Help Android market do not work but unable to find google play !

Hello all,

I have an HTC Flyer (Android 2.3.3 / Sense 2.1) that i use only with wifi connection (with no SIM card inserted) and since today I'm unable to use the Android Market (Server error).
I heard about Google Play but this app is not installed and the update menu from the tablet settings tells me there is no available update for my phone.
I found some Google play .apk on the net but I have no reason to trust such not certified apps.
How can I get an official Google Play app or, better option, an official system update for this tablet (if any available, OTA or any other way) ?
Please note that I'm an Linux only user, I do not have any Windows systems around me, nor at home or work (yes, I'm a lucky guy :-D)

The problem was solved by inserting a SIM card and rebooting.
I can now connect to Android Market as usual but I still don't understand why a SIM card is now needed even though until this day I _never_ used one with my HTC Flyer.

Does anybody have some explanations ?

The only thing that comes to mind is that without the SIM perhaps the market can't identify the tablet and therefor doesn't know what apps it can show (it filters based on the device compatibility).

I have a WiFi only Flyer and the update to Play seemed to go smoothly for me. Often I login to the market on my PC and send apps to my devices instead of logging on directly, I just find it easier to browse that way so perhaps that did something different in my case.

I feel your concern, brother. I had the same issue. Somehow, I figured out that that whilst Google Play (formerly "Market") being the main engine for maintaining apps, it may be hard for the tablet to actually find updates for it. Hence, you'd have to get a system update that includes (the newer) Google Play. I am running stock firmware (Android Gingerbread v2.3.6), and since I'm having thoughts about S-OFF and suchlike, I'm not willing to push the official Honeycomb (Android v3.x) update, not just yet. However, I downloaded the (latest) official .APK installer, and installed it. I was first worried about specific compatibility with my HTC Flyer, since I found it hard to believe the Google Play is a generic piece of software. However, it seems just that way. I was told that system software would be replaced (Market), and it was. Now I'm running Google Play on my Flyer (with Gingerbread), works like a charm. I'm not sure if Google Play will manage to keep it self up to date. I will just have to wait and see.
