Name of app that pops when USB cable attached??

Hi, I'm very technical, but not about phones. And I can't search the Forums here, because I don't know the *name* of the program that is failing to run. Hopefully someone will understand what I'm talking about.

I'm trying to following the instructions for "AT&T Cell Phones: How Do I Connect In Mass Storage Mode to Transfer Data From My SGH-i897 (Captivate) Phone To A PC?" as per SAMSUNG , and I just remembered that when I first got the phone, every time I plugged in the USB cable to charge it, an application with a black background and three very wide gray push-buttons would appear. I always ignored that application, but apparently now I need it - and, of course, now it no longer appears when I plug in the USB cable! I don't remember when it stopping appearing.

What's the name of that app? How do I get it back? Thanks.

What you are referring to is the dialog box that asked you how you wanted to connect the phone ... it said Select USB mode and gave you the options of Kies, Media Player and Mass Storage.

The SGS2 is a little different. Where the Captivate used only Kies mini, the SGS2 (i777) uses full blown Kies. You can get it from Samsung's support site if you are so inclined. If nothing else, installing Kies gives you the necessary drivers for your phone.

When you plug the SGS2 into your PC, you should see on the phone MTP-connected in the notification pull-down. If you are using Windows 7 on your PC, go to start>devices and printers and you should see your phone listed under devices as SGH-I777. If it's there, you can right-click and select browse files.

If it's not there, you probably don't have the necessary drivers, but you can still connect as mass storage. Unplug the USB cable. On the phone go to menu>settings>wireless and networks>USB utilities (I don't know why they hid that in this menu) and select connect storage to PC. Now plug in the phone. The rest will be the same as with the Captivate.

Um, I recognize that as English, but ... SGS2? Captivate? Kies? i777? I did C++/C#/SQL Server for a few decades, so my brain is just not what it used to be. Is there a simpler way to go about this without having to learn anything? (Yes, I know how that sounds, but I'm old... that's what happens, at least to me. I have zero interest in learning smart phone technology. )

Thank you (sincerely) for attempting to help, but this is all just too confusing. All I want to do (and I'm having second thoughts) is upgrade to Gingerbread. Can you point me to a step-by-step on how to do that (for idiots)?

(On a side note: Why can't I just point my cell phone to a web address and download the update? What am I missing here? That's a serious question: why is this not just a button click? Thanks again for your time.)

Maybe I'm confused. Are you trying to update your Captivate to gingerbread? Or are you trying to transfer files on your Galaxy SII? I assumed you had a Captivate and you've upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy SII (SGS2) since you posted in the Galaxy S2 forum.

Okay, I have no idea what kind of phone I have. It sure looks like the phone in this video Samsung Captivate Review - Watch CNET's Video Review . On the front it says AT&T at the top and Samsung on the bottom. On the back it says Galaxy and then a stylized S. Settings, About Phone tells me it's model number is SAMSUNG-SGH-I897, firmware version is 2.2. Is there any other identifying mark on this thing?

See, this is the stuff I hate. Is it a Captivate? A Galaxy S? A Galaxy S2? Is Captivate a kind of a Galaxy S? Or is it a kind of a Galaxy S2? Or neither? Or both? Why the hell can't it have one simple name. Am I in the wrong forum and wasting your time? Uurrgghhh.

Sounds like you have a Captivate. Let me move the thread to the right forum for you. Don't worry, we'll get you squared away.

First off, yes you have a Captivate, which is the ATT variant of the Galaxy S. Galaxy S phones go by different names depending on the carrier. Then there are the Samsung Galaxy S II or SGS2 phones, but it sounds like that's not relevant to you now.

Back to your original question: Go to Settings, Applications, USB Settings and choose "Ask on connection" to return it to the behavior you remember.
