2.1 or 2.1 lite coming to hero?

I have been using the leaked Eris Rom that has been ported to the hero for the past couple of days and it is excellent, but it is not full 2.1. There has been rumour in the past that the Hero, Eris etc will get an edited 2.1 but this is the strongest evidence.

The main missing features are no live wallpapers and no Google earth support. This very likely to be the same for the final hero release.

Todays Engadget article discusses that the fragmentation of Android (1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.1) could be the death of the platform without even touching on the very possible fragmentation of just 2.1 depending on your hardware.

It will be a modified version of 2.1 with Sense UI. HTC may have to remove certain features in order for it to run smoothly on the hero. I think most of 2.1s features are going to be there, minus a few intensive ones.

Yeh, I'd rather not have live wallpapers for that exact reason. I'm not sure if it was 2.1 or the Nexus One that was supposed to have voice to text for every field? Will be interesting to see if it gets implemented or not.

Although tempted I think I'm just gonna wait for the official rom to come out, they all sound too buggy and battery-draining anyway. Mine at the moment on modaco with tweaks is really fast and the battery lasts ages, don't really wanna change until Paul brings out the next modaco built from the official rom :p

Very unlikely, in an AOSP 2.1 Rom if you select wallpapers there is a live wallpaper option. In this HTC have gone to the effort of removing it.
The Eris leak is not a finished build, far from it actually.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is just the 2.0 sense ported to 2.1 without any extra features (yet).
I am not saying I want Live Wallpapers, but the only reason we currently lack features is because it's an early build.

live wallpaper won't use too much battery power as you're not going to be on the home screen for that long. when you are on another screen it's going to be in active.

I agree with you!

The question is: is htc going to include them in their rom? They could decide to not use live wallpapers at all!
The reason? BOH!
Maybe the same reason why the applications list button is on the left and telephone in the center :)
Btw i hope live wallpapers will be in the future officiale 2.1, thery are as nice as useless (a lot :D)!
