Root ZTE U960 ROM Discussion

guys -- i just saw this phone, seems like so advance compared to u960, might be worth a shot, no real pricing yet though...
Google Translate

There is already the lenovo A750 based on the new mtk CPU, surely will be an huge upgrade if you compare it with the standard Chinese clone, or with some cheap brand offering from samsung, motorola and LG.

I dubt they will be any better than the U960.

In the best scenario just a good alternative.

I only flashed your ROM.
The baseband for SIM 2 is U960V1.0.1B13W.

This is only a row written in the build.prop file, not the real version of the installed baseband.

On some android phones the baseband is updated when the rom is updated, in the U960 it isn't.

You have to install it manually via a different procedure.

I thought it was for SIM 1 and not advised for newbies so I didn't do it...

There are two updated baseband, one included in my initial package, and one released later that I posted later.

I said it's an optional upgrade, following the standard rule "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", but if you have connectivity problems, like you said, upgrade it is worth.

The instructions in english are included on the latest I uploaded, you need an XP 32bit machine to upgrade it.

I tried to modify the boot.img to add the init.d support. I tried to unpak and repack the boot.img, but after repacking it was't work. The U960 freeze and I must take off the battery to reboot the device. I think that the problem is that repacking with the "cpio" the header of the ramdisk, it become different from the original, also repacking the original ramdisk whitout modify nothing, and trying to use the repacked boot.img with fastboot the teminal freeze.
Had someone tried to modify unpacking and repacking the ramdisk with success??? How is the right option to repack the boot.img??
Thank.

Yes, it is the kitchen, with some adjustement, that we used to try the boot.img unpack and repack, but the problem, we think, is in the repacking with the cpio ... (to repack the newramdisk and then the boot.img we must use linux ... the repack is not working on win)
If you repack the boot.img-kernel and the original boot.img-ramdisk.gz with the mkbootimg to a boot.img it is working, but if you try to repack the ramdisk with cpio to a newramdisk.gz and then the newramdisk.gz and the boot.img-kernel to a new boot.img, this one is not working ... :thinking:

I tried It briefly (after some adjustments) I noticed that the included mkbootimage.exe doesn't accept the --pagesize command.

The line should be, more or less

mkbootimg --kernel boot.img-kernel --ramdisk ramdisk-new.gz --cmdline "console=ttyMSM1 androidboot.hardware=qcom" --pagesize=4096 --output boot.img

Not sure if this is the problem, but the first thing to do is surely to get a new windows executable for mkbootimage or use the linux version.

Hi The Solutor, the line is the similar to that we used, but the problem is already repacking the ramdisk with the cpio before repacking the boot.img... but Topogigi has found an other kernel that is working... when we have a few minute to spend we will try to modify the ramdisk to see if it is possible to have better perfomance, then we will tell all the news to you... Bye;)

I'm searching for the kernel source code ...
I wrote to ZTE asking for the kernel source code of the ZTE U960 but they answered thet they can't provide it now.
So I wrote that I think that the kernel source code need's to be on ZTE website because it's a GPL requirement! Why the kernel source code of the ZTE U960 it's not available but the kernel source code of the other phone like V55-Blade-N860 ecc. it's?
Is there someone that know if there is the kernel source code of the ZTE U960 around???

Phone just arrived ...... taken on Tao Bao intermediated MeBuyy

The phone is fully unlocked and already rooted !!!

The girl who followed me (cindy) was very kind and extremely available to all my questions and were able to not overpay for the Customs.

In the final package I paid almost 310 euros (+ 350usd shipped with UPS customs almost 40 euros).

Now the price is falling on Eto, but I think it will be lower even on Taobao. I should have saved almost 40 euros compared to the price of Eto (when I ordered it), it's okay ......

if interested, this is cindy's email and msn address : cindymebuy at hotmail.com

After a few days of testing I decided to publish the modified rom.
The main changes are:
- Enabled adb unsecure;
- Enabled init.d (you can then use V6SuperCharger for example);
- Added battery indicator circle with decreases-increases in step 1%;
- Removed Chinese applications;
- Changed back to original bootlogo ZTE logo.

The Rom performs a wipe of the phone, so it is recommended to perform a backup with Titanium or similar if you need to have a successive restore.

Some BUGs discovered on U960

1. USSD on Sim1 mostly not work
2. SMS from Operator or AD which has no sender number and has only name not possible to get on phone
3. all SMS received are shown in international format +374..... etc. and it doesn't show the name of Sender , only number , even if sender is in your address book.
4. 3G video call function is absent ....

Any ideas ?:thinking:

2. If you install Handcent SMS you will be able to recive those SMS messages. Works for me.

3. Names show up for me, but I have all contacts with countryside.
