Help Problem with custom contact ringtones

I feel the same. Yesterday I reassigned the same ringtone to this person & a bit later he called, in fact there were two calls from the same person & I was happy to see it rang correctly BOTH times but today the same old trouble back to default ringtone. Now I have changed the default ringtone (as it came from the factory- ring ring) to another given by Samsung & should be in the phone memory (called 'Pure Tone'), now I am waiting & watching :)

Problem is back again but in a mutated form :( Ringtones assigned to Groups stopped working from yesterday & only the Default ringtone was ringing. Now removed some groups & individually assigned them a ringtone.
I bet that will work for a few days or so - then back to 'normal'!

I've tried EVERYTHING I can think of, EVERYTHING anyone on this or other forums have suggested - each new change works for a few days, then it's as though the phone 'forgets' the settings again!

I really am out of ideas now, and looks like everyone else is. (Apart from Samsung and Android, who never actually came up with any in the first place!)

I am just hanging on now until I can get a different phone. This should NOT be a problem that can't be fixed. It's a schoolboy error.

Shame on Android and Samsung for not being able to fix it (or not being interested enough to try).

Right - here's the question:

Does anyone have any idea if rooting my phone might solve this ringtone problem?

Rooting doesn't necessarily appeal to me, but I am desperate to get this custom ringtone issue sorted, and if rooting would do it, I'm prepared to go down that route (pardon the pun) now - I'm desperate.

I'm aware that rooting has it's risks and that it will void my warranty, but what use is a warranty for this problem, when the manufacturers can't fix it?!

Any ideas? Does anyone know if rooting would definitely enable me to fix the custom ringtone problem, or even if it would be worth a try?

Thanks for any advice.

Well I posted a seperate thread in Android Lounge about rooting with a view to perhaps solving this problem. Here is the link:

http://androidforums.com/android-lo...-answer-custom-contact-ringtones-problem.html

The reply suggested it wouldn't perhaps solve the issue, but questioned whether the problem might be my SD card, in particular the class (therefore speed) of it.

I 'think' the idea was that a higher class of SD card was needed to ensure faster access and transfer of the ringtone so as the phone can access it quickly on demand (i.e. when a caller with a custom ringtone assigned calls the phone).

If I have understood it correctly, that would seem to make sense to me - not that I'm well clued up about these things, of course!

I have an old SD card taken from an old Samsung phone of mine (clearly from before they even began classifying them!) - just a Samsung brand 2GB unclassed one, so I'm wondering if the poster - lunatic59 - may be on to something.

So out of interest, what 'class' of SD card are you using socrates0? Do you agree this might be the problem - before I rush out to buy a replacement SD card! As obviously, if you are using a faster class of SD card and have this problem anyway, it might not be the answer after all.

Hmm sounds logical about the sd card. Before dumping the card take a backup of all folders on the card & then format it in the phone itself then copy the folders back & see if it helps, if not using a higher class card could be the next step. I use the card which came with the box (2GB) its a 'class 4' card but i did not format it when I bought it.

Class Rating 2. Transfer speed is a minimum of 2MB/sec.
Class Rating 4. Transfer speed is a minimum of 4MB/sec.
Class Rating 6. Transfer speed is a minimum of 6MB/sec.
Class Rating 10. Transfer speed is a minimum of 10MB/sec.

BTW I am on ver 2.3.4 & I use the default s/w in the phone to assign the ringtones, never used an app for doing that.

I have an 8 gig card I bought separately from best buy and I have this problem...

Hmm. But have you formatted it after inserting it into your phone, if not then do that as mentioned above. If the problem still persists then at least you can be assured that it was not the size or class of the card that is causing the problem.

In my case I have now formatted the card in the phone & assigned custom ringtones to individual contacts only & not to groups as I had done before. And it seems to be holding up as of now :D

Since we are on the topic of memory cards, I came across this article on an Indian site. Of course this based on the Indian markets but I am sure this rubbish is being sold world wide. Anyway its good to know how not get duped :D
We’re definitely no strangers to counterfeit and fake products. In today’s world, it’s become commonplace to see an ‘Appal’ phone, here and a ‘Nipe’ shoe there. Piracy and cheap fake counterfeits have percolated into each and every segment of the market, so much so that there are extremely high chances that there’s a fake to every original product you’ve seen in the market.

Fake memory cards out there ? Don't be fooled

Hi illu - nothing at all is working for me either, and neither Samsung nor Android seem interested. It's probably classed as a minor problem to them, but to me it makes or breaks a phone (especially as this is a function that is clearly stated as being available on this phone!)

I have spent nearly 6 months now trying to get a solution to this, with no luck whatsoever. I'm now unfortunately thinking: as much as I otherwise love this phone, it's finally time to give up, stop trying to fight a losing battle, and get a more reliable phone. :(

Could you ask for a new phone if its still in warranty? In India we buy our phones separately & it usually does not come with the data plan. So we have to go to the manufacturer for warranty. I believe its different in your area.
Yes, often in the UK you get the phone free on contract (so you pay for your data plan and are tied in - for, say 12 or 18 months - to the network company who supplies your phone)

However, it is possible to have a SIM only contract (as I do), or 'pay as you go', in which case you would buy your phone seperately.

So, like you, I would also have to go to the manufacturer for warranty. Samsung have told me that they will not just replace my phone - they want me to return it to them for a month, but they cannot guarantee the ringtone issue can be sorted, as they don't have any idea why it is happening.

They actually asked me why custom contact ringtones was a big issue for me!

I give up!
