Regarding the discussions relating to Google changing the way the N1 is sold and instead having distributed through VZW in-store (along with the Incredible) in order to increase sales and visibility... I think we need to consider what Google is trying to accomplish with the N1. Are they really trying to be one of the top phones sales-wise? Google has said all along that they weren't going to get into the hardware business and needed to avoid conflict with other android based products (essentially their Android customers). Android and all the Googleness associated with it is what they want out there. They felt they needed to "raise the bar" as high as they could. I think by selling a feature-rich phone themselves (the N1), they could put pressure on carriers and hardware vendors to come out with high quality smartphones that use Android to the fullest.

I don't believe their goal was to make a lot of money selling N1's... so the arguments that Google would change their sales approach solely for that reason doesn't make sense to me. Now, if they decided to sell the N1 at VZW stores to help with supportability, that may not be a terrible reason.

That's an interesting way of looking at it. You could very well be correct! I'm under the impression they want to bank as much green as possible so they are testing the waters. Maybe their mission is to get more android in the market and force carriers and phones makers to up their game. It just seems like an expensive way of going about it... Why sell your own phone and have to deal with the PR nightmare it has been for them and hire new employees and create new positions just to boost the market? They could have spent those funds on make Android EVEN better or more advanced and boosted the android market that way, right?

I think if Google spent the time and money into their own phone they are trying to make a big difference in the cell phone world (including boosting the market and increasing market share) and hoping on making some serious money from it. Eventually. Things like this don't happen over night and you have to learn from your mistakes... I mean who opens up an online store and sells a product and after it comes out and customers are having problems, then you make a support line? Like, get what I mean. I think some parts of their coming out party weren't thought out completely. They will get there though.

also... I think they want to say "F U apple" Eric Schmidt was on Apple's board for awhile right? I am sure he picked up on some things and was forming his own ideas and whatnot all the while.

i agree, but also want to add this. while the n1 sales weren't thru the roof, they did absolutely no advertising for it (online ones, sure, but there were already google ads in those spots from what i noticed. they just changed them to N1 ads). so while the droid made alot of sales, vzw also advertised the hell out of it and spending alot of money in the process. with google having nothing to do with the hardware (htc) and contracts (let the carriers do all that), it almost seems as if any money they make is gravy. so, my opinion is if you look at the amount of money brought in for the n1 compared to the amount of money spent on advertising, that ratio might not be TOO far off of the ratio of the droid sales compared to advertising....

I believe that is the gist of it...

Sounds reasonable to me... :)

BE WARNED, THIS IS WAY OFF TOPIC

I just wanted to make mention that I completely respect all contributors to this current thread. As most of you know we have gone through multiple threads on the same subject, but they kept getting locked due to issues and flame wars. To all new contributors/readers welcome, I hope you are having a good experience here. To those who have been here since this whole thing started kudos, it would have been very easy to pick up and leave and then we would all be in the dark.

I'm finally happy to be part of this community and this running thread, keep up the good work, especially you guys that have the brains to do the investigative work.

Another idea. What if Google really didn't care about sales and purposefully only advertised on the web to see the real impact that TV ads still have in the whole world of advertising. Maybe this is a beta test of how they market future offerings whether it be a phone or something entirely different.

Remember that google's main revenue system is through it's advertising framework.

A lot of people seem worried about VZW support for the N1. I have a 2G iPhone (I'm ashamed to admit:() and T-mobile is actually good with support. They will help you set up internet, troubleshoot and everything. When VZW has the Nexus One, they will definitely have good support for it too.

Thanks everyone for this awesome thread!

also an interesting point. I think only Google really knows. It will be interesting to see what the future holds.

I will say I haven't had any issues with Verizon's support. So yes, I would expect them to have good support for the N1. It's only good business sense to have quality support for any product and/or service you provide!

Yes, but remember that this is technically not a VZW device, it is a Google device so I don't see why it wouldn't turn out like T-Mo. Google doesn't want carriers involved. As you have heard even on the news, Google is letting everything network be handled by the network and everything phone being handled by Google. Do you really think they are going to change it just for VZW kicking T-Mo in the butt?

Nexus One coming to Verizon Mar 23 – Android and Me

above states -
We’ve finally got a date on the Nexus One’s much anticipated Verizon arrival: March 23. Last week we heard that a CDMA version of the HTC device had cleared FCC and we knew it was only a matter of time before an exact date was revealed.
The date comes from a Google employee but at this point neither Google nor Verizon has confirmed the date.

I wish some of these rumors would get confirmed! I know this is the "incredible" thread but there is so much N1 lately I will take my beating from the "seniors"

I don't think CeBIT is for that kind of announcements. CTIA is our best bet and we may not see anything. I'm starting to fall in love with the Nexus One though. I'd be happy with either.
