Help Wifi tether without root?

I basically just need to sign into Xbox Live so I can play a movie from a flash drive. Is there any WiFi tether app that does not require root?

Easy Tether and Pdanet have been the most popular. I've tried Pdanet and I couldn't get it to work on my TBolt when I had it, but it works well for a lot of people. I also have Easy Tether because it was an Amazon free app of the day, but I haven't tried it. It's $9.99 for the paid version.

The free edition of PdaNet will limit secure web sites. Go to their website for the paid version. It's $15.95.

I don't have this phone but Quick Settings works for me. There is an option for turning on the wi-fi hotspot.

Anyone know if Easy Tether Pro will work on Verizon? It clearly says that that the app is NOT FOR Verizon customers, but it does not say it WILL NOT WORK on a Verizon phone. If someone can confirm it will work I would be happy to pay the 10 bucks...

Do your really want tethering? Perhaps local networking will do, ie. VNC or VPN. Does your XBox have to be on the 'net to play the movie? You should be able to stream media, or use your phone as an RC locally, without going over the 'net.

Also, I'm not sure, but I think PdaNet doesn't try to hide the tethering from the carrier.

I'm probably missing something, but I can't find anything anywhere that says it's not for Verizon customers, either on the Android Market, or Amazon. Can you point me at the statement you're referring to?

I know I read it somewhere, will try and find it. I remember not being able to see it for a while in the market and now it's visible.

Not a big deal. I just couldn't find anything and was just wondering where you saw it.

I'm going to have to break down and try out a couple of the apps to see how they work. I have the unlimited data and hotspot, so after my problem getting PDAnet to work, I just quit trying. I've read that the speeds are slow with some of the tether apps. Has anyone noticed speeds being slower with the apps than the regular network connection and hotspot?

I rooted last week just for the reason of tethering. It's not that I really have a need for it, but it comes in handy at times.

I found a free tether app that seems to work called Barnacle Tether. Might be worth looking at.

Barnacle does require you to be rooted. Were you aware that several of the apps already mentioned allow you to tether without being rooted?

Oh I did know. I just like having the ability to add root only apps without worry. I'm on the fence on trying different ROMs. I ran quite a few different ROMs with my Incredible and got to the point where I was tired of reloading apps. Its nice that I have the option to do roms if I feel the need.

If another OTA takes it away so be it. I wont' loose sleep over it

Isn't the OP asking for WiFi tethering? I think all the above listed options require a USB connection to tthe phone. AFAIK there is no WiFi option without rooting or paying big red their dime. I would be most happy to be corrected though (since I am not to rooted myself...)

I too am looking for a wifi tether without root. This would only be for occasional use while on vacation or to use my wifi only tablet on the road. don't want to have to pay Verizon monthly for something I'm going to use only 2 to 3 times a year. Don't want to root because i don't have time to fiddle with roms and it's easier to just get Verizon updates.

You're right, they all require USB, but I don't know of an unrooted software alternative that doesn't. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong in this, but connecting wirelessly through your phone's internet connection lets it act like a WiFi hotspot, which I think would be more correctly called a mobile hotspot, since it is using your phone's internet connection to tether wirelessly and that is through your phone's 3G, or 4G network. This requires you to use your carrier's mobile hotspot plan which you pay for. I believe you can also tether using bluetooth on some phones, but as far as I know, the Rezound does not have the correct bluetooth profile built in. I think the carriers are pretty much locking this option down, but may possibly be available in the future, if not already, on a rom if you're rooted. Some people can't wait to tether and love to constantly tinker with their phones and play with different roms. I really don't want to have to mess with it. I don't mind taking the time to tinker with my unrooted phone's settings to get it to work the way I want, but other than I just hope the features it comes with out of the box work right.

It was my belief that the OP actually wanted an alternative that would bypass the paid mobile hotspot connection, otherwise, all he would have to do is pay the $30.00 for the hotspot and whatever data plan he wanted. A software solution connected by USB is the only way I know of.
