Root Can I do better than 2.1?

I am still enjoying using a second-hand Eris i recently got from a guy at work.

I see that it is running 2.1. One app I just saw says it requires 2.2 and up. Other apps I hear of don't show up in Market, but do on other phones. Is there a straightforward way to update my OS without rooting? Is it worth the bother?

2.1 was the last official update for the Eris. There are custom ROMS running 2.2 and 2.3, but you would have to root the phone to install them. It's not that difficult to do and is explained very well in the "All things root" subforum.

Look through the "Universal Root for Dummies" thread if you are interested in rooting the phone. It gives very good step by step directions. None of the developers are still working on the Eris, so the ROMS that are out there will not be updated any further.

The best ones out there seem to be:
xtraSense (2.1 Sense-based ROM). Similar to stock Eris
xtrROM (2.1 ROM w/out Sense)
Condemned CM7 (2.3 Gingerbread)
GingerShedBread/GSB (2.3 Gingerbread)

2.2 (Froyo) never really ran well on the Eris. I would either stick with 2.1 or go to 2.3.

Do NOT load KaosFroyo or KaosGingerbread. These ROMS were never really completely finished and won't run well unless you make a lot of modifications to the settings.

A good way to dip a toe in the water is to try the xtrSENSE rom. The rooting for dummies guide is also easy to follow, making the process painless.

I've rooted and flashed xtrSENSE, and when it's all said and done you'll end up with a user-interface that looks like stock, but will run a little faster, and have about twice as much room in internal phone memory for apps.

Which ROM is better?
Condemned CM7 (2.3 Gingerbread)?
or..
GingerShedBread/GSB (2.3 Gingerbread)?

They are both great. I think Condemned is easier to flash, as it has Google apps incorporated - a single flash - rather than having to download the Google apps and do a flash of GSB and then a flash of Google apps. That's really the only major difference.
