1A or 2A car charger

I wouldn't call that "the solution" any more than any of the other suggestions in this thread.

My problem with that adapter you linked to is it's freaking HUGE and so either takes up valuable real estate in my center console, or protrudes from my ashtray compartment and need to be removed each time I want to close it.

These are reasons the Power Jolt adapter, with its flush, space conserving profile, is so endearing to me.

Bottom line, you need to have the data pins shorted for it to charge AC. Whether you do that in the adapter itself (the myTouch 3g I linked to) or in the cord (Power Jolt [or any other] + Naztech cable) is up to you.

I had a pile of USB cords sitting around anyway, and I can use any of them with the myTouch 3g adapter just fine. No real estate issue with my car, but I do understand what you're talking about. I'll keep the Power Jolt + Naztech in mind for when I do end up replacing the car this year, so thanks for that.

It's unfortunate, and a bit silly that we have to have a thread like this just to figure out how to properly charge our phones. Ah well :)

That's initially how I felt, but bought one anyway knowing I probably wouldn't get around to ripping open an adapter to solder connections. And it's unfortunate that the cable is a bit stiff and cheap feeling. But it does work, and it's not coiled, so I keep one in my car for charging and dash-mount nav duties.

I'm a bit concerned with the stiff and cheap stiff feeling comments.
hmmm....

how long is the cable?

griffin powerjolt showed up yesterday, no dice.
It charges as USB.

Looks like I'll be trying to open that and a few Scosche chargers up this weekend to try and solder them.
Anyone figured out an easy way to open the powerjolt?

on a side note: I didn't realize how tiny that thing is, it's pretty awesome.

I don't what the deal is with the powerjolt, if there are different "versions" or what mine shows A/C :/

I recently did some homework on this same topic and can provide you with a little amplifying info. What you're looking for is a charger that provides a "dedicated charging port" which is currently defined in the Battery Charging Specification Rev 1.2 found here: http://www.usb.org/developers/devclass_docs/BCv1.2_011912.zip.

There are two important items to look for: rated output of the charger (e.g. 5V / 1.0A) AND that the data pins (D+ and D-) have a MAXIMUM resistance of 200ohms (RDCHG_DAT) between them. Note that a dead short is perfectly acceptable.

However, most of the adapters I looked at don't provide this kind of information in the specs on retailers' websites. In a lot of cases you will have to resort to reading reviews to find out whether the charger will give you the full rated power. I can tell you from experience that this charger I recently bought does show up as an AC source when charging my gnex: 1000mA Car Cigarette Powered USB Adapter/Charger (DC 12V/24V) - Free Shipping - DealExtreme. It did take a couple weeks for it to make it overseas.

Would it work for my Samsung Galaxy SII? I'm talking about the 1000mA Car Cigarette Powered USB Adapter/Charger (DC 12V/24V).

Thank you!
