actually this is the tiny problem.

The HUGE problem is that even though I reached 99% of the quoted data very quickly and I use APNdroid to turn off the 3G connection.

That data is still counting with the provider,.. even though I never turn the 3G on.

e.g.1 : in my first phone the quota was 120mb/month. for the first two weeks every thing was fine and my total usage was 14mb which is ok. suddenly in one nights it jumped up to 121mb of total usage !!!!!! I checked it immediately with my provider ... it was 115 which is a very acceptable difference.
The APNdroid worked fine by turning off the 3G. but two days later when I checked it with my provider it jumped up to 240 mb !!!!!!!!!

e.g.2 in my second phone (actually my friend's) he started to using the device and the 3G watchdog on Nov 5th (attached is his daily log from 3G watchdog) it seems there is a very high upload activity with 14 mb on average per day sometimes up to near 40mb/day
my friend quota was 250mb/month and the 3G watchdog + APNDroid again did a good job by terminating the connection when it is 99%.
but unfortunately when we checked it with the provider it was 490mb usage !!!! (1 mb extra will cost $0.53) and that is a lot of money.
again one day later (today) it is 502 mb !!!!!

I am really don't know what is happening here and why it is giving different numbers than the provider's ALSO I am not sure where is this upload activities is coming from .

Please help me out here :(

Thanks a lot

I've not heard of this before, but a couple of things:

Make sure your 3g antenna stays turned off for the rest of the billing cycle. I would disable/uninstall apndroid+3g watchdog & just manually turn it off. you can always re-install them next month

Start going through your most recently installed apps for the culprit. Especially look for any apps that have the ability to turn data on, also look for any apps that do a fair bit of uploading, like a backup app or youtube or picasa uploader. Again, just get rid of them until you have some data to start testing with.

Have you started using a voice calling alternative like skype or google voice?

btw, I have 3g watchdog set to turn off my antenna at 75%, this gives me the option to manually turn it back on when I need it if I accidentally use too much near the start of the month. Also, the 3g watchdog guy is currently working on making the data tracking more accurate, but I think it's for the up coming pro version.

Call your mobile carrier back & see if you can convince them to upgrade your data allowance for this month & backdate it to include what's already been downloaded.
Explain your situation where you don't know why this is happening. If you can't convince them, make note of the rep's name & call back again to get a different rep, they might be nicer. Make sure you sweet talk them. There is no use calling them & yelling at them.

good luck & make sure to let us know if you figure out the cause so we can avoid the same issue. Also, if the problem does turn out to be an app, make sure you tell the app maker so they can fix it.

Apart from being rude, this also shows how naive you are. Unlimited data plans are not available everywhere in the world.

it was intended as a suggestion
there is no indication of where the op is from that i noticed.

i read other forums where people want a smartphone, but no data plan, or opt for the cheapest data plan available.
then they get mad when thier phone uses data.

these phone are designed to use data. the provider knows this and is hoping that people go over whatever plan they have.

poeple say "I can use wi-fi" well not always, many places dont have that option.

an unlimited plan is the best option if its available.

before everything

thanks guys.... I never expect that quick respond ... sorry for that :(

I contacted 3G Watchdog developer about the exact problems and that was his reply

[FONT=&quot]First, in cas you may wonder, 3GW does not send (nor receive) any data on the internet mobile connection, it just counts the traffic. It just can't do it because it has not the permission to access the network, it can just view its state (i.e. connected or not). You can check this by going to phone settings > Applications > Manage applications > 3G watchdog > permissions. You'll see that 3GW has the "view network state" permission, but not the "full internet access" required for receiving/sending data.

3GW makes request to APNdroid to turn the mobile data connection off. If your provider is still counting something after that, that means that either the connection is not really off (APNdroid's fault), or there is another kind of connection not intercepted by APNdroid, or your provider is just abusing you - but if 3GW also reports a high outgoing traffic, that must be that something in the phone really sends data.

To know which app sends what, and if you are on Android 2.2, I suggest that you install the "TrafficStats Lite" app (requires 2.2). It will show you the usage for each app.

Good luck.

Best

I will give it a try as the 1st case phone is now on 2.2
but that will be starting the next bill period

It is off on my phone (no 3G signal) but it still counting data (at the provider's computer !!)

I dont think that I am using any apps that are capable of uploading but emails... which I rarely send and never with attachment.

skype is not working for SGS and Google voice is only for USA and I am not in the USA :)

and BTW most of my internet usage is through my home wifi connection... that is at least my 70-80% of my total internet usage on the SGS

I will try to talk to them and see what .. but I cannot be optimistic with them... I already have stories with them actually every one do :)

get unlimited data

I barely convince my self to get the cheapest 120mb/month ... unlimited is about $100/month and that way off my internet budget

Apart from being rude, this also shows how naive you are. Unlimited data plans are not available everywhere in the world.

thank you for your support :)

I felt it is a suggestion in the first place with a little bet of unpleasant sound.

Anyways, guys please don't fight :) ... no harm for anyone :)

anyways, about your suggestion as already mentioned before it is the best available plane.... NO one can say it is not ... BUT it really cost too much... my regular phone bill is less $30-40/month I cannot top it a WHOLE $100 for the internet only that would be a 300% increase in my bill !!

It is like when you say subscribe in every cable/sat channels available and you are only watching sports !!!! .... I hope this is clear with this example :D

im a heavy user, @ 4-10gb a month, its my only option for internet other then dialup, unlimited pays for itself for me @ $30 a month

Hi All
New user and I have the same problem. its my wife's phone. Galaxy S.
She's now had this for 7 months and have had no issues with data and have been within the 500mb limit.

However she was out on Holiday and got back (Phone switched off while away).. and as soon as she got down, within 1 1/2 days she hit 2 Gig data usage and got a warning/disconnection +

Hi Pub

After all I discovered that the problem is the "Whatsapp messenger" app

I even contacted the developers and they admit the issue and that was few months earlier.. they promise to fix it in the next update and I haven't checked since then

there was another app "traffic status lite" which show the data consumption for each app in the device that uses the data

you should give it atry especially if your wife use whatsapp messenger
