Which should I get?

I really hate to post a new thread that has probably been answered in bits and pieces across the forums, but I don't have time to spend a few hours browsing (Hotel internet is expensive).

I recently walked into a T-Mobile store which had the G1 in stock, and the sales clerk told me that the G1 is now running the exact same OS version of android as the new HTC Magic/MyTouch. Is this true? Last I researched the two, I found that the G1 used the outdated software. Did something change in the last few months?

So my question is, after that somewhat of a tangent, should I get a G1 or should I go with waiting for the new MyTouch?

I really like the built-in keyboard on the G1, but the awkward size and shape means it doesn't really sit well in my hand.

I've also heard there are differences in the system specs. Which is better and how?

I actually posted a similar thread a while back, where the common consensus was that the HTC Magic was going to be a much better phone. Has anyhting happened to change this?

Sorry to just ask you guys for information, but like I mentioned above, I'm working off limited internet access. Thanks for any help.

Ok, yes they run the same version of Android the G1 got an OTA (over the air) update months ago... as for specs the mytouch has a bigger battery and more ram but no physical keyboard.......

More ram can really make a difference and it has more internal memory. You may think that that doesn't matter because it has expandable memory but you can't install apps to the sd card. That is definitely a major flaw with android.. hopefully it will change soon though you can do it anyway if you root. Personally, I wouldn't want to risk bricking my phone while still on contract but maybe that's just me.

Rooting your phone is really simple and I have my apps on my SD and have over 300 on my phone and I run a G1 although it is rooted...

Ok, so it is the same software.

So the only differences are the more RAM and more battery?

Personally, I could give up the keyboard for a longer battery.

Anyone else?

Also, is there a reason to get the 'developer' edition? Can rooting basically do the same thing?

if you root you can put the dev software on the phone no point in paying for a dev phone if you can root what you have...

I've got the g1 and I do really prefer a physical keyboard but if I were you I would go with the my touch. More ram and better battery life out weigh the keyboard in my book. I haven't looked too much into it because I have a g1 but I've read that installing the hero rom is very straight forward on the my touch which would be a very big plus as well.
