So I'm 16, and ive had an enVtouch for awhile now and i was just told that i could get moved to my cousins plan(i live with aunt and uncle)..and now if i can do some convincing ill be able to get a droid, i can pay for the data plan(i know theres minutes and texting and stuff the parents are paying for that :D )
but do you guys think its still worth getting the droid, or should i wait for N1

The Droid is a great phone. There are three main issues with the Nexus One right now which might prompt a delay--if not that's even more reason not to get a Nexus One. It's really up to you, if you can wait then wait for the Nexus One. If you get the Droid, you probably won't have any regrets.

I know about all the issues and what not. But worries me is that I dont want the droid to get even more out dated. Im really loving the look of 2.1 and the 3D app menu and live wallpapers (and i know you can get those on the droid vvia root)
But android is really starting to get defragmented and that snapdragon procesor, oh wow is that thing a beast. pure beast. But yet again, so is the droid. I do alot of facebook, alot of texting, and ill start using email more often with the droid/whatever android phone.

Another thing to think about is that we don't even know the details of the N1 release on Verizon yet. It might not be available in stores. You may have to buy a new plan to get the subsidized cost, etc, etc.

Also, IMO, the biggest advantage the N1 has over the Droid is its RAM. Overclocking the Droid's processor easily matches/exceeds the Snapdragon, but we can never make up for having only half the RAM.

Yes thats the other thing that bugs me..but in other news the droid 2.1 will have live wallpapers!

This sure does help!

In that case you'll probably be waiting for ever and ever before ever picking up a phone. The truth is, there will always be a better phone out in the horizon.

If your coming from a env and used to the physical keyboard then the N1 might take some getting used to. Personally I can't use a virtual kb for all my typing so I need to have something with a physical one. The RAM is probably the biggest issue, processor is nice and all but you can OC the Droid to 1ghz if that's what you want. And the whole waiting game isn't fun either. Also we don't know how to root the CDMA/Verizon N1, it might be the same as the original OR it might be a bit more locked down which means having to wait longer for someone to find a exploit.

Personally I find the N1 to be a Droid minus the keyboard, the RAM is the only advantage it has over the Droid IMO. The Snapdragon just doesn't pull me in that much, especially to lose the kb.

I've owned both phones. I'm sure you'd be happy with either one of them. The biggest difference, and the one that you should probably care the most about, is the keyboard. I liked the Droid keyboard and it was a little sad to go to the N1 with virtual KB only. If you need a keyboard, get the Droid. If not, get the N1.

Yes, you can root and OC the Droid, but the N1 is 1GHz stock. My friend has a rooted Droid at 1.2GHz and it is faster than the stock OMAP clock for the Droid, but I don't feel like it is faster than the N1. I could tell that the Droid was slower, not horribly bad, but noticeable. Clock speed isn't everything, and I think that the CPU in the Droid isn't doing the work per clock cycle at those speeds that the N1 is.

We don't know if VZW will want more control over the N1 than T-Mobile has. That could be an interesting point. The openness of the N1 is one of the big selling points. If they're going to try locking down the N1, that could affect the speed of updates. Might just want to wait for one of the high end HTC phones coming to VZW with Sense UI.

Thanks for the input.. how much slower would you say it is? And im gonna stay stock for atleast the first year so by then it will most likely be rooted.

Of course it's up to you, but I was just curious as to why you would keep it stock for a year. I thought I would keep mine stock for a while too, but after a little over a month and seeing rooted features popping up everywhere, I couldn't help myself!

I can upgrade (using someone elses line for myself) when the N1 comes out, but I really don't fell the need, or have the desire to do so (pardon the pun! :p )

Haha! I love puns. But I just dont want to have to pay for a warranty, so if I root, i'd lose my 1 year warranty. But I have another question, if I do get the droid, how long do I have to return it?

OCed it's just a bit slower. Maybe 10-20% or so. Stock it's more noticeable. Some of this probably also has to do with the RAM. I feel like the N1 doesn't bog down as easily.

VZW usually gives you 30 days to bring it back. I think you have to pay a restocking fee though. The warranty is not really an issue if you root. Just don't bring a rooted phone into the store asking for help. If you need it exchanged, there are ways to unroot. If you just do the advanced exchange by mail (they send you a phone, then you return old one) they most likely won't check. But as I said, you can unroot.

30 days.

btw, the warranty is for the hardware. So if anything goes wrong hardware-wise, they should still honor the warranty.

Anyways, for Droid it is absolutely easy to return to factory stock. Just flash a SBF file. There's no way they could ever tell if it was rooted.

I'm sure there are similar files for the N1.

Oh, okay. Thanks! So, if the Nexus one comes in during that time and I play with it and like, it I should be able to trade in? Or maybe trade for the Pre? (its looking pretty sweet)?

Comparing the droid and N1 in speed is kinda hard. Most think its all about processor speed but its really not. I'm personally running 2.1 on my droid and it runs way better then 2.0 at stock speed. Its all about software optimization and 2.1 is a lot more optimized. I bet if you put a droid on 2.1 at 550mhz next to an N1 you wouldn't know the difference.

But if you really wanna buy into the gimick of snapdragon no one here can change your mind.

What gimmick? The Snapdragon is a fast processor, there's no gimmick. The Nexus One also has more RAM and a better screen (to look at), there are no "gimmicks" in that sense.

Still the Nexus One has some serious design/hardware issues which has to be addressed. If OP can't wait for the Nexus One and picks up a Droid, he won't regret it either way.

the gimmick they make it sound like 1ghz is making a difference when i really doesn't to the average user.

I agree, for what it's worth. My Droid is unrooted and I'm actually quite satisfied with the processing speed. It's not like having to wait a split-second longer is going to kill me for most things. I just don't think the speed difference between stock and rooted is enough to anguish over.

That said, if I understood how to root and where to get custom ROMs like some do on this board, I would probably do it. As for the other features, I think the Droid is the most complete *computer-like* phone money can buy. There are some things the slide-out keyboard can do far better than any virtual keyboard.
