I'll reluctantly admit that I can count the number of books I read before the age of 25 on one hand, and I was FORCED to read those. However, I loved math. My reading scores on my ACT were 6-7 points lower than everything else, but I turned out just fine 
I am very good at math, but what they teach now-a-days confuses me. What the heck is regrouping and what's wrong with just carrying the one? It's math, it doesn't change.

Broad spectrum of teaching experience in my family.
The current trend right now in most systems around here is to pass students whether they pass or not. In my mom's system, the teacher has to give the students a 50 on any assignment they turn in whether or not they earned it. They could put their name on it and attempt one problem on a 100 question test and they have to give them a 50. Then at the end of the year if they couldn't muster a passing grade even with the help of being given a 50 on any attempted assignment, the teacher is still pressured (with threats of firings) to pass students, especially in their senior year when they are pressure to allow them to graduate.
Other systems will allow the students to make what they make on tests but then aren't allowed or are also pressured to pass every student. The BS reasoning behind it is that it's emotionally damaging to the student if they are held back and "fail" a grade.
