Buy now or wait for Prime 700T?

Question to Prime owners...are the wifi issues such that I should wait until it comes out, or are they really not that big a deal, and should go ahead and buy the current Prime?

I have been on the fence about a tablet for months, actually was going to buy the original Transformer with the keyboard, until I recently decided to just go with the Prime. But after reading about all the wifi/gps issues, and seeing there is already a new Prime coming out soon...wondering if I should hang on until then....

What do you think?

I've had no issues with wifi and this is with a Belkin router and I've had no issues tethering to my phone.

If you plan on using the tablet as a GPS navigational device, then the Prime is probably not for you. Otherwise, the GPS works as it should.

I highly recommend this device to anyone but remember, technology moves quickly so something bigger and better may be around the corner. Also, ASUS suggested that the Prime will get Jelly Bean in the future so if Google's operating system is important, the future looks good for the Prime

GPS is not a deal breaker for me. Doubtful I would use it that much...but wifi is obviously important.

I have 2 Asus RT-N12, N Only, in the house.

ICS/Jelly Bean is important...not an Apple (or Microsoft) fan...

For me it was a buy and I am not regretting it at all. I do not have the same issues as others have shared. I feel that I can enjoy my time now and wait and see about moving on to something else in the future. I do not see a need to leave my prime as it does everything I wanted very well and then some.

Was reading the CNET article from another thread ( Putting the Transformer Prime in perspective | Mobile - CNET News ) ... makes it sounds like the issues other than the GPS really only effected a minority of units.

I don't expect to use BT much at all...and would likely turn it off altogether.

So...now thinking the Prime might be just fine...especially if the 700T is primarily about fixing the GPS.

Would like to hear from someone on the board that returned their Prime, and why.

I would wait for windows 8 tablets, wish I would have.


My Prime has been great however, wifi is perfect, gps works great.


I thought GPS was important when I bought it, but I have only used it once to test it, and never again. While I am glad that my gps does work, it is definitely not used like I thought I would (one time in 2-3 months).


I would wait for windows 8 verizions of this tablet, IMO, it will be much productive to have a tablet running the same OS as my PC. It will be able to run MS Office (if they make an arm version) but, the ability to run the same OS as my computer, would be a big bump in productivity.

I think win 8 will leapfrog Android and take on IOS.

I would never want an IOS device, android is far superior in my opinion (although windows on a tablet would be even better IMO)

Prime is great. My wi-fi works great. Haven't figured out a need for GPS on a device that only uses wi-fi.

Couldn't be happier with my Prime.

Wifi is just fine on mine (and tethering to my Nexus is equally as good).
Question is, what are your planned uses? Is this your first tablet? I've had 7" and 10" tabs and they have different purposes. I love the Prime with the docking station. It is arguably the best tablet on the market right now. Obviously, something new and better is always around the corner. Once thing to keep in mind is Asus has so far been horrible with ensuring proper stock of their devices, so unless you're able to pre-order the new one, you may be waiting some time until you actually have it.

I don't like the idea of a Prime with 1080p display, 3d performance will be effected allot.

I was going to wait for the Transformer Tab Infinity (official name for the 700 series), but for me,I decided not to wait for a marginally better tablet at a higher cost. I'm just hoping to not have wifi issues.

I just got my ATP on Friday. Right out of the box had wi-fi issues but i upgraded the firmware and no issues. The graphics are spectacular. The docking station is a must have. As soon as i got this i took it to school and was taking notes, surfing web with chrome browser beta, and was reading through my text book via Amazon kindle. I was even able to remove access to my home PC. Also this things battery life is wicked! The games are awesome. I know the infinity series is right around the corner, i can't wait to see how Asus tops this. Get it now or wait for the TF700, doesn't matter but ipad ain't nothin' compared to Tf201. I use this for primarily school and work, but this also is my entertainment as well. My PS3 broke and i haven't been able to repair. These games and their graphics are insane. Plus the controller capability ???!!!!!. I might not need to replace my PS3.

I was thinking of getting. Windows tablet because it' s what I'm currently running on my home PCs, I just couldn't wait too long. The ability to remote access my PC fills that need. So am able to run the following: All of Microsoft Office Programs such as Visio 2010, 2007, MS Project 2007, Virtual DJ, Fruity Loops, Google Sketch Up, Vuze, Outlook, Chrome, Itunes.

I was not able to stream videos via remote accessing. That was a test of capabilies as I am fully aware that the TF201 is capable of streaming via netflix and such.

While I would like to get the tablet with 1080 display, not sure how it would look/run. I also didn't want to spend anymore than I already have. This tablet has been great, runs great, looks great. With the dock, this tablet is on a whole other level than any other tablet.

