Help 'Not enough memory. Delete some items.'

I have a Samsung Galaxy S. Whenever I try to access my photos on the android gallery it does not open and comes up with the message 'Not enough memory. Delete some items.' I do have enough memory and I can still access my photos through going into the camera app and going back through them all. The gallery used to open occasionally after I tapped on the app a few times but this has stopped. It's been going on for ages so I have turned it off and on lots of times/ taken out the battery etc. It may have possibly started when I bought an sd card. What do you think the problem is and what can I do about it? If I was to restore it to factory settings would this delete all my apps and photos etc? Thank you.

Try clearing the data on the gallery app: Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > All tab > Gallery > Clear data.

The factory restore will NOT delete your photos but WILL delete your apps.

I have just found that I have two separate DCIMs when I connect my phone to my laptop. I have one from before the problems which is in the main phone folder. Then I have another folder which appears beside the main phone folder which contains a new DCIM, Lost.dir, media and podcast. Do I need to merge the two somehow?

What Jerofld suggested won't delete the photos just the cache of the gallery app. Restoring to factory settings is always worth a try but it will delete your apps. It won't delete anything on the internal SD card, so those left over folders will remain there. You'll have to manually delete them yourself.

You will have a DCIM folder on the internal SD and one on the external SD (memory card). You could try moving all photos from the internal SD to the DCIM folder on the external SD or vice versa and see what happens.

I cleared all the data on the gallery app and now I can get back onto the app. It still blocks me sometimes but not all the time now I think I will try moving the photos around and see if that gets rid of the problem completely. But it is way better so thank you for all the help!

I am having similar trouble with the OP. Thanks Jerofld as your method has freed up some memory, but periodically I get the same message that I need to delete some apps. I basically do not understand how to do that as I use the few apps I have.

When I go into running services there are 3 Google Play services:
1) 1 process and 1 service 11MB

2) 2 processes and 4 services 14 MB

3) 2 processes and 3 services 19MB

Does anyone know if these are duplicates that I could remove?

Like Jerofld suggested to go into Apps> Manage Apps> All tabs> Gallery ( in this case). Can I do a similar procedure without losing an app completely?

Any advice would be appreciated but PLEASE keep it simple as I don't understand technology. Thanks in anticipation!
