Anyone have any of the Logitech Harmony universal remotes?

Found a good deal on a 650 and thinking of picking one up. Just looking for personal reviews/opinions from the AF crew.

I just set up the 700 a few weeks ago. It was a piece of cake. The hardest part was reading the manufacturer / model number off the label on my wall mounted TV. Does the 650 have the lcd screen?

edit: I should have mentioned that you should shop around. Everywhere I looked the 700 was for like $130 or so, I found it on Amazon for $90.

So crazy that someone would be so nuts like that. So, considering the weather, what nutty activity are you planning today?

I'm really tempted to ditch work this afternoon and have a nice lunch on the pier and maybe walk around for a while. But it's getting cloudy so maybe not.

I got the basic 300 a few months ago because I lost the remote to my WDTV. It handles my TiVo, TVs, and WDTV flawlessly. It's great! The newfangled ones are nice, with the touch screen and things, but way too expensive for me for just a remote.

This one doesn't have the touchscreen, just a little 1.5X1.5 inch screen that reminds me of my first color screened phone.:D

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I would update you folks on my experience, since the Harmony's came up again, here goes.

When I added the blueray to the home entertainment mix not one of the three native remotes worked with all three devices. With the wife, three kids, and a dog having to keep track of three remotes in order to do simple tasks like watch tv, a dvd, or dvr was too much. I read online as much as I could b/c Ive been down the $30 find your code route before and only ever had 90% functionality (so 10% of the time I would have to grab the native remote).

So when I researched, I found that the Harmony remotes had over 5,000 supported devices and all I had to do was choose Sony and put in the model number (on my PC no less) and all of the appropriate buttons on the remote were configured correctly. Mint, ten minutes out of the package and I could do everything with one remote.

I plugged it in to give it a full charge overnight and kind of left it alone for a few days (I was doing my guide homework). I then went onto my computer and played with the "actions" I think they call it. I went through a few wizards and within 5 minutes I had set up:

  1. Watch TV (TV on, set to HDMI1, Blueray on, set to Audio, Cable on)
  2. Watch Movie (TV on, set to HDMI2, Blueray on, set to DVD function, Cable off)
  3. Watch Netflix (TV on, set to HDMI2, Blueray on, set to Ntflix, Cable off)
I also set up favorite channels (for my 4yr old) that display in the LCD (not touchscreen, four soft buttons on the side) so he can go to his favorite channels without having to click 107, or 130, or 753 (Hub, Boomerang, and Nick Jr HD for those in central MA).

All set, hook the remote to the PC and sync it up, wow. I still have not figured out how it knows that the TV is already on, say when I am watching TV vs it being off, when I hit Watch Movie. And cycling the different inputs on the devices is cool too. I swear it uses some funky voodoo to do it.

I would have been happy with a single remote that allows me to control 3 devices. But this really does so much more and for me was worth the $90. I just use the remote without having to think of what device I'm controlling, it has just abstracted that entire layer out of it. I sit down, press watch tv, and everything goes.

The 650 is here for $30 if anyone is interested. I might pick one up then since I have TV, soundbar, XBMC setup and cable box. Would be nice to consolidate remotes considering the soundbar remote is SO tiny.

Oh, and I should have mentioned in my epic review, I think the 650 does most of what the 700 does. I just wanted the screen for my 4yr old to find his channels. I put the channel logos in for icons so he knows what channel he wants.

Loving the dog stories. I think Cesar said that there's no such thing as a bad dog, just a human that doesn't understand what the dog wants.

That said, I think some dogs ARE possessed...

Good Morning everyone. So need to vent, one of our dogs is driving me crazy. Sunday she chewed up a 2 week old set of stride rite sandals after my daughter took them off outside without our knowledge. Then last night, a pair of new shoes for my youngest arrived, my wife took them out of the box, set them on the nightstand in the kids room, and gave him a bath. By the time she got out, a shoe was missing, and sure enough, destroyed. Less than an hour after taking it out of the box, and never worn. $100 worth of shoes in 5 days. (Don't get me started on my wife's insistence on buying $50 pairs of shoes for young children... ;))

Antimony, the only thing I can suggest is getting the dog enough chew toys to keep it satisfied. If she/he goes near a shoe, use the "switcheroo" conditioning. What I mean is tell her "no", take the shoe and replace it with the chew toy. You might even have to "set up" the scenario to practice the conditioning (that way it's a controlled situation, instead of waiting for her to find a shoe and hoping you'll catch her). I would spend at least 30 minutes a day training to start. Use food tidbits for rewards if that works for your dog (I find most are food motivated, until you can switch to just praise reward).