I am not sure about GPS, never used it and never will since this is wifi only. Wifi on mine has been good, not great, but no worse than my phone, but not as good as my laptop. It hasn't effected my performance in the least. If your looking for a tablet and okay with the price, not a better tablet out there yet to buy.

This will be my first tablet. I want something that can provide both entertainment and some level of productivity for work (ie, connectivity in mtgs, working from home, etc.). I have been analyzing this for months...starting off thinking the Kindle Fire would be a good first step, then Arcos, Acer Iconias, and finally coming to the Transformer, now the Prime.

Never considered an iPad...and wouldn't buy a Microsoft Tablet under any circumstances. I run Linux (Mint mostly, now just standard Ubuntu) at home, not Windows.

I think after doing some more reading, and thinking about it, I am good with the Prime. I will be updating it to current first thing, and possibly rooting. Looked at getting it from Amazon, but there is a 1-2 week wait on them...so will likely order it this week from another place that has them in stock.

Not sure whether I will get the keyboard at same time when I get the tablet, but will ultimately get it I am sure.

I just purchased the Asus prime and I am more than pleased. This is my first tablet so I am still learning the ways of android, but I am loving it. l have had no issues with wifi or anything else. I to had read the negative things regarding wifi and gps problems but I have not experienced those issues.

My daughter has the ipad 2 and after using hers I new I would prefer the more capable android OS. I looked at all the android tablets and the prime just blew everything else away.

yeah no issues with wifi for me either. this tablet is awesome so far. i have had for almost a week now and i love this thing. i was at starbucks the other day with my tablet and someone comment about my netbook. i corrected him and told him that this was a tablet which he did not believe me so i undocked my prime and showed him. next thing i know i have like 3 or 4 people wanted to check it out!!!

i think that you will be more then happy with this tab. i am. when you get it let us know what you think of it.

That is the same thing that happened to me. I ended up surrounded by quite a few IPAD2 owners gawking over my Prime. It was so funny when I looked back and saw their IPADs lying on the tables abandoned. I'm so happy with my Prime.

I was all set to buy the prime when it came out, but the known issues prevented me from buying it. I travel allot for work, so GPS is something I would use allot. Its nice to be able to sit in my hotel room and use GoogleMaps to figure out what restaurants and attractions are close. The Wifi was the deal breaker for me. For anyone who stays in allot of hotels knows, wifi signals vary, and are generally pretty crappy. I have a co-worker who has the prime, and he is always fighting Wifi issues. I admit the prime physically is a piece of art, and would love to own one. But I just can not justify spending $500 on a device that is known to not be 100% reliable. For some,I am sure the GPS and wifi issues are not a deal breaker, it all depends on how you use your tablet and in what environment.

For me the new ASUS will be what I look at when it comes out in June, and a few reviews hit.

Office Depot has them with free shipping/next day delivery, so getting it from there with the Moku Slim Fit multi-Angle case.

Can't wait to get my hands on it!

What Jericho said above explains where I'm at right now. For those who have bought recently, how is the WiFi? And the GPS - ok, obviously you can't do turn by turn navigation with it, but is it good enough to sit in a hotel room, wifi in, and check urban spoon, or take a look at google maps and see what is around you - the more stationary type uses? I really need it to be able to find wifi in strange places and to know where I am at. Otherwise, yeah, I'm gonna have to keep waiting and save some more money.

I wanted to use my gps on my trip to Florida but it would not work while my friends iPad2 worked great. I would have liked for it to work if for nothing else to show him my Prime kicks his iPads ass. Other than that I like my Asus way better than his iPad. That being said, I think I'll return mine and get the Infinity because navigation isn't the only thing that suffers from the gps not working.

They gps works very well. I don't see how u use a tablet to navigate while driving anyway.

Im super happy with this buy and recommend it!
The only issue i might have is coming from the fact im totally new to android and struggle with going getting over from the dark side (ms) habitslike mail etc... oh and the fact i write a lot (hence this purchase) and i still have not figured out how to solve the spelling issue.

Buy it you'll like it.

When it comes to electronics, it is all based on a combination of factors like hardware, software, tolerances and environmental. This is why you see varying experiences by owners. You can tweak most by tightening up on tolerance variances via manufacturing (as seen in newer makes...not all though) and via OTA updates. The physical as we know is by changing the materials on the rear cover, which I wished they would offer as an option for the TF201t. I am one of those who have no issues. My prime is only a week old from manufacturer and less to me. I feel for those with issues though.

As for the IPAD HD, I think it was a good move for Apple. I never will buy one, but I do like it. I thought it was funny when they made sure to compare the A5x to the Tegra 3.
