How exactly does WHATSAPP work? could it replace the bb chat?

hey guys, ive been hearing that this app would allow similar communication to the BB chat on non bb phones, if so than this would take away the major advantage of black berry phones which to my opinion are only being sold due to the bb chat feature which we have to admit has become a major way of communication.

if you guys know anything about this app, how it works, main difference between whatsapp and bb chat, PROs , CONs , ect.

thanks in advance ;)

thanks Clementine_3, thats exactly what i want to know, i need people to tell me how its been working, i have never used a bb either and dont plan to :p

so it doesn't have to be the same type of phone right? you should be able to chat from an android device with bb or IOS users?!?

if anyone has any errors to report or fixes for errors i would appreciate it ;) share your experience :p :p

thanks Kicksilver that's really great , i didn't see your reply to this before posting my last post which was then unnecessary lol

this really seems like the end of BBM which is the only thing (to me ) that keeps the bb sells up , i will download it today !
You're welcome mate.

If people would need the same device to text each other, we might aswell return to the stone age.

But isn't it more like chatting instead of texting? i mean its free right?

so how does it work, do you get like a pin # or username so that you can add your contacts and chat with them like windows messenger or bb chat?
Whatsapp contacts are based on your phone number.

For example, I have 500 contacts on my phone, and then I install Whatsapp. When I open it, it will search all the contacts in my phone that use whatsapp and will automatically add them to my contact list (in whatsapp).

It's free yes. Well, chatting is based on exchanging messages quickly, so it's both. It's like exchanging SMS, but in a much nicer interface. Besides being fast and stable, you can easily share videos, pictures, voice recordings, etc.

I went to their website, and it says that after one year it's a U$1.99 free/year. That's pretty cheap for such a service.

But Viber says its basic chatting function will always be free, so people will eventually migrate.

And yes, it warns you of incoming messages, the whatsapp notificaion icon will remain in your status bar until you read it.

I took a screenshot of my own homescreen to show you, it's the green icon to the left on the status bar.
