Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

Actually, dogs that are bred to fight are very specifically bred not to be aggressive towards humans. The owners have to be able to step in and break up the fight without being attacked, so any dog that shows human aggression is immediately killed, along with all of its litter and parents.

I don't have the statistics about labs bookmarked, and I'm not at home, so I'll have to find it later. On the subject though, part of the problem with bite statistics is that any mutt dog that bites tends to be labeled as a pit, whether or not it has any pit blood. All sorts of bulldogs, boxers, basically any dog with short ears and a big square head gets labeled as a pit as well. I've seen hounds get labeled as pit bulls when they're aggressive.

As for dogs that are bred to fight being so dangerous, try googling where Michael Vick's dogs are now. IIRC, one had to be put down for aggression. The other 40-some are happy, healthy family pets. Some of them are therapy dogs, quite a few have their canine good citizen certification.

If anything, it's a testament to this breed's forgiving, happy-go-lucky nature that so few of them ARE dangerous, considering the disgusting way we've treated them.

I don't mean to snipe or ninja Stigy, but I don't know if he's here to answer your question. Yes, Capta has a 1/4-20 hole in the bottom that threads onto ANY standard tripod. FINALLY we can video and time-lapse with Nexus from a stable platform! You just stick ANY smartphone on it - case and all - and then twist it off. Here's the link to a video on Capta:

Capta: Stick it, Lean it, Wrap it, Attach it. by UDS (Unique Design Solutions) — Kickstarter

Retail is coming soon! :D

Their "sticky" pad is supposed to be able to stick to everything and it took quite some force to get my GNex off the pad so I would pretty much say yes. They tested it with a BUNCH of phones and it held on tight.

There is a video on the Kickstarter page where he attaches it to a string on PVC pipe and spins it around with an iPhone attached, its that strong: Capta: Stick it, Lean it, Wrap it, Attach it. by UDS (Unique Design Solutions) — Kickstarter

Also yes there is a 1/4"-20 screw hole on the bottom for tripod attachment.

Thanks guys for the info! Awesome info. I'd love to be able to put Nessie on my regular tripod with something like this. When I did a time lapse video Christmas morning of my family opening presents, I had to rubberband my nexus to my tripod...looked quite sophisticated! :)

Whoo hoo! My first multiquote!

More leaks about the VZW shared family data plan.

Screenshot shows Verizon shared data plans are on the way

Can't wait! It will hopefully provide some savings for the four smartphones I currently carry.

I'm not doing anything to my account until they force me to - and by force I mean basically tell me my account is null and void. :p

I'm with BB. I'm keeping the grandfathered unlimited even though I barely reach 1GB a month now. Who knows what it will be like 12-24 months from now.

I love weather, it fascinates me for whatever reason. Once my kids grow up I think I will become a spotter for the weather service. I also have near the top of my wish list a high quality weather station. Obviously being in a coastal state, hurricanes get my attention the most. But I also will sit on my front porch as a thunderstorm goes through.

Nice to see another weather enthusiest here on AF :) I LOVE weather and clouds

So our youngest doggie was throwing up blood last night and we took her to the vet's immediately. She had been puking up bile a few times during the day, but it seemed to go away. Throughout all of it, she never was lethargic or grumpy; just her usual cheerful and smiley self. We figured she probably had a bug and it went away. But then she puked up a lot. No food, just bile and quite a bit of blood, which freaked us out of course.

The vet took a look and a stool sample (poor thing; they slid a long straw-like scooper up her butt) and turns out she has a massive amount of particularly nasty bacteria. We think she got it from some goose poop (they are running wild lately). Our complex also has large grounds where all the owners walk their dogs and don't bother to pick up after them (pigs). So who knows where it came from.

Now she's on antibiotics and a couple of other meds. We are slipping the antibiotics in her favorite no-no food, Fancy Feast (yes, for cats).

Damn geese. And idiot dog owners.

And as far as the Pit Bull discussion, not to start a flame war of course (ah, the good old days!). . .But I didn't mean to offend anyone. I just think that I've never heard of a golden retriever mauling a small child or killing one, while I've heard of several Pit-related deaths. Here in Chicago there was a major story about a month ago where a jogger was running through a park, was attacked by two loose Pits, and lost a leg. If it had been two golden retrievers which have very strong jaws, size, and strong teeth, I doubt the outcome would have been the same. It's a common fact that many breeders emphasize certain characteristics and minimize others, and you can tell after a few generations. And many breeders over the last few decades have bred Pits and other dogs for being aggressive. Unfortunately, dog fighting is still extremely popular (at least in Chicago), and those aggressive strains will go out into the general population, and you have your problem.