I have 2 shepherd mixes (1 German, 1 Belgium Malinois-the Mali was saved from Hurricane Katrina @ 6 wks old-yeah thunderstorms are a blast at our house /sarcasm). Anyway, BOTH dogs were cheers (although not fixated on shoes, we did lose some). The only, and I mean ONLY chew toys I buy are KONGS! In fact I prefer the black KONGS over the red ones (it depends on the size of the dog & how hard a cheer they are-the black are designed for heavy chewers/German shepherds). To prevent jealousy, I buy 2 of every toy. They have the regular KONGS, Kong bones, balls and treat balls. (this does not, however, prevent my Mali from finding all the toys, placing them in a pile between her paws and chewing on only 1 so the German has none, brat!)

That's what I would try in order to break the habit. Unfortunately, it takes work and stubborn determination all the while maintaining the patience of a saint!

As for when you're not home, I'm not sure what to say... we have crate trained since adoption, so ours are crated while we're gone.

Good luck to you, I know how frustrating and upsetting it can be. I had a cat that liked to chew phone and small power cords years ago! Lol, SHE was crazy!

Sorry for the long post, animal behavior is sort of a hobby with me. Please let us know how it goes!

Yeah, mine are shih-tzus. I think one of the hardest head breeds out there.

LMBO!!! I'm sure if my Maine Coon could figure out how to get up there, he'd be all over this one! Oh, that's the best laugh I've had all day! Thank you for the visual! Bahahahahhha!

Cheri

Yeah, it was really hilarious. It was very Garfield/Odie.

Our youngest dog is a Shih-tzu. Extremely affectionate, clownish, great sense of humor. But very stubborn, lol.

She was house-broken in less than 2 weeks and hasn't had any "accidents" since she was just a few months old, and she knows how to sit, but she is unfortunately smart enough to know that she doesn't have to listen to you to get what she wants.

I have a Logitech Harmony One. I got it a couple of years ago. It's nice, with the touch screen (even has a picture slideshow mode...lol). But, it seems to be a bit sensitive to impact. My son had a habit of setting it down roughly on the table, and a couple of times I had to pull the battery. But, it's a great remote nonetheless (I had one of the other Harmony models, and it worked fine too...gave it to my parents when I got my current one.)

I highly recommend these!

I don't have the Harmony but I always start the day with a remote battery pull. It's a must with a young one!

My dog, Sunny (who now lives with my Aunt Stephanie, because I have a small apt and he is a big Golden), when he was a pup (1999), would get into the pantry! We'd find loaves of bread buried in the couch.

Fast forward and he's about 2yrs old at the time...

We had set some salmon out to thaw and gone to church. For some reason when we got home we had forgotten that we had planned for a salmon dinner (who knows how a family of 6 people forget something like that?). A couple days go by and we all start to smell an awful "aroma" of dead fish...and I mean DEAD!

The search begins! After 10 minutes my cousin Douglass says "Oh no!" The salmon had "defrosted" in a nook of the love seat in the family room! It was DISGUSTING! I put on some gloves and dry heaved that fish all the way to the outside trash.

Sunny is now the most chill 13yr old (91yr old) dog you have ever met! Even in his wise age he is still very spry and vocal. Still protects my Aunt's house with a fierce bark. But seriously, sweet as they come. :)

Did I mention I have the day off? Son is napping and daddy is testing LK 2.5 stable with extended battery. Got 4hrs, 10mins screen on with standard battery over 18hrs (battery was at 91% when I started that cycle) in my last test. Still running the 4.0.4 Rooted ROM.

Stigy, I had a Logitech Harmony One remote... bought it from Amazon when we got the new 3D system. And for basic functions, it's a very capable device and I think you'll enjoy it. HOWEVER:

With an Internet-connected 3D system, there are simply too many functions that the Harmony One wasn't able to control. We were always swapping remotes... so - figures I - if I'm still swapping remotes, what good is the Harmony One?

Sent it back on the 59th day of the 60-day return window.

It all depends on your equipment: If you have a complex system, Harmony One just doesn't have the controls on it to do much more than basic stuff. If you have a standard setup though, I think you'll get years of good use out of it :)
