Help Disabling data network while on WiFi

I recently bought a GS2 and was wondering how do you completely kill the connection to the data network? I am on WiFi 95% of the time and have found that even when I am on it, the 4G activates and does whatever mystery downloading. For example yesterday I was home all day and had 16m of data move on cell data all the while I was on WiFi at home. I've gone to Wireless & network > Mobile networks and disabled Use packet data but it keeps turning on by itself. I have a couple of apps, Onava and even the GO Switch widget to disable it but it keeps turning on. There must be something running that is activating it? Any ideas?? I must say it was much easier with my POS iPhone to kill the mobile network and as much as I loathe that phone it was never as shady as some of the background stuff that happens on this handset. I have a task manager widget running and one minute it is cleared and the next it is packed with stuff running. Frustrating as heck..

I personally use Juice Defender. The purpose of this app is to turn off the data when your phone is locked so it doesn't drain the battery. There's other settings to the plus edition of the app (that's the one I own) and it allows you to completely turn off the data while on WiFi. Works for me and it saves your battery all at the same time.

you have to go to your network settings and disable packet data... btw on my phone.. btw when you are connected to a wifi network data should automatically disable .. mine does that out of the box

If you want to turn off data rymanh has it right. If you use Juice Defender then it will manage everything for you. I bought Juice Defender Ultimate after using the free version for 2 months. It is worth it, the battery lasts much longer.

I've done that but it seems like something (probably one of T Mobs apps) keeps re-enabling it. I never had this issue with my iPhone, when I turned off the mobile network it was off. I will try Juice Defender and cross my fingers. Thanks for the info.

I don't use Data very much so i usually keep it off and juice defender does little for me because of this.. I have tried it and it will take some time to set up and get it the way you like.. but when you do, it will be a very helpful app

when my phone connects to a wifi network, the 4g icon completely disappears.

I had the same issue on my Wife's Galaxy S2. Every night at exactly 12AM and randomly in the evenings it would download at least 60MB of Data over Cellular network even though it was connected to the Wifi at home. Within the first month she had used 2GB of data. To fix this I installed an app called AutomateIT. By using this App I now have her Data usage down to about 500MB.

Basically using this App you can setup rules such as:

When WIFI is Disconnected, Enable Packet Data
When WIFI is Connected, Turn Off Packet Data
At 5PM, Enable Wifi, Turn Off Packet Data

You can also schedule just about any task based on just about any condition. Just by using these settings, I found that battery life on the Galaxy S2 was also increased.

I use no jd or task killer.
Also on Wi/fi 90%.
Packet always on.
While on wi/fi, the network status bars kind of lope around a little, from 1 to 3 bars, and the 4g connected icon will fade in and out esp if I move around the house.
I bang on this thing, surfin', text, words w/friends, downloading and uninstalling apps constantly, netflix, utube, etc, etc for 18 - 22 hours every single day, just pushing and multi-tasking this thing all out, trying to find it's limit, never have...
And I only use about 250mb of my monthly allowance of 2gig, so I know the network indicators in the status bar mean nothing when on wi/fi.
Battery keeps up with me pretty darn good, maybe charge once every 12 hours or so.
Everything is auto switch off network when wifi is clicked on. One click, and that's it.
I'm no techie, but I think everything I've said is accurate.

kies recently upgraded my firmware and since then data auto starts every time I lose wifi. Does anybody know how to disable it completely, I've tried all the usual setting disables.

How about Quick Settings? I use it on my OV.
I've been looking into a SGS2 for a while now; is there a way to remap the top drop down controls? I never use bluetooth on anything and it'd be nice to have data on/off up there.
