Help Notifications and charging issues

ok guys is my second day with the phone and wanted two now couple of things. first is does the phone has any type of notifications lights since with previous phones at least it notified me when the phones battery was low and second my phone wont keep a charge while plugged in while im using it is this normal or is there something wrong going on with my phone? thanks for your help.

No led lights that i've seen and yes, the phone burns that much power. You probably should get some battery saving software or an extended battery. I'm gonna do both. With 2x battery, name of app, I can probably get two days with ones charge if you do the things it recommends with light usage. I hate i'm not able to use the phone how it was meant to be thou. Not sure how it will perform with GPS since in have this software now. Could only get 3 hours outta the phone with GPS plugged in charging on a 4.5 hour trip. Yeah, I was in a bind

The Marquee is deff. a Batery Hog! LoL. I understand it though, with some of the features it offers. Once a custom ROM comes along I am sure it will help with using the phone to its full potential. Until then, I bought an 1800mAh battery with charging dock. It allows me to not only put my original battery on it to charge, but can plug in USB to charge my phone at the same time If need be. And not to mention a must have car charger for those long trips or use of GPS. I found both accessories on Amazon.com. Just my suggestion though. I couldn't find a higher capacity battery that would fit the Marquee and still fit with the original Backing but, switching out batteries is a breeze if need be.

I know the the screen has some to do with it, but not as much as the processor. But with the heat this thing makes, its like its always running full throttle and doing it inefficiently. We need a kernel to under volt and maybe turn the processor down some for the sake of battery life

Yes, I'm able to use anything on the phone while it is plugged in (USB or AC) and it will still charge up.

Does this only happen while you're using the phone when it's charging, or when it's left alone as well?

plug it in (usb or ac) and let the music play with the screen of or using the phone such as checking email or surfing around and the charge just depletes. when i leave it alone it charges normally dont know if this is normal for the phone since with my thunderbolt that has never happened.

The 3g radio is so bad that my phone will overheat while on a charger in the car using pandora. Once the battery and phone get hot it shows a warning message and no longer charges, eventually dieing.

alright guys time for some conclusions first there is no led notifications thats a real shame and second it seems that im not the only one having issues with the phone dying while plugged in. it seems that there is an issue with the radio since i did notice that my phone over heats while charging and using any type of data on the phone such as streaming music or surfing the web hopefully there would be a software fix soon. thanks again for your help and see you guys around.

No LED is definitely annoying, but its an easy fix with an app called Missed Message Flasher, which you can find in the market for free. You have to play with it a bit, but it works great.

In addition to the missed message flasher app imfm mentioned there is another called NO LED (can be found HERE) & works very well. Both make up for the lack of notification lights.

For everyone having the issue of the phone dying while plugged in problem I have a question:
Are you using the stock charger & stock cable provided with the phone?? If not, this could have an effect here.

For best charging performance be sure to USE THE STOCK CHARGER.

There is a thread over at Android Central that can be found HERE & explains a little further about different cables with this phone. Very interesting read.

After reading the link I installed Battery Monitor Widget & found that some of my aftermarket chargers & cables I owned were not working well with this phone. Once I determined which ones worked best, I uninstalled the app.

There are phones out there w/ better Battery life. The battery life of coarse depends on the user but with a few easy tweaks (shutting off things when not needed/being used) 18-24 hours of battery life is possible.

I applied most (not all) of the tips & I am consistently able to get 18-24 hours of pretty steady use without having to recharge. I always keep a charger nearby anyway.

Brightness - If you keep the phone at 100% brightness, your battery will drop quickly. If you can adjust it & keep it lower it may help improve your Battery life.

Keeping the Data Sync, GPS, Bluetooth and Wifi are on (even they aren't being used) will drain the battery. Shutting them off when not in use will help improve Battery life. There is a free power control widget that comes with the phone but for more customization options, the EXTENDED CONTROLS App is recommended.

Apps such as BATTERY MONITOR WIDGET, JUICE DEFENDER, & TITANIUM BACKUP are great & do their job well.

I read the thread you posted the link to regarding tweaking battery life, and I'm wondering how you are getting 18-24 hours on a single charge just by turning off those settings. Your phone is not rooted, and you didn't adjust the build.prop file? I have all of those settings off as well, and juice defender, and I am not getting more than 4 to maybe 7 hours of use. On standby alone, juice defender does help. However, I have my phone because I use it, but I wouldn't call it heavy usage right now. I am not playing games or using that many apps, because of the battery life. I do text a bit, but that's mostly it. With texting, phone calls totaling under 20 minutes or even no phone calls at all, and using the web to just check something here and there, my phone is dead in a few hours. I keep brightness between 15 and 30. Is your 18-24 hour charge mostly by keeping your phone in standby, or do you use it to text/browse the web/make calls/use apps?

I am not a high tech, 3d gamer type but I condiser myself a casual, average daily phone user. Throughout the day I call, text, occasionally check email/go online, facebook, twitter, etc. Only turning on the apps manually when I want to use them. Nothing is running in the background....ever.

