Can I set up a SMTP mail client on my Hero?

I'm pretty new to the Android here and I just need a little nudge in the right direction I think. I have my gmail account set-up, and a hotmail account set up through the mail application, but I just got a job which provided me with my own email address. My boss gave me the information to set it up on my phone but under protocol, I only see POP, APOP, and IMAP. He told me the "smtp mail server" so I'm guessing I'm kind of missing something...

Do I need to use a different program to get my work emals? Did he not give me all the information I needed to set it up?

No you don't need any program to set it up use google and check out how to config an email thats smtp with your phone.

Not to sound like a dick, but think of what you just said...

I am on an Android system... if it were easy enough to "Google"the answer myself, dont you think I would have found it before i posted in this forum?

I still cant find the answer on the web. Can someone post a 'tutorial' type answer to my question please? I guess I should have been more specific when I originally posted looking for help.

From what you've already done, you don't even need a nudge -- you've successfully configured gmail & other than gmail clients.

IMAP & POP are incoming mail protocols.
SMTP is outgoing mail protocol.

You need this info for setup.
email address
login & password
IMAP or POP?
incoming mail server
outgoing mail server

For both incoming & outgoing mail servers, where available, I also select SSL/TLS, or data encryption. To work, it has to be supported on the mail server side, which it usually is, in my experience.

If this doesn't help, ask more questions & I'll try again.

edit to add: maybe all I really needed to say was: smtp server is outgoing mail server. oops.

Getting the client set up wasn't difficult, but remember, all my boss told me was, and I quote the conversation history,

host name
mail.whateverwhatever.ca
user name is your email address
smtp mail server
mail.whateverwhatever.ca
server port 995

Is that POP? Is that APOP? Is that IMAP? If all I have is the SMTP mail server, and I missing information?

And I'm also on a Android system to, and all I did was google my answer and it gave me directions on how to set it up. It's usually just smtp.whateverthelinkis.whatever ex(smtp.att.yahoo.com) and your pop will be pop.whateveryourlinkis.whatever ex(pop.att.yahoo.com) you have to manually configure it that's how I got my ATT email working, no promise that smtp.whateveryourlinkis.whatever will work I don't know how your address goes but if you tell me it I could give it a shot.

Bosses . But we're getting somewhere. Port 995 is POPS, or secure POP.

And settings for both incoming & outgoing/smtp servers for this account are
mail.whatever.ca

So... you'll select POP & now I'll get a little hand wavy on account of each mail client app is a little different in how it asks for what. If it asks for port, enter 995. If you see 110 (that's POP) & can change it, do it there. Possibility 3: selecting SSL/TLS will likely accomplish same.

Exactly where host name might come in hasn't come to me yet, but I think we're okay without it.

So I hit next, and I keep entering in the same information... now that I have finished set up, it saves, but still shows, "Warning. Server not responding most likely means we don't have everything right just yet. There's a small chance server is down, for maintenance say, but probably not. I've config'd, using gmail & k9 mail apps, but not email app yet. I'm going to take a quick look at it now.

Quick, not so much. I had some problems but eventually succeeded.

Showstopper for me was not selecting SSL under Security.

I had entered POP, incoming mail server, & 995 as port, but those alone weren't enough. It went into a checking state to infinity, & canceling didn't happen any too quickly either. Once I added Security, SSL, checking completed quickly.

If by chance you haven't selected SSL for Security, you might try that. If no difference, TLS, ...

If no Security choice works, then I wonder if we've got the right incoming server name. If host name looks like somethingelse.whatever.ca, there's a chance that's it. I like the looks of mail.whatever.ca better, but maybe...

I think we are getting somewhere... I found a typo my boss gave me in the server name so I changed that and i had to set the security type to ssl in order to get the incoming server to work. When I made the same changes in the outgoing server, it came up, "warning, your outgoing server doesnt support authentication" or whatever. What does that mean?

Excellent!

Now, for outgoing server settings,de-select Require Sign-in. You can do this in Email app, Menu, Accounts, select this account, Outgoing Server Settings.
