Root ROOTING For Dummies

Im having some connection issues with my 3g and then wifi as well. 3g is slow(..well slower then what it was, haha) and wifi sometimes doesnt work, it will connect but no internet. just rooted my evo and all went well just this iussue. any suggestions? (btw, everything worked fine at first, idk what happened and also tried a recovery.) **Update after doing a recovery my wifi wont work period when i go to turn it on i get ERROR..... :-/ help?

Well this really isn't the right place for this but its cool I'll answer.

Are you running a Rom? If so what recovery, what was your wiping/flashing process, did you flash any mode/themes/kernels, restore any data, etc.

As much info as possible would help tremendously. ;)

After every flash/install update profile and prl in the settings - about phone - look for updates. update profile and prl but NOT software/android etc.

I did do that and still is having issues (think maybe redo the root it will fix issue?)

re rooting would not solve the problem. you will need to unroot first and then reroot. there are easier ways to fix your situation.

what baseband are you on? have you updated your radios. you might want to try that. you can get them here:[ Radios ][ 9-5 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers
just make sure that you have your wimax backed up when you do a nandroid backup. clockwork mod backs it up automatically, but amon ra you need to make sure that you are also checking wimax.

also please read this:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...before-you-flash-your-radios-read-thread.html
please ignore the warning as long as you have your wimax backed up, you will not loose them. just wanted to make sure what can happen.

Ok, I have the supersonic evt3 rom with s-off. Hboot 2.10, radio 2.15.00.11.19, clockworkmod,recovery 2.6.0.1

I cleared the cache and whatnot seems a little better ill have to check with wifi.
I dont know if my radio is up to date, I did a backup. My PRI Version 2.33_003,& PRL Version is 60683. I think that all of it... Maybe now itll be easier for it to be narrowed down...? I think ive done everything cept the radio update, do I need to do that or is my radio ok?

i doubt that the evo will have any more updates. maybe a few more but this phone is eol so hard to say when if we get any more updates. but you can count on AF to be on top of it when it happens.

once again thanks again for your help, for being consistant and patient with me. i might ask a dumb question, but id rather ask then not and mess up everything. BTW. i did do the radio update, No Problems!:D everything seems to be working ok now. if anything else comes up ill make sure to come back. ill be doing some more research on here for now so wish me luck. and please if you feel theres anything i need to know about rooting or anything around there i.e good apps, tips, trick, etc let me know im all ears!

i am intrested in learning more about the roms and how they work or what they can do by changing to a new one. wanted the Sprint Lovers one but nowhere to download it because the link got shut down.

i would try out mikg3.0 which is a combo of sense 2.1 and sense 3.0. also if you want to try a pure sense 3.0 rom then mik3d is pretty good as well. if you want to try some non sense roms then try aosp roms. good ones would be cm7 or deck's. you can find them here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html

No you don't want to do it and to stop it I think you have to flash a rom that has that taken out. Mikg, for example. ;)

However you might wait a day or so because Mik is about to release an update for it.:D

Ok, feeling like a noob today...

I'm trying to unroot my evo to sell it (slow tear rolls down cheek), but can't find the files I need. I rooted originally when still on Froyo, and have HBoot 2.10, so I tried to download the "HBoot 2.10 - S/W 3.70" files from the link in the OP of this thread, but it seems to be a dead link. I've been searching around on xda, but all I find are dead links there as well. Any idea where I can find the proper files I need?

Oh, and that RUU will do everything right, including radios? I don't need to downgrade those separately?

TIA.

Have you tried looking to see if one of these unrooting threads has what you are looking for?

edit: thinking that maybe ocn has had to provide it for someone with a dropbox link or something, you know?

Thanks for the reply -- but I actually found it here: HTC EVO 4G Downloads - RootzWiki

And it looks like the radio is included, correct?

If so, it looks like I'm just a few short steps away from relinquishing ownership of my beloved Evo. Feeling strangely sentimental... probably because all you guys here have been so awesome. :)

Yep that looks correct. The 3.70r ruu is what you want. I do have it in my dropbox if you need it.

I hear you, the phone is great, the forum is great. hate to see you have to move on.

Like Roy and Dale would say, Happy Trails!

don't know about the radios, but there is a list of them in there too, if it doesn't do it.

Let us know, ok? And thanks for all the help you have provided in here too!

Ok, so I did need to downgrade my radios to use unrevoked -- I tried to flash the s-on tool without doing that first, and it froze on "verifying system type..." so I had to pull the battery (that was scary). But then I downgraded the radios with an update zip, and got s-on. BUT, then I tried to run the 3.70 RUU I found on rootzwiki but was getting an error saying it failed, that my "main version is older" than current. So I then I flashed the stock rooted 3.70 froyo rom, and then ran the RUU again. Still didn't work. I finally, probably from sheer frustration, just flashed a slightly newer RUU, and that worked. I don't know why I thought I had to have the corresponding RUU to what I had when I first rooted, but at least I'm finally fully unrooted and ready for sale. Phew.

And yes, I'll be sad to go, I doubt I'll find a more helpful bunch than you all here... and for a flashaholic like myself I'm sure most of you will be surprised where I'm going: I got a Photon. The (long) story for those interested:

I am in a (civil and gentlemanly) argument with Sprint trying to get out of my contract as my reception and data speeds have tanked. But since I can't get out right now, I was looking for a new toy to hold me over. So I was looking for a used 3vo -- but after reading ENDLESS forums (across all forums, including AF, XDA, AC, etc) and speaking to tons of people, I found that the Evo3D has much worse radios than the OG Evo (among many other complaints). With my signal so bad already, I couldn't have that, so I started looking at other phones. And the one phone where owners were highly satisfied, almost all of them, was the photon.

It is apparently just rock-solid in dependability and performance even when stock, and it's radios (phone, 3G, 4G, GPS) blow every other Sprint phone out of the water. (The Epic Touch has really high satisfaction too, but it's more like "I'm ok with the mediocre data signal and crappy GPS for the amazing processor speed and wonderful screen" -- and if I wasn't in such a bad signal area, maybe I could deal with that).

So I got a like-new Photon off of Craigslist to hold me over until either (a) I jump ship to Verizon, or (b) Sprint's network improves enough that I stick around and get the variant of the HTC One X they hopefully will get. And since the Evo still has so much more hype than the Photon, I'm actually making a profit after I sell the Evo and buy the Photon.

I'm also hoping that the lack of development for the Photon, depriving me of my flashing addiction, will allow me to spend more time doing other things with my time ... but I'll probably just mess with every launcher on the market for awhile, until the Photon's CM9 is stable. ;)

so how are the radios on the Photon?

So the Photon? Holy Crap, man, this phone is amazing! Reception is ridiculous compared to my Evo -- I'm actually getting to use 4G! I had no idea there was 4G that worked near me. 3G speeds are faster and more reliable too. And I don't roam anymore in most places where I used to on the Evo.

And performance? Again, Holy Crap! I thought I knew what lag-free and good performance was with some light ROMs like decks or classic on the Evo, but the Photon blows them out of the water stock-unrooted. Menus, settings, apps, web-surfing... all amazingly fast and responsive. Now the stock launcher blows, so I immediately loaded go launcher (may go back to launcher pro, but right now Go has none of the lag it had for me on the Evo). But man, I am just loving this thing! And I don't have the problems folks have with the screen -- looks great, more clear and bright than the Evo (being able to see a phone in the sun is a big plus). :) So, yeah, very happy with the purchase. :) :)
