Root ROOTING For Dummies

Thanks, I think that worked! Now Im just trying to figure out if unrooted stock is the way to go when selling one of these...seems like Im potentially leaving money on the table :) Either way, I wanted to get back to "normal" before doing anything else to it...

well glad you were able to get unrooted. well you can always ask the buyer if they would like the phone rooted. you can then charge them to get the phone rooted for them or show them how to root the phone. either way you might get some extra green out of it:D

Hi, I got to the point where I added in my beta key and the phone restarted, but my phone is my source of net, so I need to check the rest of the steps and rebooted before doing the Bootloader update phase and now when I go back and click Bootloader I don't get prompted for an update it just says no image or wrong image under the PC36IMG.zip and Superuser.zip files and goes back to the fastboot screen. Is there a way to fix this? I already have S-OFF its just not prompting and cant find the images. Thanks and very sorry if this has been answered previously.

what PC36IMG file are you using? is it for a new recovery?

in order for hboot to see the PC36IMG file:
1.you need to change the the name so that it is only PC36IMG with no extra zips added. 2.also make sure that you transfer the file over to that sd card correctly. it needs to be juts on the card and not in any folder.

if those two are done correctly, then hboot should see it and ask you to update. select yes and you should be good to go.

I've done everything up to the part where you actually root the device. I get the error:

Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?

I followed your instructions on how to fix the problem, and after factory resetting twice, I still get this error.

Please help!

what is your hboot? power off your phone (make sure fastboot is disabled) then press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the bootloader. at the top of the screen is a bunch of info, can you show us what it says?

if your hboot is 2.10 or less then unrevoked should work and use this guide.

if it is hboot 2.15 or 2.16 then use this guide:

if you have hboot 2.18 then use this guide:

My Evo 4G has an hboot version of 2.18 and a radio version of 2.15.00.12.19.

I can't find a ROM for radio 12.19 anywhere. I have s-on. It is running android 2.3.5 and don't really understand all the technical stuff. Anyone out there help?? Thanks!
welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!
what exactly are you trying to do? are you trying to root your phone? you have to be rooted first to flash anything. here is the guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

OOps! My bad. I am trying to UN root my phone. Had a rough time doing it in the first place and now it needs service so I'd like to unroot it before I bring it in.

ok so looks like you are already unrooted. you have s-on with hboot 2.18 with the correct radio for it. not sure what you are looking for. do you have a customr recovery still?

Not sure what a customer recovery is or where I would get the correct one for my phone. When I go into the boot screen with the power + vol button, it says ****unlocked**** at the top so I figured I am still rooted. Not so?

how did you root in the first place? revolutionary, HTCdev method? if it is the HTCdev method there really is no unrooting method really. the only way is to upgrade the misc partition and run a ruu to get a stock rom which is outlined in the catain's throwback's guide.

if you used revolutionary then somewhere something went wrong.

I tried so many things that didn't work so I'm not sure how I actually did it in the first place. I know unrevoked did not work. I had upgraded to 2.3.5 before I decided to root the phone so from what it seemed, the options were limited. So, the answer may be to RE root with captain's guide by going down to hboot 2.10, then unroot again?

yes you will need to use the captains guide. no need to unlock it with HTCdev though as it is already unlocked, correct? so you will basically need to upgrade your misc partition then you can flash any PC36IMG RUU to get you back to stock. no need to downgrade only to have unrevoked reroot.

1. follow the capt's guide and enter the commands for mtd_eng and flash image files.

2.download this file:pc36img_supersonic_gb_sprint_wwe_4.67.651.3_radio_2.15.00.12.19_nv_2.33_release_234563_signed.zip - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download and rename it to PC36IMG and move it to the sd card.

3.reboot the phone into the bootloader and select yes to update. hopefully this will work for you.

most techs at this point really do not care what you have though. just saying.

Well, I did all this and went into the recovery option and i got the phone with a red triangle and an exclamation point in it. I made sure the .zip extension was removed and not just hidden. Guess i'll just bring it to the sprint store and hope they can just blow it away to factory defaults.

I really appreciate your warm welcome and the help you have given! Thanks!!

No worries, thats the stock recovery, thats normal. :)

The file that ocn linked should be flashed from the bootloader, not recovery. Make sure the file is named exactly PC36IMG.zip on your SD card, not PC36IMG.zip.zip Windows hides extensions. Place that on the root of the SD card, not in any folders, then power down. Hold volume down then power to get to hboot, let the phone scan for the PC36IMG and then hit volume up for the phone to update. let it do its thing, the hit volume up to reboot. Should be stock again.

when you say you did all this, does that mean you follow the capt's guide to upgrade the misc partition? you will need to do that first before trying the PC36IMG. you will not be able to change it otherwise.