I am NOT on BOOST but on SPRINT but I am pretty sure they are for the most part the same exact phone. My phone IS rooted. In fact, I am one of the 1st to own this phone & was the one (along w/ hoovhartid & tcaudill01) that figured out how to root & unroot this phone successfully. I did not adjust build.prop file. I have not had to remove or freeze any of the stock apps. I have not installed CWM. I have a few apps installed & the ones I do, again I have them set manually. Remember, since most apps default are set to run in the background the settings have to be changed by the user.

For you only to be getting 4-7 hours battery life, I can guarantee you either:

1) HAVE an app or app(s) running in the background
2) are in a poor service area. As your battery life could be affected based on your location if you are in a low service area (ie, could be a Radio issue)

I noticed on one of your other posts that you are tethering/using a wi-fi hot spot. Please note that doing so even in the best service area will dramatically affect your phones battery life. You can't turn your phone into a wi-fi hot spot without having your phone plugged in & expect great battery performance.

Anyways, what other apps have you installed? Reply with your phones breakdown.

Experience the same issue, was never a problem using while charging with my transform ultra. Can't wait for a kernel or rom to address this. Also phone runs absolutely smooth while charging through usb

I do wonder if it makes a difference whether you're on Sprint or Boost. I had been thinking it could be the reception. Cell standby is always the highest item listed under battery usage. The reception at home fluctuates from 1 bar to full. However, even when I'm in an area where I get good reception all the time, the battery does still drain quickly.

I have been trying to decide if I should root or not. I haven't felt the need to root any of my phones until now. This may be a dumb question, but would rooting erase everything on my phone? Would I need to use Titanium Backup or the like in order to root (and keep everything)?

I have a few widgets: two power toggles (widgetsoid), a calendar app, one for the weather (without any animations), and google search.

I don't tether without my charger generally, I know it's a huge battery drainer. I just like to make sure that my phone has that capability, and tried it out to make sure it works. The poor battery life I refer to is always without tethering involved.

I do always have apps running in the background. How would I go about setting it so that they don't? Would that cause issues of any sort? I was under the impression that killing the processes made it so that launching that process or app again ate up more process power and was worse than just leaving everything alone to be managed by the OS. I'm assuming root is involved for that.

Looking at running services, 254MB are being used, with 67MB free. Launcher Pro, Android core apps, settings, and Widgetlocker seem to be using the most here, with ~20MB being used by each. Swype is using 27MB.

I do have a lot of apps, I'm a bit of an appaholic. (So far) I have about 164. When I exit apps that would want to check for messages or the like in the background, I try to exit completely. Checking to see what is currently running in the background (and I haven't used any apps yet today other than the browser and text messaging), I have:

voice search
wifi manager
data counter widget (I have never installed the widget)
yahoo messenger
car locator
messaging
seekdroid
pulse
calendar
clock
realcalc
accuweather.com
google search
engadget
widgetsoid
qik video
speaktoit assistant

Most of those I rarely use or run. I have a social chatting app that isn't listed under running but that occasionally will notify me of a new message, so must be there somewhere.

Thanks for the response well about the stock charger, it charges my thunderbolt better than my marquee while in use and that's both in ac or usb. Another thing I replaced my marquee due to a blowned speaker and with the new marquee is the same issue phone will overheat while been plugged in to charger while in use causing the phone not to charge and eventually dieing.

One final note while writing this note my phone went from 33% to 27% while plugged in to ac

I don't think that's a dumb question at all. When I rooted it did not erase anything. Originally I rooted my phone strictly so I could tether. You can see my very easy guide on how to root/unroot this phone HERE

Well, I don't think the power toggles or calendar app (unless its set to sync online) are causing battery drain but the weather app possibly could be. Especially if it is using your GPS location & depending how often it "automatically" checks the weather. This could be a factor here...

I would start by going into each of your apps settings to make sure anything "automatic" is set to "manual". The thing is, I was using the phone for a week before I installed any apps, and the battery performed just as poorly. It's actually my second Marquee; I returned the first one to see if the unit itself was just a fluke and if buying a new one would fix anything.

So, I do have a lot of apps, and some are bound to be running in the background, but I don't actually notice a huge difference between performance pre-apps and post. For things like messenger, if I am not using it, I make sure to sign out, so it's not constantly checking for updates in the background. The first thing I do when I download any app is explore all of the options to turn off any automatic updating or to set check intervals at the longest maximum time period.

The weather widget and my email are the main two things that I allow to update, I would say. But I don't think those should cause such a difference as to drop my performance from 18 hours to 4-6. I am leaning towards it being an issue with the phone? or the software? that causes the phone to be in constant search of a signal. Even when I get full bars, if I use the phone for a little bit, the battery drops very steadily. Maybe I will try to root my phone so that I can try to tweak that file, but otherwise I guess I am giving up on having this phone perform normally. Hopefully LG or Boost will release an update or fix soon, which I doubt, or they come out with a better phone which I can switch to.

I ended up rooting my phone just to see what else I could do, and installed SetCPU. I wanted to see what would happen if I set the speed to a low setting. I didn't notice a huge difference, but it did make my phone much more laggy and slow, and so wasn't worth it. Might still try tweaking that settings file, but other than that, I guess it comes down to either being a phone / software fault, or a combination of that and a problem with cell reception, or the phone overacting by searching for a signal way too much. I wonder how much of a difference a custom ROM might make.
