LTE.

i have read that it's pretty fast!!!!!!

we have dates yet? aaaand will our droids be compatable? aaaad with googles release that they figured a way to transfer 1 billion gb's of data in a matter of seconds (i know, its a lil bit less) will this impact phones/cell phones?

i understand that it is hard wired for transfer, but with LTE supposedly being so fast, this ups the anti for the future of android. yeah?

lets discuss something about the future of android.

perhaps what the new 'market' will look like... a new one HAS to be on the horizon with how rapidly it growing (personal opinion).

The Droid will not be upgradeable to LTE. LTE is backwards compatible with GSM (the same technology AT&T and T-Mobile use). Verizon's entire network is CDMA (different technology). So, Verizon will most likely run 2 networks for a while until their LTE network is good enough to kill off CDMA.

This is going to be a slippery slope for Verizon, as they don't want to upset owners of CDMA handsets, yet it will be costly to run 2 networks. Most likely Verizon make dual-band phones available for a couple of years. These phones would get lesser battery life, but would allow for Verizon to upgrade to LTE while their customer's upgrade their handsets.

Some high-level muckety muck at VZW was quoted just the other day stating that they're on schedule for having 25-30 metropolitan markets up and running LTE in 2010. (Keep in mind that we're only 2 months into 2010.)

I also agree with onefix about VZW selling some dual-band phones to make the transition.

I'm sure it's going to be a while before there is reliable, widespread LTE over the Verizon network. Personally, I don't want it if it's only going to work in major metropolitan areas. I'll wait the few extra years until it's reliable everywhere that Verizon is right now.

While it's true that there are no LTE enabled phones being sold, LTE was developed by the same group that developed GSM. So, it's going to be easier for GSM providers to upgrade to LTE (if only for the fact that the standard was defined by the same group).

CDMA will not have such a path. Verizon has the advantage of time though. Verizon has begun their upgrade a year in advance of AT&T (they plan on upgrading to LTE in 2011).

i do have other forums bookmarked, but i stick with this one because i thought it showed sign of life outside of the daily grind.

I'll be interested to see how quickly Verizon gets phones on LTE. Initially I'm sure it'll be 'air-cards' that get rolled out, just wonder how long before we see phones that will utilize the technology. Where I live, we have 3 options for internet service. Dial up, air-card or satellite internet.

Dial up = no way (no brainer)
Air card = download limit by all carriers
Satellite = $80 a month for 1.6MB DL speed and throttling after 400MB per day.

LTE could be cool. It'll never work with our current Droids though. I'm still pretty skeptical it will be out this year, and even if it does come out, it's probably only going to be a few select cities. Select being one I'm not in. Honestly I doubt I'll ever see it anyway. I'm not impressed with Verizon's network. I had a faster and better connection with AT&T. I jumped ship just for the Droid, now I'm stuck with it for two years.

I agree with you about all the 2.1 threads though, why can't people just add to the current thread?

Not to be rude, but you can't expect much of a conversation on the topic. First mistake: Incomplete thread title. No one knows what the discussion is unless they look, and a lot of people won't even look. I'd suggest editing. Second, you can't talk crap to other members and expect positive results. If someone posts something you don't like, just ignore it. Responding only makes you look bad... not them.

No. Any city that has no lights on in its skyline is not a major metropolitan area. It is a graveyard where all of the criminals had to move out into the suburbs for people to rob. (Sorry about any bitterness, I just hate to see my home area dying like that.)

For now, I imagine it will cater to busineses more than normal people. I suspect it will be annoyingly expensive, too. It took a while for the carriers to come around on 3g, the thing is that wireless broadband will be a competitor, so they had better get it together.

That whitepapers about LTE are truly drool-worthy, and I hope that the implementation will be as good. It might be a while before we actually get to enjoy it, so grab a Snickers bar.

Sort of like "sunk in" "get through"

It is mainly used when one party is being unreasonable or just plain ignoring the other.

Most people think that there is a failure to communicate because there is some interference that is prohibiting mutual understanding. When something sinks in or gets through, the other party has become more reasonable or "gets" what the first party is trying to relay.

Those same people are usually naive or polite and chalk it up to a misunderstanding than someone being uncooperative.

We all fancy ourselves to be very busy so a lot of things don't sink in unless there is a direct connection to what we care about. In some cases if we have to spend any time searching for something to care about in a given exchange with strangers, we quickly become disinterested and resort to ignoring people or picking on them to entertain ourselves (again finding something to gain from the exchange.) I think this is why a lot of people don't use the Search tool on these boards because it can be slow and unproductive sometimes.

That being said, LTE is a perfect example of this thread. It is so far away for most of us (those of you who don't live in big cities or those of us who aren't agencies/businesses) and the exact details of what we are going to end up with are so ethereal that it becomes easy to dismiss as there is no immediate gain.

Well yea. Time will make the Droid obsolete. Technically it already is. There are faster, more up to date phones already shipping. I really don't expect LTE to take off for a few years.

The last I read like the others have been saying was up to 30 select cities this year, and a full blown network by 2013. With most carriers going to LTE I'm excited for a full line up of phones hopefully. No more GSM/CDMA hold outs.