I'm not singling out Pits as bad dogs; they're not. I just think that certain breeds have aggressive characteristics and people don't know how to train and/or socialize, and so it causes problems. In all honesty, I have a Lhasa Apso (look like little prissy dogs) who is very, very aggressive (and they are known for being a bit unfriendly as a breed). When our Shih-tzu was a new puppy in our home, the lhasa almost bit her eye out. She attacked my niece, who was just a 3 year old trying to give her a hug, and made a gash in her nose. If we walk her outside, I have to be extra vigilant when there are other dogs around because she will attack. One time some idiot owner was walking his Pug without a leash outside, and it came over to our Lhasa to say hello, and my dog went immediately for her throat.

Whose fault is it? Mine, ultimately. I didn't socialize her enough when she was a puppy, with children and other dogs. Many Pit owners make the same mistake. And when you have a breed that is not as docile as a teacup Chihuahua (like Pits and yes, Lhasa Apsos), then you have more probability for a problem than if you have a Lab.

Glad your pup is doing better. I agree with the pit bull issue. Not the dogs fault their owners are idiots and have no business with the animal. :)

50 1.8 is a very cheap lens but one of the best Canon makes. Not L series :) $90-$110 range. My favorite lens as well. The Nifty Fifty they call it :D

Amazon.com: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens: Camera & Photo

I've got a Canon 30D for sale if anyone is interested in getting started in photography. Just a step below the 5D but a step above the Rebel series.

I have a 30D for myself but its pretty much sat for the past year since I got my new camera, a 5DmkII. The 30D is a very nice camera, 8mp, should make great 8x10s. Does pretty good at AF, though its now pro camera, a used 30D would be a great starter camera. If you need something smaller a powershot s95 or s100 or perhaps g12.

Ugh, I was a huge photo buff in high school. Love spending some time in the dark room. Haven't shot much lately. I have a humble Cannon G10. Can't toss out the coin for a solid dSLR but would love to some day. Love those shots by the way.

Yeah, I don't need all this photo chat right now. Its been hard to get out and shoot due to the weather (I shoot a lot of landscapes and sunsets) and the clouds often make the photos. Also work interfering along with the weather.

I got the 11-16mm lens. Its very wide. Quality lens and the ONLY non canon lens I got

Anyone with an iOS device - looking for some assistance. I am sure other people can chime in too since the Watering Hole is very active today. Developing UI for my Weight Watchers app on iOS (might make it a web app ported via Phonegap, but that's besides the point). I know the input boxes look correct for iPhone/iPad but wondering about the button placement, look and layout. Also the Points: 0 text looks a bit out of place on the gray background. Thoughts?

Yikes! Poor pooch. :( Hope she feels better soon!

Agreed - and you have people who should never be allowed to own a dog AT ALL who seek these breeds out specifically for their aggressive tendencies, and then they proliferate the problem. One of many reasons I wish you had to have a license to breed dogs.

I had a Lhasa when my son was younger who had a very similar temperament. Of course, the damage those little dogs can do is minor compared to the damage larger breeds can do. I have fostered a couple of golden retrievers who had a high prey drive, and they would "attack" my pugs or my cat. It was more of an instinctive thing than an aggressive thing, but either way, the outcome is the same. Those goldens had to be moved to other foster homes that didn't have small animals, and they did fine.

Okay folks, you asked for pictures and here they are! Capta and Ginny in action!

Here is the front of Capta:

And here's the back:

Capta2.jpg

Here's Ginny (my beloved Nexus) taking a pic of the TV using our tripod:

And Ginny mounted securely on the Capta:

How do you remove the smartphone? Just twist it and it comes right off. No sticky residue, no nothing.

And it angles my phone at any degree I want for my bedside clock / movie viewing - I don't need Samsung's $90 horizontal dock anymore! :D

Thanks, she's doing much better today. We're taking it a bit easy on her walking-wise (not too long at a time) and she's drinking and eating, so we're sure she'll be fine.

Not a good feeling, though, when you see blood coming out of your dog.

On another note,

I am nearing the end of Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn. I know a few on here recommended it a while ago and I finally got around to reading it. It's really good! I can't believe how much richer the story is than anything George Lucas came up with. It's too bad he's not going to do any more movies based on this trilogy. It would've been nice, but I guess it also would have been almost impossible to put any actors into the roles other than the ones we already know. No one else could play Han Solo, that's for sure.
