I never owned one but I have played with Iphones. They are nice and I love the fact that you can customize app draw name, service provider name, custom sliders, i even seen a Knicks symbol as the signal bar, make ur own icons in the status bar... ( my friend has The Dharma Initiative symbol )lol

I always try to out shine them boys and Im on forums and they post a screen shot and Im blown away. I absolutely love my N1.Overall I thin its better, But do you think we will ever be able to do this with android?

if ur seeing this twice, yes i did post this on xda lol

Uh.... an iPhone more customizable than Android? I almost spit out my soda! But seriously... the customization you are speaking of is only possible if you jailbreak your iPhone. Android is more customizable out of the box... then if you root, the possibilities are endless.

I use the glass status bar as well. But I would love it if I cud change some things to whatever I wanted. How do u like the glass status bar.... I think its dope.

Change things to whatever you wanted?
You can't even do this on the iPhone. You said about SBSettings and various themes for icons and such but this is still limited to what people actually mod for you and not exactly what you want.

I only slightly customized my iPhone as I'm not really into themes and the like but I would imagine that if people wanted to theme Android that it's pretty straight forward.
I'm sure that all the files would be available in a resource file to edited at your will. Then you really can change what ever you want.

i was mainly talking about just writing things like ur name and service provider.... honestly thats all i really wanna do. I think its rather cool

Does anyone post at xda? If not i know why....lol they are a bunch of sensitive #$%@%^ . I post the same thing there and they bash me and close my thread. I know how forums work, maybe they thought I was an iphone lover. Sensitive mods are there.

SweeterHome.

It's this theme. When you've downloaded and installed the app, you'll need a data connection active to search the theme database. Look for "Squared." And I agree, it looks very neat. WinPhone7-ish.

Xda-developers forums have a low bullshit tolerance policy. Threads like yours don't contribute, don't provoke discussions, and in general it deserved to be locked.

You got that right Grainysand... but they do have some nice mods posted on their forums. They're worth checking out just make sure you do research before asking anything.

This thread is backwards... it should be on an iPhone forum somewhere entitled: Will we ever be able to customize like Android?

I second that thought Rusty.

Most of those customizations you cite are not available on the stock iPhone and require that the phone be jailbroken. A stock N1 is highly customizable in comparison to a stock iPhone and with a rooted N1, you can basically do whatever the heck you want with the thing...

No offense guys, but I really don't think Buck Shot posted his question hoping that all of you would reassure him that the N1 is better. I have had the same issue with the Android OS since it was released. Even when you do root it, there seems to be very little support for all the tinkering that normal phone users (not developers) want to accomplish. Android users with that kind of attitude are what have kept me from buying an Android phone. Every time someone asks how to do something that they like on another device, most people say, "Oh, don't worry about it dude. You have a SnapDragon processor," or some ridiculous comment like that. Don't get me wrong, I have had high hopes for Android all along, but there is always something missing.

For a simple comparison: Consider a 500HP Ford Mustang comes out in 2010 with all the bells and whistles. However, its 0-60 time is slower than a 4-5 year old stock V6 Mustang and it doesn't handle as well. Whether or not it looks better and has all the cool features, the older model has more functionality and is more exciting to drive. This is exactly how I have felt about my unlocked iPhone 2G for the past 3 years, compared to the newest and best Android devices.

Also, I can't fathom buying the newest, best Android device, knowing that in just a few months the manufacturers, suppliers, nor T-Mobile will work on updates to make the device better. I commend Apple for making updates in a timely manner and their continued efforts to make all updates applicable to their oldest devices. The same can't be said for Android devices.

Funny, even before rooting I had no problem locating home replacement apps that let me customize plenty. You know that google thing? I hear it's a pretty good search engine, what.

Android's an OS for people not satisfied with Apple's proprietary, dumbed-down garbage. Said people generally have the power of, well, google. Even then, people who ask non-stupid questions in a manner that doesn't scream "HURR I'M A DURR" do get their questions answered. "How can I customize Android like an iPhone?" qualifies as "dumb" of the highest degree. You happy with your toddler-level, stupidity-friendly device that lets you do squat-all to tinker with it, you go ahead. Leave us to our complex ones.

Oh look, it's another trolling Mactard. What a surprise.

What's your damage? An OS update one month after release seems pretty speedy to me. Also, LOL LOL. Remember the lack of copy-paste? No MMS? No 3G support? Shine on, buddy.

my thoughts:
-often apple makes you pay for such updates
-Android is updated way more frequently than the Iphone software. We are at 2.1 in a year and a half of existence, and already we have some features (real navigation, multitasking for any application, etc.) that Apple still doesn't have.

First, I'd like to start out by saying I am an Apple fanboy by no means. The only Apple product I've ever owned is my iPhone, which I bought second-hand. I have tried to use a MacBook maybe once or twice, and could not stand it.
Second, you missed all of my points completely. My point about updates is more than valid, whether you choose to admit it or not. For example: Samsung Behold II, released towards the end of 2009 with Android 1.5. Why does one of the newest Android devices come with such an outdated software version? Again, all updates from Apple have been applicable to previous devices. Also, I never claimed the iPhone was superior in all of its features. Personally, I think it was an EPIC FAIL that Apple released the iPhone without so many "standard" features.
Third, like so many others, you failed to answer the OP's question. And what's so "dumb" about the OP's question? It's a feature that he obviously likes and would like to have on his phone. It doesn't mean that you have to like it too. Isn't the purpose of forums to discuss with others and help them?
Finally, I did not come here to debate which phone is better. Android has a lot of potential and is a good OS, but no one seems ready to make it great.

Just want to clear up one little issue here. The updates to the OS are manufacturer specific meaning that it's up to Samsung, HTC, Motorola, etc to grab the latest update from Google and push it to their devices. Google merely releases the updates, which have been outright excellent, then the phone manufacturers have to put their little spin on it (Sense UI, Motoblur, TouchWiz) that's why you don't see updates for specific devices. The N1 is the exception here because it's pretty much being maintained by Google, not HTC but it will probably start to see some lag in updates compared to newer phones as well just because everyone wants a piece of the "exclusive" pie (even if it is only temporarily exclusive). That's why we now see the HTC Desire (not in the US) as well as the upcoming Cliq XT utilizing Flash 10.1 and not the N1.

Because Android's adopted by different manufacturers and it's not up to Google, but to said manufacturers, to roll out updates. Especially when, such as in the case of the Behold 2, there's a custom UI laid on top of vanilla Android. Now, if all phones used vanilla Android and the manufacturers signed an agreement with Google that goes along the line of "Okay, big G, we're going to hand over total software control of our handsets to you. You do the OTA updates or whatnot, please." Which isn't going to happen. Apple has control of iPhones because they're the only one who uses its OS. It'd be more rational to compare the iPhone to the N1, seeing that the N1's under Google's control completely.

The ninny showed up at XDA and asked the same question. Understand, on the xda-developers forums there are stickied thread in every sub-section with tutorials on how to do this, that, or that other thing. Including, wouldn't you know it, modifying the notification bar.

Buck Shot there are home screen apps and metamorph themes and junk that one could use to customize their android phone. I think that you shouldn't worry about what these iPhone users are doing with their phone, rather you should just focus on making yours even more ****ing awesome. You have a Nexus One man, it's ****ing awesome, you're awesome.
